And now Riverside King is doin it with Stars & Stripes taking sweepstakes at a few band reviews over Arcadia, Rancho Bernardo and not sounding as good as these guys
AHS class of '83. I've never seen any footage of the band from my yrs as a tall flag/Princess. I am blown away by this. If this truely is the '82 All Western Band Review I really can't believe I was a part of that. I am just blown away at how AMAZING the band as a whole looks & sounds. WOW!!! It all came together cuz we were a team, worked our you-know-whats off to make it happen.1st place wasn't good enough and we knew what we were doing this for. We had fun and worked hard. Good times!
It would certainly be hard - in fact, impossible - to say that Arcadia hasn't produced technically-great marching bands over the years. Arcadia practically OWNED the Long Beach All-Western Review in its day, and to this day, Arcadia produces great marching bands. Along with Glendora (where my sister and I went to school) and Pasadena (where my mother attended in her day) and Azusa in the early 60's under Ross Davis, I can't think of many more important bands.
Fun to see, and to realize that the "marching graph paper" moniker still applies. That description is at least as old as 1975. - french horn, class of '77
AHS class of '01 and still playing. I remember Mr. Landes used to show us this video as inspiration the week of Chino. He always played it twice. The first time without sound so we could watch the feet, ranks, and diaganols. And the second with the music. It just blew my mind every time I watched it and we always brought our A game even after our 11 year sweeps streak got snapped by Mt. Carmel(booo). I am so proud to have been a part of this great band. They're still keeping our tradition alive.
I remember we had to play the march twice because it was too short, and didn't get us out of the competition area before it was over. It would be great to see a video of 1981. I believe they played Rifle Regiment, or even 1982 to hear the modified Stars and Stripes arrangement.
Wow seeing some of the responses to this video is like woah. A 197 out of 200 makes me feel really small
I am a member of the Thunderbird Marching Regiment in Yucaipa CA.i feel small cuz we're only a 2A band. What's cool about this video is the drum major is my friends dad.=] msg me and tell me ur scores =]
Current theories suggest the involvement of mobs, a Vegas bet, a thanksgiving dinner gone bad, Diane who works at Target and the development of the MTV series, The Hills. In other words...its a mystery.

Pretty simple..Phasing? Out of Step Aux team through entire march? Wrong notes by the clarinet section? Now do you remember? Oh- Yes trumpet 1 played wrong partial on trio... any other questions?
Thanks for posting this, baribigbird! This is a real nostalgia trip--the late great Long Beach band review. Not to mention the "marching graph paper" and huge sound of the Arcadia Apache Marching Band.
holy crap... now i see why my section leader tells me to watch this..cuz its freakin good...o yea we almost got a perfect score at mt carmel last week. we got a 197 out of 200. its like almost 1982 all over again but 2008 style hehehe :)

Sound is really unrefined and out of tune. Its why they didnt win music that year. They always marched well. Its everything else. Magnolia went undefeated that year on the street and had to use everyone in their band. This band used less than half and upperclassmen and still lost to a band from C class. That is what makes what they did amazing. They took 150 on the field and and competed with 300. Dont take away from the hard work that band did.
I think everyone is just stating the obvious....from this incredible...sending chills down your spine performance and Magnolia's vid of the same day people are STUNNED that Arcadia lost. Magnolia held their own, but Arcadia is a legend...and that's real talk.
On Apr 3,2008, we had the Arcadia HS Spring Concert at AHS' North Gym, and I met a woman who was played a flute in the 1982 AHS band. Her daughter is a freshman in the AHS Apache band, under that same teacher Tom Landes.
I am sorry, but I don't know the woman's name because I didn't think to ask her, but if I run into again, I sure will. I was walking out of the concert when I noticed her twin boys, and made a comment how cute they were(they were both asleep with their dad), and asked here what she thought about the concert. And she mentioned that she played the flute in the AHS band in 1982, and that her daughter is a freshman and is also playing the flute in the band. She is a caucasian. I am asian.
WOW! Great video from above! You don't happen to have a copy of the band that beat Arcadia that day? I've always thought that it was strange that Magnolia, a kazoo band from Anaheim, competing out of class of all things, could possible matched the Esprit de Corp of Arcadia! It would be great to put that mystery to rest once and for all.
i was there that day. not marching in this band, but in another. if you were a spectator, Arcadia was thrilling. if you were a competitor, they were terrifying. this video shows why more than words can describe.

They sounded goos like that because they were the biggest band in SoCal in those days (besides Antelope Valley). In those days, Montebello was the best band pound for pound and you know it. All of you.. Arcadia, Antelpoe Valley, Orange Glen, etc were all way bigger than us and we hung in their with you every week.
I was a member of the Arcadia Marching Band from 1965 to 1968 when Ron Hoar (Uncle Ronny) was director. We knew we had stiff competition from Montebello, Pasadena and others and we never took you for granted. We knew how hard we would have to work, and we knew we'd have to be at our best on the day of competition.
@adoerfler I don't know if it registers it was ME that thumbed down your comment...but it was a TOTAL mistake. I did not mean to. My apologies. THUMBS UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great to hear someone still remembers antelope valley from those days! I played trumpet with antelope valley back then(class of 80),and have fond memories of all those bands. We even took out sweepstakes at All Western 2 years in a row,I think it was '78 & '79 ! So, as amazing as Arcadia is - they are beatable!!!
I can't believe I found this video ! I was there that day! . I had three awesome years with AHS marching band , and from the Australia trip to the Rose Parade to the 1981 World Series between the Dodgers and the Yankees , it was the greatest thrill to be a part of it. When I see the grid passing under the camera , and see how every rank and step is right on , I remember how we worked our asses off to make it that way. Tom Landes , YOU ROCK!
Wow, the marching in this video is damn near perfect and of course that patented Arcadia sound is great! Whatever Tom Landes does sure seems to work and works consistently too!
I don't know about anyone else, but when that opening attack hits...my hair absolutely stands on end. PURE excitement. What an INCREDIBLE marching band.
Arcadia hasn't lost its touch! After retiring the West Arcadia Trophy, and becoming the Host Band for years (how long ago was that?? :-) It is fun to catch up on my alma mater and see that the band is just as good (probably better!!) than when I attended! Arcadia probably has the best program by far.... S. Deal 76'
there was nothing like long beach. and arcadia was legendary. the band i was with could never beat these guys. we could come close on the music, but their marching scores were, as you can see, near perfect.
I was class of 95! My senior year in the band, we added the "freshmen" class and the band really grew, but still not as big as the current size! Poway was still the biggest back then. I also love the old Arcadia Princess headdresses...all the way to the ground. Go Mr. Landes!
I went to Arcadia High 95-97 the last class of the three year format. When I was in band we won sweepstakes at EVERY competition. At Arcadia you audition for parade block every parade. Im proud to be apart of the Arcadia tradition. A bit rushed in tempo but I still got chills. Greatest HS band in the US.
Good lord, they took "Shrewsbury Fair" amazingly fast, haha. A bit too fast for my tastes, but still, WOW. Taking that huge block into competition, just crazy. Marching was impeccable!
I saw this performance,... & Magnolia's as well I was a junior in HS,... YOU GUYS WERE AMAZING!!
