Hi everyone :) i am at university studying graphic design and i have chosen to do a brief on the wizard of oz. I am going to be producing typographical posters to bring back this classic film and give it life once again so that people want to watch the film. It would be a great help to get some feedback on what people remember about this classic film or any other thoughts would be much appreciated :) thanks Hayley. If you could PM me that would be even better.
I LOVE MICHAEL JACKSON AND I AM GETING THE MOVE TOMAROW I AM EXCITED TO SEE IT FOR THE FRIST TIME THE MUSIC FROM WHAT I HERD AND SEE BITS LOOK INCREDDIBEL.
30 years, wow! This was the first live play I ever seen. It was in NYC and my aunt Phyllis took me. It was a great show and day 4me. "Happy Anniversary!" Indeed
@Moonwalker4Evr It was great. Too bad it came out at the wrong time. Sorry, I love Diana Ross, but felt she was miscast - should have been Stephanie Mills or an unknown.
@forestkaat Michael said himself in his autobiography that Stephanie Mills was a great Dorothy. He said every single one of her performances is believable. Diana Ross was a good Dorothy too, but like you said, she was probably miscast. They probably gave her the part because this was a Motown movie and Diana Ross was part of the label.
I love both the Wiz and the Wizard of Oz. I don't look at them as the black and the white versions. One is the old and one is the new. Each has earned the accolades they received. They're both great.
I personally think(while being an obssessive fan of the Wiz,the Wizard of Oz(1939)&WICKED) that the Wiz is the best adaptation of the original story of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.Yes,this Musical/Movie has urban visuals, themes&locations. However the plot, characters,&order of events are truer to the orginal story than most other musical/movie adaptations. While I think all the different adaptations are uniquely great, the Wiz follows the book more accurately with a fresh urban twist&great music.
@ASHtheMUSICALgirl13 The most faithful rendition of Baum's original Oz book is a little Canadian show called "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Interestingly, though, it keeps Toto in Kansas (like the stage version of "The Wiz") and Dorothy's farewell to her friends uses adapted dialogue from the movie version of "The Wiz."
@black6977 I didn't mean to just point out Diana and Michael. Everyone in this movie was brilliant. Mabel, Richard, Nipsy, Ted, Lena, Theresa, Richard and Stanley were all swell. I don't think anyone would want to take on such an elaborate film. It is a shame that this movie was flop back in its time. There is obviously alot of people on here that can appreciate the movie for what it was.
Will someone please redo this movie please!!!! ive been to plays to see it, but its needs to be re-did in theaters to pay tribute to the legends, Lena Horne, Richard Pryor, Ted Ross, Nipsey Russell, and the greatest ever Michael Jackson. Please remake this movie.....
@ganier14 If this were to be redone, it needs to be redone right. In this day in age, a update version of this movie would be stereotyping and mockery being that this is a black movie.
The 1970's was such a great time for blacks to take their place in American society after establishing civil rights in the 1960's. Maybe if The Wiz had come out at a different time it would have reached a wider audience like the film The Color Purple did when it premiered. Diana Ross is a living legend and never seems to get the recognition that she has earned after so many decades in show business. Thank you thewizboy for posting this video!
music is fantastic, the sets huge...but why all of that trash and abandoned building and prostitutes in OZ its suppose to be pretty and that homeless man coming out of the basement of that torn down building...
@slimmy38 - It is an artistic interpretation of the The Wizard of Oz that is set in an inner city urban ghetto. Trash, abandoned building and prostitutes are what people face on a daily basis.
The theme is the same leaving the safety of home, stumbling into and out of trouble, making friends and enemies and finally realizing you found out what you were made of along the way.
@thewritepassion Also surrounding oneself with negative people, negative thinkers, etc. Those always putting you down because there life is going nowhere, and they're always telling you, '' you can't win'' etc this was the point of the wiz, surround yourself with positive people. Don't let others tell you what you can't achieve, during this time the emphasis was on African Americans, as the 70's was a time we were pushing forward, cont,
@thewritepassion cont, and the time was over for us to be told what box we would fit in etc! This was the ouroise if the Wiz for empowerment, etc, i could go on, but i'm sure you all get the drift.
@thewritepassion . No no no it was NOT taken place in the ghetto. dorthy is from Halem New York. Then as Oz, its a fantasy way of NYC. do your research. get it right.
@erinmary97 - You might want to do your research. When she got lost /left home -she was in an inner city urban ghetto with the graffiti munchkins, trash, abandoned building and prostitutes. When she got to OZ it was a fantasy of New York.
@slimmy38 - It is an artistic interpretation of the The Wizard of Oz that is set in an inner city urban ghetto. Trash, abandoned building and prostitutes are what people face on a daily basis.

I just caught it on TVone. Love this movie since seeing it when I was a little kid. Barry Gordon was a genius with the symbolism he placed all over the screenplay.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE "The Wiz"!! I have adored this movie since I was five, six years old! It's airing tomorrow on the TV One channel as part of the all-day Michael Jackson Thanksgiving event!
@thewizfan78 They're not "worshiping" anything! They are celebrating their freedom from her tyranny, same as the Munchkins celebrated being freed from Evvamean.
Ya, see there is no comparing those two movies. Why try and compare the white and black OZ's? It only diminishes the both of them some how and they are fantastic in their own right. Ahem... but my favorite is The Wiz.
@rebabean "The Wiz" and "fantastic" are two words that should never be used in the same sentence together. It's not a black/white thing; most of the faces behind the camera on "the Wiz" were the same color as those on "The Wizard of Oz".
Me and my friends thought this film was so good we watched it twice! no really though, we did watch it twice and it's so terrible it nearly actually killed us.
The film was an adaption of the all black stage production. The reason Diana played an older Dorothy was because it was supposed to be that way. The film is an amazing classic and will surely survive the trials of time.
This is the best music ever! Its like the best tunes of Motown. I played guitar for this play at Chicago State University and it was such a great vibe cuz the songs and music are AWESOME. Best musical ever!!!!
SOMEBODY ANY BODY WHAT WAS THE VERY FIRST SONG IN THE WIZ WITH THE WHOLE FAMILY? I LOVE THAT SONG. WISH TIMES WERE STILL THAT SIMPLE. EVERYBODY HAD AND KNEW THEIR PART
@kekekeyonna The song is "The Feeling We Once Had", which is sung by Aunt Em. There is a clip from the movie - just search for The Wiz - Aunt Em. Several clips from other productions (including one with Stephanie Mills) are also on You Tube.
I've always thought the Wiz was severely underrated. I don't see how it could've flopped the way it did. Considering when it came out, I would've thought it'd take the world by storm.
i cant believe this film got bad reviews....i think its amazing and i think MJ was amazing as the scarecrow. diana ross was a perfect choice and i dont think it really matters if shes too old to play the part. amazing...i love it! x
The music was terrific, which is why the sound track did do well, but the movie flopped b/c it was awkwardly performed & staged. It was too scary for children, too kitchy for adults, with some extravagant stage designs that got lost in their concept and didn't translate to the screen. Diana Ross was too old to play Dorothy, but I really think that they could have gotten away w/ that had the sets and staging not been so bad. Michael Jackson & Lena Horne were amazing.
The film was a flop bc people still had hard feeling against Diana Ross and Flo's death. Many believed she was too old to play Dorothy. They changed it that Dorothy was a teacher. It didn't work unfortunately.
The Wiz is better than the original reviews but it is by no means a great movie. Diana Ross is too old to play Dorothy, Michael Jackson is too childlike, and the special effects are a little cheesy. Sidney Lumet was also not the ideal director to do a musical. Still, Nipsy Russell, Ted Ross and Mabel King are terrific. Ease on Down the Road works perfectly, and I love Ross' performance of Home. The reality is that what worked well on the Broadway stage didn't translate that well to the screen.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm african american and I didn't like the movie either. I've actually never even seen it all the way through. I also didn't like Michael's part as the scarecrow. The ghetto, rundown streets. Too depressing for me. Maybe one day I'll watch it. I might be surprised to find that it wasn't as bad as I thought. I figure if a movie is a hit and a classic why do a remake it? That would be like Thriller being done over again and we all know how stupid that would be.
I was surprised when I heard this movie got bad reviews. I can't say it was b/c of race. My mom didn't like this movie that much because of the trash like scenery and she's black. It's understandable after the glam of the wizard of Oz. Some people may prefer a prettier aesthetic and want to be in a dreamland rather than being reminded of reality. I loved it though. Thanks for the song. :)
The cinematography was lacking at some times. And yeah, the setting was made to be grimy and dark, even though Oz is supposed to be a wonderland. "Reality" doesn't have to mean trash and vandalism, but I suppose that's what some people want to associate with. XD
In Wizard of Oz, any of Oz's problems come from evil. In this Oz, they just come from neglect, no self-confidence and no pride in your own neighborhood. lol
The Wiz is an amazing movie because of the numerous references pertinent to the Black community that were interspersed throughout (peer pressure detering youth from educating themselves, the numbers lady, graffiti as art, can't catch a cab, dressing to "nines" to strut your stuff, etc).
A great song. I love it when they used this song on Family Guy, when the cops left town. All thw black people who were disguised as white people took them off and danced to this song. Also look at the Tin Woodsman at min 2:01, his forearm is made of a Budweiser can. The actors' name is Nipsy Russell. maybe they should call him Tipsy Russell if he was sucking brews down. LOL
watch the 2010 121st Tournament of Roses Parade and hear the Pickerington Central Marching Tigers play this song down colorado boulevard along with Kansas' Carry On My Wayward Son.
How could it get bad reviews? It has awesome music, awesome dancing and a creative location! I thought this movies was awesome and colorful. It's waaaay better than the Wizard of Oz.

In this Oz, they just come from neglect, no self-confidence and no pride in your own neighborhood. lol

@ProserpinaFC I would say that Evillene was evil. The name's a bit of a giveaway, you know. ;-)

LOL
