  • omg i went to coney island with some friends 2 years ago, soooooo cool

  • Yep. He is from Kentucky and he drank Mountain Dew. Yep.

  • Schlitzie used to do little magic acts too..... though sadly, I don't think anyone's ever recorded those on film...

  • Well-known American sideshow performer and actor, best known as Schlitzie Surtees for his role in the movie Freaks, was possibly born under the name of Simon Metz in the New York’s community Bronx in 1901. According to other rather “mystical” sources, he was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Maybe that’s why many of the circus posters billed Schlitze under the title “The Last of the Aztecs”.

  • this is sad

  • e.e.e.euuw

  • Absolutely fucking terrifying.

  • There is no room for her brain!

  • Openminded, kind compassionate, you appear more disabled I'm afraid.

  • You fuckin idiot you're more of a freak than them!!!! They were innocent gentle people without prejudice unlike you. You're the seed of satan you fuck!!

  • Not funny at all!

  • She is a girl!

  • nno actually they always pretended it was a girl but he was actually a man look it up on wiki

  • he often wore dresses as he had a incontinace problem so dresses were easer to change than trowsers i read that on a Tod Brownings site as he was in the movie freaks

  • HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Is this fro the movie "Freaks" from about 1931 or something?

  • yeah it was at the wedding breakfast scean when Clo the trapeze girl had an out burst at the peformers they were chanting one of us and she flipped screaming abuse at them and Schlitzie sat laughing for a bit but he later left with the other peformer eather Zip or pip as clos out burst scared him kaing him and the other peformer like him cry so a able bodied older woman took them to safty

  • Whats so funny? It's an arab, hello?

  • omg i saw this when i was little!

  • shlitzie is silly

  • schlitze is so hot

    o m g

    beautiful

  • looks like a regular native american to me? whats the big deal?

  • wow that was a rather racist comment

  • i feel bad that they made these poor people act..unless they wanted to? :S

  • The condition they have is microcephalic, not common now due to advanced medicine/health,it still exists in 3rd world countries (india pakistan), and also an effect of chernobyl. Schlitze and others (jerry and elvira snow for example), led a pretty good life, they were exploited but they were stars and kept happy so they would perfom, they made good money, and supposedly liked the fame, many were retarded mentally, compared with most disabled peeps of the era (institusionlized) they did well

  • lynus111: I did not know that a microcephalic could live to be full grow.

  • I guess it depends on thier care, Schlitze perfomed until a rope old age, not always in freak shows but, street perfoming ect, he was a local celebrity by all accounts...good for him

  • lynus111: thanks for the info.

  • yeah he was quite a celebraty in his day he was one half of the act Zip and Pip for years too they toured with Corny Island freak show also it seemed he was a really sweet gentle guy with a child like inniconce bless him i hope hes peforming happly in heaven now with the other half of his act

  • Zip and Pip were Jenny and Elvira Snow I believe. Schlitze was a different person...However all 3 of them are in Todd brownings freaks (on YT), you are right about coney Island though, and them being chidlike.

  • yeah i remeber now they were twins but all 3 peformed together along with Fredia and Hanz and some of the other cast mebers at Cornry Island i think Tod Browning must have visited their but the twins and Schlitze were very gentle and loving even to hugging and kissing totle strangers

  • There is a beautiful resin kit of Schlitzie available...this must be something that can now be screened for...you just don't see microcephalics around anymore...

  • Nice try, but that was dubbed in and not really him.

  • That was excellent!

  • \rA

  • MEDO!

  • I love this part UAHSUHAUSHUAHSU

  • Way to go, Schlitze! Schlitze is soooooo cool. I've been a Schlitze fan for years, and I'm pleased to see others on YouTube can appreciate his talent. Incidentally, he was born in the Yucatan, probably around 1890. His date of death varies, but it's usually listed as 1971 (it has also been listed as earlier and later). In addition to Freaks, Schlitze also appeared in Meet Boston Blackie (1941), which comes on TCM from time to time. Go Schlitze! We love you!

  • That stuff about being born in Yucatan was most likely false. Other sources have him born near Santa Fe, NM. Rumor had it that he was actually born into a well-to-do family but they wanted nothing to do with him. They first put a dress on him because he wore a diaper and pants would have made it hard to change him, so someone decided to bill him as a female.

  • Thanks for the correction! That actually makes way more sense. Lots and lots of Schlitze websites say he was born in the Yucatan (including, I think, Wikipedia), but that leaves a whole lot of unanswered questions (like how did he end up in the United States?). So much information about the lives of the people in Freaks remains either a mystery or disputed.

  • He looked like a kind and gentle soul, like a precious young child.

  • He is a man. He wore dresses for sanitary reasons. And he played a woman in Freaks. But, in fact, Schlitzie was a man.

  • i always thought he was thought of a girl because of the dress like clown outfits he wore

atleast thats what i read idk

  • I would rather spend my life helping a soul like Schlitzie than some "beautiful person" that would never say thanks or show appreciation.

  • Tiddly Winks!

  • Schlitze was a guy. They dressed him up as a girl.

  • Let us put this to rest for good. Schlitzie was a man, yet was put in dresses for convenience due to his incontinence.

  • Schlitzie was a great person!

I don't think he is matter of fear, his heart will forever be remembered.

  • No, he was a man, Simon Metz, he was dressed as a Girl, just that... and why I have thumbs down? Because I've searched information about someone I kindly admire? I have no more words to say.

  • Right you are ebmfritz.

  • He is a man.

He was incontinent so he wore dresses.

No one ever knew who his parents were so he was put in the care of his various employers over the years.

Suffering from autism among other mental and physical disabilities, he was said to have the mental age of a 4 year old.

  • WTF IS DAT IT SCARES ME!

  • The laughter in this video is not Schlitze's. That being said, he WAS a guy, and I've heard nothing but good things about him.

  • That's not a man. That's a woman from the movie "Freaks".

  • That's not a man. That's a woman from the movie "Freaks". They called them the bird women.

  • there's actually much debate whether or not Schlitzie was a man

  • schlitzie WAS a man, he wore the dresses because it was easier to tend to his tolieting needs, he was very slow, but very alert, in this day andd age he would have been accepted and given education, i actually know that some microcephalies are ''normal intelect' but either way he was a cool guy and while yes disabled he was very alert and bright the brain is small, but ability varies just as it does in ''normal folks'

  • Well to be honest there wasn't a debate at all, if you look on all internet profiles of Schlitzie, they all say he is a man.

    RIP Schlitzie

  • The so-called "Bird Women" of Freaks were Minnie Woolsey and Elizabeth Greene. There is absolutely no debate over whether Schlitzie was a man. Schlitzie was a man. His death certificate identifies him as a male. Everybody who worked with him knew he was a man. He played a woman in Freaks, just like Jaye Davidson played a woman in The Crying Game and Linda Hunt played a man in The Year of Living Dangerously.
