Thank you so much. I have been trying to teach my teach my toddler the colors and she wasn't catching on, now she remembers this song. Every child learns in different ways. Pink and purple are more commonly used and are more simple. As she advance in her learning I will incorporate more. Just like now she can identify the numbers 1-10 so now I will introduce 11-20. For all the angry pedants: the "real" colours of the rainbow were picked by Isaac Newton for his spiritual reasons. He basically invented indigo to make up the numbers.

Nowadays we dont use the term violet or indigo, we stay with the basics

We think that Indigo looks like purple and violet looks like pink, and for 0 - 6 year olds purple and pink are more useful and easier to learn.

We don't think that it is misleading. Children have been learning colors and enjoying Arthur Hamilton's famous song, "I can sing a rainbow" for over 60 years despite the fact that it doesn't include indigo and violet. It doesn't seem to have done too much damage to a generation of physicists.

@KidsTV123 I agree with this. It does no harm to a two-year old to teach them these most common colours while omitting the fact that the light spectrum spans infra-red to ultra-violet. Pretty sure kids will work that out when it really matters. At this age and level, teaching common colours is far more important and a lot more relevant. :)

I'm with the real rainbow people - if we're talking pink and purple then we're not talking about a rainbow. I don't like saying to the kids: "well, I know you thought it was pink and purple and felt really smart but it's actually indigo and violet". as an art teacher, i find it cumbersome to explain indigo and violet to children. When you build on the color knowledge skill to start MIXING colors, it makes no logical sense. And besides, who really uses Indigo and Violet concepts anyway? They are BOTH shades of purple, just one has a tinge of red in it. look at the color wheel, it includes SIX colors, not 7. Whats the point of Roy G. Biv? To perpetuate a vision of a little leprechaun owning the rainbow?
