Most of Christianity is not televangelists. A lot of televangelists got started with money from non-Christian business interests. Of course it is a scam! It is also not Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Anglicanism, Lutheranism, etc.
I am sure you will find the CEOs of the largest corporations are mostly atheist or secular/lapsed Christians and (especially) Jews. Atheists like Hitchens support war and are generally okay with neoliberalism. Serious Christians are not! Who likes profit?!
Dan Summers of Lynchburg, VA owns Quality Archery Design. I am a machine shop owner and tool maker. I built some prototype tooling for Dan. He wrote me a $10,000 bad check and he also shop lifted close to $4,000 worth of tools and jigs then laughed in my face. The judicial system would do nothing to him becouse he was a Jerry Farwell worshiper. He was above the law. Actually I was the only one charged in the incident. He charged me with phone harassment for calling him about my stolen property.
Only a complete ignorant person would say atheism is ruining America. Religious (christian) fundamentalists are ruining America. READ Hitchens book 'god is not Great'. oh, wait..xtians don't read.
So many people have the common perception that America was built on Christianity, that religion is a part of their culture, when in reality it couldn't have been further from it. Many of its founding fathers were atheists and agnostics. As well as a majority of the most famous presidents. The constitution states that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. And the words "One nation under God" were only added into it 50 years ago, unconstitutionally! Now thats ironic
they werent necessarily atheist, rather secular. Even Ben Franklin deemed religion a necessary component in keeping men virtuous. So while a bunch of bible thumpers is the wrong idea to have about our founding fathers, so is that fact that they were atheist, because they weren't. They were just religious with common sense.
What you say mostly makes sense. The late 18th century, in both England and America, was not particularly full of religious zeal. The Founding Fathers - deists, Unitarians, Quakers, and mostly protestant Anglicans, had normal religious views for people of their education/social class. Atheism would have been a real scandal. It was in the mid-19th century that there was a great religious awakening again - for evangelicals, Catholics, Anglo-Catholics (in England), etc.
His book is stupid. Hitchens is an ignorant, arrogant, aggressive, pathetic man who is dying a lonely death. The English have a splendid spiritual tradition based on the contributions of men far more educated and rational than Hitchens.
This video is a response to the video "Christopher Hitchens: British Atheism Ruining America." That's what I was referring to, and there's enough in the first minute to work with, even before the guy starts talking.
As for this video, well, it may apply to TV preachers and street preachers and the like, but not to congregations who simply raise $ to support themselves and what they deem valuable. I spend my $ on myself and on what I deem valuable, too.

This says nothing much. Why not provide a rational response to an irrational claim?

Sorry.
What claim was that?

I wrote hundreds of words in reply to "British Atheism Ruining America". None of them came anywhere near this uncannily well-judged response. Great.
