Literally, the only interesting part of the ENTIRE movie, is when the killing starts, you know...the ONLY ACTION that appears? (besides them kissing in the shower) I loathe how Gus Van Sant always makes his movies awkward and they're always so fricking boring because he always makes his actors talk for a long ass time before the action starts. And for some reason, he's always got them walking down some hallway for like 10 whole minutes, doing nothing but walking! ps the one in the black is cute
I went into this movie with great expectations but it was horribly disappointing. Half of it is just a camera following people walking down the hallway. All this suspense is built up to a very boring ending. The movie itself is just soooo slow and boring. The acting is ridiculously bad and I know that they were trying to make it seem like they were just high school students, but that's not how high school students talk to each other. Don't waste your time on this at all.
@sayminame123 This movie is full of artsy bullshit that's trying to be deep but ends up sending no message. It's just a span of a few hours shown from different perspectives, but I could feel no connection to the characters at all. What were there motives?
@sayminame123 Trust me I wanted to like this movie. It just could have been so much better if it had built the suspense up way more, Actually had an ending that was significant, and wasn't so repetitive. I admire the concept of telling it from different angles, but Citizen Kane did it way better. I just wish it had more of a purpose, more connection to the characters. When people were killed I didn't find it sad, because I didn't know them, they were just strangers.
@bounty93 Before you slam the acting in this movie, you should realize that none of the students in this movie were actors and all of the dialogue was improvised.. Furthermore, the purpose of this movie isn't to understand motives or to answer questions as to why they did what they did, but to have us experience this event. It doesn't win the Palme d'Or for being a bad movie. The concept is just going over your head. Once you're out of high school this movie will mean a lot more to you.
@semu64 I knew the Acting was improvised and they weren't professionals, but that doesn't excuse it. Bad acting is bad acting. It didn't feel real at all.
@Jurassic0Al I never said that you can't understand it while you're in high school. However, it is my experience after watching this in both high school and after high school, I was able to get a lot more out of it while graduated.
@huyang110yahoo I understand it. He wants it to feel real, like we're there in the school. But when the acting is so unconvincing it just takes that whole effect away.
@DaNnY92506 He created the red lake massacre he watched this movie before the massacre and at te end of the mascre he killed himself he also made 2 violent animations on newgrounds ( A website were you express your self with animations or art also music witch I visit)
@kukar100 its really good. the cinematography is really interesting and the way its writen so straightforward almost like it isnt a movie at all but youre just experiencing the whole thing with the characters makes it very different from alot of other movies. I love it.
@kukar100 I've just seen it, it is really good. Its hard to explain in what way, just how its filmed, the dialogue... just give it a watch, its worth the time
Reading the comments here makes me understand why things like this happen. It's a hell of a way to go out though, may just be fun... you know... if you're planning to end it all. Although I for one wouldn't be just shooting all those assholes, I'd also be stripping some bitches haha. Too bad he was gay. Also, wth was up with the black guy, what an idiot. The main shooter is pretty dumb though, he just sits there in the class taking it up the butt... pun was not intended lol.
This was one of the most offensive piles of dog shit I've ever seen. It's obviously inspired by Columbine, yet he called it a piece of fiction as to avoid dealing with anything meaningful. This film is so cliche-ridden, I'm surprised there wasn't a scene of the two young killers listening to Marilyn Manson. There is no insight to be gained by watching this film.
it is a bit dull. theres a 5 minute long scene of a guy walking down the hall. there are some verry dull scenes. but please do watch this movie. at the end youll be amazed by this film. i watched it when i was in 5th grade and it kept my attention. so it should keep yours.
@condiersea I saw this movie for the first time several years ago and at first I hated it. I hated the 5 minute long scenes of seemingly nothing going on. But then I watched it several years later and found that there was actually quite a bit going on during those seemingly dull scenes. This is just a movie you really have to...I guess you could say explore to appreciate.
@condiersea Did you fail a few grades or something? Those scenes can easily be seen as dull, but to me it felt as if it belongs there. This isn't an action film.
@m4rx05 no shit it isnt an action film. your not any more intelligent for enjoying a scene of a guy walking down a hall. your not better you come off a bit condescending. you come off as one of those people who are so special and different because they appreciate things that aren't the norm. all im saying is the scene was drug out too long. your disgusting for wanting to strip bitches btw.
This movie was so dull and just poorly done. Tried too hard to be artistic. Even during the shooting, the characters were so damn apathetic and borderline stupid; I couldn't tell if it was just the way it was written or the piss poor acting.
I've red that the title refers to an old legend from India, which says about a couple of old, blind men and an animal...They were all touching the elephant but each of them could "see" something different: a tree (elephant's leg), a snake (his loooong nose), etc...
man this movie was haunting. If your one of the guys that thought it was boring, wel the whole point of the first half was to get you to know the school and to get to know some of the kids at the school so that once the shooting comes, you actually feel something because you've connected with the students. And also, thrughout the whole film, you know what's gonna happen, so like the other commenter said, you get more and more uncomfortable as the film gets closer to the rampage scene. So Scary
this movie was pretty good. i liked the vibe, but the "actors" playing the shooters could have been better. the ending was pretty dumb. but an unforgettable movie nonetheless.
If you want Columbine watch Bowling For Columbine by Michael Moore which is another excellent movie. They only slightly reference the Columbine shootings very lightly, for example the part where they both tell the guy to go home and not come back actually happened at Columbine.
@nicky1779 i think the movie is also called elephant, cause there is another movie called elephant, produced by danny boyle...from the seventies i guess...also same "plot". a person that randomly shoots people in the street
there is an underlying tension throughout the movie that you feel and it gets more and more uncomfortable because you know what it going to inevitably happen in the end...it mirrors that same uncomfortable feeling when there is "an elephant in the room"
the metaphor "elephant in the room" means that there is an enexcusible problem, that everyone is aware of, yet everyone tries to ignore it.
the film deals with that metaphor, mainly speking out on the columbine massacre, yet it is not directly based on the event.
it reafers to the metaphor of "2 blind men touching and elephant. this means that people see event in different points of view. he film focuses on different views on the shotting that occurs.
this is a very good movie-i must have watched it about ten times just to understand all the kids point of view-and i can spmpathise with the kids being picked on-but they took the easy way out
but being picked on like that was just the final straw

@Zakariia On IMDB the trivia says " Gus Van Sant borrowed the title from Alan Clarke's film of the same name, and thought that it referred to the Chinese proverb about five blind men who were each led to a different part of an elephant. Each man thinks that it is a different thing. What Clarke's title actually referred to was the idea of the "elephant in the room." It's an idiom for an obvious truth that gets ignored, like an elephant in a room that no one will acknowledge is there."
It's an artsy film about the shooting in Columbine only not precise. It shows different points of views of the victims, friends, as well as the killers. Great movie!
It's supposed to play off the expression "Elephant in the room", meaning the subject which is iminent but people choose not to talk about or pretend doesn't exist.
@joewoolliams i also heard that it's name is taken from the saying or idea(?) that several blind people would describe an elephant in completely different ways after touching it.
none of them is actually Harris or Klebold. they were COMPLETELY different from the shooters in the film (physically and behaviorally). but, all in all it's one of the best films to ever exists, if not the best.

dude Im a student producer over at NYFA and Im remaking another version of the shooting with actual FACTS. Poor Eric Harris and Dylan Khebold are turning in their graves due to how the movie was made! Not that I root for them, but I have to give them credit and say they were wasted minds...By the way people Eric Harris was the leader not Dylan! That was insulting to watch!
This wasn't about Columbine specfically, it was influenced by it. If you want to make a factual movie, go for it, but that was hardly what Elephant was attempting to achieve.
@Jess046 how can you say that? do you not know any of the details about Columbine? There are SEVERAL things that are directly linked to Columbine. Elephant was based off of Columbine, specifically. Obviously everything is not going to be the same. But that is exactly what the movie was attempting to achieve.
I know that Elephant was based on Columbine. But do you really think Gus Van Sant decided to do Elephant to show exactly what happened at the school? Of course not. It's more of a comment on society rather than a direct comment on the events of Columbine.
van sant has explained it in a few different ways...
most of the time he says it comes from the phrase "elephant in the room." meaning the problem that's so obvious that everyone assumes it will be fixed by someone else, until it's too late.
Yes, refer to spain, but it's not spanish fashion. It's like an icon of spanish outdated people, outdated mint people, it's like an antonym of modern thought. Bullfighters are idiots and this icon is a bullshit. I'm from Barcelona, this icon for me it's a shame...

looks boring...
BannedIP 2 years ago
It's supposed to play off the expression "Elephant in the room", meaning the subject which is iminent but people choose not to talk about or pretend doesn't exist.
joewoolliams 2 years ago 29
Ahh,I was wondering why the name was Elephant.
AmyNightingale1 2 years ago 3
@joewoolliams i also heard that it's name is taken from the saying or idea(?) that several blind people would describe an elephant in completely different ways after touching it.
getz21 1 year ago
@joewoolliams do people seriously no know that?

good movie (:

none of them is actually Harris or Klebold. they were COMPLETELY different from the shooters in the film (physically and behaviorally). but, all in all it's one of the best films to ever exists, if not the best.

dude Im a student producer over at NYFA and Im remaking another version of the shooting with actual FACTS. Poor Eric Harris and Dylan Khebold are turning in their graves due to how the movie was made! Not that I root for them, but I have to give them credit and say they were wasted minds...By the way people Eric Harris was the leader not Dylan! That was insulting to watch!
veronicapinxy 2 years ago
This wasn't about Columbine specfically, it was influenced by it. If you want to make a factual movie, go for it, but that was hardly what Elephant was attempting to achieve.
Jess046 2 years ago 15
@Jess046 how can you say that? do you not know any of the details about Columbine? There are SEVERAL things that are directly linked to Columbine. Elephant was based off of Columbine, specifically. Obviously everything is not going to be the same. But that is exactly what the movie was attempting to achieve.
angie12o3 1 year ago
@angie12o3
I know that Elephant was based on Columbine. But do you really think Gus Van Sant decided to do Elephant to show exactly what happened at the school? Of course not. It's more of a comment on society rather than a direct comment on the events of Columbine.

I would've liked it more if the movie had a ending with a resolution.
SteelEye009 3 years ago
like what the shooters surrender, get counciling and go summer in Hawaii ?
no1joey 3 years ago 3
No, not that kind of resolution. That's just stupid.

What's the significance of the movie's title? Anyone know?
awarh 3 years ago
actually, Gus Vant Sant named the movie "Elephant" after a british movie about a shcool shotting of the same name
Griffoza 3 years ago
i think it gets the killers think there bigger and much tougher like an elephant
SCARAFCE16 3 years ago
van sant has explained it in a few different ways...
most of the time he says it comes from the phrase "elephant in the room." meaning the problem that's so obvious that everyone assumes it will be fixed by someone else, until it's too late.

aglioeolio84 3 years ago
what's the whole point of the t shirt then?
Hadrian1987 3 years ago
Yes, refer to spain, but it's not spanish fashion. It's like an icon of spanish outdated people, outdated mint people, it's like an antonym of modern thought. Bullfighters are idiots and this icon is a bullshit. I'm from Barcelona, this icon for me it's a shame...
