Charlie Kaufman is a genius and the most original screenwriter working in Hollywood today. The movie in the end hardly had anything to do with the book. I mean, it was about so much more than orchids. It was a great character study; it was the deconstruction of a formulaic screeplay; and a fascinating look into the creative process of a writer where the movie seemed to be developing as we were watching it. And of course that third act was briliant.
I don't think this movie is really about the book at all.
Kaufman was originally told to adapt the book. However, he couldn't figure out how, which coincided with his hate for formulaic Hollywood bullshit. Therefore, the fact that it was about the "Orchid Thief" was really almost a coincidence.
I believe the film is more of a satire on screenwriting. It's not about orchids. In fact, the entire 3rd act is part of the movie within a movie. It's Donald's creation.
Isn't this the one where he talks about giving himself permission to remain in love with someone he knows doesn't even like him and never will? That concept really stuck in my head.
the last third, with the deus ex machina IN THE FORM of a description of deus ex machina, and the crazy action-movie finale, one of my favourite endings to a movie ever
love the connections between film and fiction. thanks for hitting on the connection here. i need to see this again. didn't get it the first time and kinda wrote it off. but you've chatted up the book and the film, and i'm interested in the both. personally, i hope you do more of these film and fiction bits. great review.
Awesome awesome awesome movie. I can't tell if Kaufman see this character as intensely personal or a caricature of who he believes himself to be. Absolutely fantastic film, thanks for the review :)
