In this video they were chanting the Universal Door chapter of the Lotus Sutra first, then the Heart Sutra, followed by continuous chanting of the mantra of Fudo Myoo.
A teacher in Japan told me that the attitued one should take while attending a Goma is to think about purification, while the fire is going the participants will usuall recite a mantra, and maybe a sutra afterwards. I was told by this teacher that the participants may begin to learn the meaning of the mantra while chanting it many times, and that the fire can also be used teach the participants.
@Firewarrior67 Actually, this is a prayer (homa in Japanese) ritual in honor of Achala, the destroyer of delusions. like @LightSing said, it is also a purification ceremony .
Taiwanese Buddhists !! Let's not keep on extending the myth that Taiwan is part of China !
Taiwan was once a colony of Japan (70 years ago) and Japanese culture made a deep impact on Taiwanese culture. When the KMT arrived from China they tried to destroy all things Japanese, but luckily they did not succeed.
Shingon was introduced to Japan in the 7th century by the chinese monk named Kukai. Chinese Chen-Yen = Shingon. I didn't know the some Taiwanese sects did the "Fudo Myoo Mantra", which is what is being done in this video. You see Fudo in the beginning holding a sword.
I thought Kukai was Japanese. He went to Tang in order to bring back the teachings. Also, I will have to assume that these sects are actually Japanese Shingon groups that were established when Taiwan was a Japanese colony. From the video, I would think that they only use the texts and rituals from Shingon, otherwise they are very Chinese-style Buddhist.
WAT IS THIS FOR
