This is great. I've just pulled my KY-27 out of the cupboard. I got it very cheap and about all I've ever done with it that is any use is learning what all the controls do. Does anyone know what DV camcorders with AV in are cheap and available? I've tested that system with an old Sony Video 8 camera feeding analogue into AC in on a Canon DV camcorder and it works fine. The Sony lens is much better and also you get better audio. Has to be NTSC. Otherwise it's the Sony GV-D1000 I suppose.
@trevorc4113 Thanks! Just had the camera serviced and it needed one capacitor replaced. Am currently gathering another round of test clips to post soon.
i cant get over how good the resolution is on this linear camera,im sure it can be better when you record straight to a disc or drive,,im looking for a deck or small drive to record mobile,,on location shoots,,can this camera record to a hard drive??
@bathwaterfilms Thanks for the comments. I'm not an expert by any means, so please keep this in mind. As far as I know, there is no deck or device that would allow you to do this. Most field recorders accept a firewire input, which means the signal leaves the camera already in a digital form. SVHS cameras are analog, so the signal must be converted to digital before entering any hard drive. In my case, I use a Panasonic AG-1980 that feeds the images from the SVHS tape CONT...
@bathwaterfilms CONT... to the capture card on the pc. This leaves me with an AVI file that I can edit, convert, etc. Now there have been a few times I've used an HV20 camcorder to accept the SVHS signal ( via BNC to S-Video cable), this way I was able to capture onto miniDV tape. I'm wondering if the output of the HV20 can be fed live to a hard drive recorder while the ENG is on. It should make for an interesting experiment. Will keep you posted!
I own a LOT of JVC 3CCD broadcast camcorder, some of them with the S-VHS built-in, like the GY-X2B (google it). I assume that x05e used a combination of JVC KY-27C+BR-S422 or BR-S411, those are dockable videos that can be mounted on the back of the camera. Don't forget that the KY-27C is a broadcast camera that comes with NO video attached to it. You select the video to use. For example I own a KY-D29 (digital) camera and I have docked to it a Sony DSR-1 digital DVcam video. CONT...
CONT... You can attach anything you want to those cameras. For a "semi-digital solution" to your problems: You can use either a Harddisk with AV input (like those from Datavideo), or an external DV video like the GV-D1000 from Sony, or even a portable DVD recorder with av-in (like the Sony VRD-MC10 - you can even mount it on the back of the camera with a bracket). Those cameras have AMAZING picture, so it is worth the 200 euros to attach a Sony VRD-MC10 so you can record directly to DVD :)
@Amigahellas Wow really glad to have heard from someone with some solid ENG experience. Funny, I just took mine to my local electronics shop for service...seems the contrast is off on it and only gets better after it's been warm for awhile. The technician (who serviced my AG DP800) will have a look at it...may be the capacitors.
Thanks again for the recommendations and information...extremely useful to me. Oh and yes, I chose to keep this cam because of it's amazing resolution.
@x05e Glad I can help. Any question feel free to ask. Tell your technician that the KY-27 service manual is all over the internet for free, google it to download the pdf. This can really help him. And yes, it is propably the capacitors. Also, the KY-27 can record directly to digital with an adaptor like JVC KA-P20U. Remove the old S-VHS vtr from the back and mount a Digital VTR with this adaptor to create a solid camcorder. I use it on my KY-D29 with Sony DSR-1 and the combination is unreal!
@Amigahellas Remember: If you ara using NTSC you need models with U at the end (KY-27U, BR-S422U etc). If you use PAL you need models with E at the end (KY-27E etc). Anything than U and E (like C) is just the model revision. This rule applies on any part, even adaptors. For Sony PAL models are identified by a P at the end (e.g. DSR-1P, UVW-100P etc). Any questions feel free to ask. O own and use for years lots of broadcast equipment, even BTS cameras, I will be glad to help :)
@Amigahellas Amigahellas, thanks again for the info and offer to help!! Just dropped it off for service today. As soon as I get it back I'll post a test.
hello,,with these linear ENG cameras with 3ccd chips, how do you record to digital with them?this one i have is panasonic wv f250,3ccd,it has s-video out and a bnc?out,,also svhs back..i want to record to a hard drive for mobile recording,,can you run a cable from s-video out to a deck?or do you need a capture card to do that,,?your video looks so good digitized,,imimpressed by the reolution of the svhs and 3ccd resolution of this camera,,is the resolution about 700 fields, lines?great,,,thnx.
I may be completely out of step here, but can you please tell me the set-up of this recording to a complete novice? I have a domestic s-vhs video recorder from JVC but not put any real s-vhs tapes through it yet (just using it as a normal VHS recorder.) If I get some real s-vhs tapes will I get the same quality from this machine or are we talking about a completely different ball game? JVC recorder model number HR-S5965. May be a European model number though as I am from the UK. Thank you!
@yogibear2k10 May I ask how you are using your SVHS recorder? Are you recording from the TV? Using an SHVS tape will give you a higher resolution (400 lines vs 200-250 on regular VHS). It may not seem like much, but it is definitely visible when you view it. There's a way to convert the regular VHS to S-VHS by drilling a hole on its underside, but I've never tries this method...I hear it works but tend to oversaturate the image. I have PM'd you some links which may help.
thnx so much for the info,,i just purchased this camera and it looks great,,its a monster to hold,,i was told you can send video straight to another camcorder then to pc?or another video storage,,,hard drive maybe??thnx for the info,,the recorder lights but doesnt record,,im going to take it in to be fixed,,,thnx again,,,S.
hi,,the recorder back on mine is not working,,do you know how or if it can be repaired or if it can be replaced by a newer model.that will fit this type of camcorder?thnx steven
@bathwaterfilms Hi Steven: You can use any recorder back that has the same connector that matches the one on the back of the KY27 (this was a standard among broadcast cameras at the time..I think). I've seen recorder backs that came in mini-DV..with a hefty price tag. Any electronic or video repair shop worth its weight can repair this easily depending on the problem. It's sort of a glorified VHS player (in a way...I might be oversimplifying it a bit).
As far as the HV20, you'll need to set the HV20 to DV normal mode, then plug the S-video output to the input of the AV connector on the HV20. Set the HV20's PLAY/OUT SETUP for AV/PHONES to AV. Now switch the camera to "Play" mode (like you're going to play a tape), then using the menu, select "REC PAUSE". This will set up the camera to receive the signal from the KY27. At this point you should see an image.
@x05e To record it, push the start button beneath the LCD and it will record it onto the miniDV tape in the HV20.
I don;t know where you live, but if you need a repair place, there's a store by me that is run by one guy, and he does amazing work on old stuff like this. He's repaired an SVHS player, a AG-DP800 3CCD cam, a Panasonic and Sony Mini-DV camera for me and never charged more than $125.
Let me know if you need me to explain anything further.
@x05e ok,,if you wanted to do me a big favour in this sure,,i live in the north bay area above san francisco,,i could send you the recorder back by fed ex with some cash for the fix and see if it can be made all better again,,,that would be great,,thats only if you would like to do that,,i wouldnt want to take you away from anything,,,,thnx again,,,,stevenpotter57@yahoo.com
@bathwaterfilms Ok, I need to see him later this week (he's repairing my sister's Digital8 cam). I will ask him about the recorder back first to be sure he does them (pretty sure he does though).. Can you tell me what the problem(s) are? PM me if you need to. Thx
The image quality is superb, kicks most consumer DV cams right in the bottom - not to mentions the camera itself just looks cool. What did you use to digitize the recording? From my own (limited) experience, the digital recording device is usually the bottleneck in getting good quality from analog recordings on a computer.
@Shqippy Hi and many thanks. I used the on-board deck to record to an S-VHS tape. From there I used a Panasonic AG-1980 4-Head SVHS recorder and fed that to my PC using a Turtle Beach Video Advantage PCI capture card. I have this cam in the closet, and since I hardly use it have been tempted to sell it many times...but comments such as yours have kept me from doing so! I may just take it out and shoot a bit more.
@Filiu1 Yes I agree. Despite the advent of HD, RED, etc, I still have this camcorder and can't bring myself to selling it. I love the image I acquire with it, just wish it weren't so heavy!
@Filiu1 It's not only not bad but it's way better than digital. It has a richness that digital doesn't, even though analog conversions to digital are good.
@dubified89 i`ve recently watchet a VHS tape, shot with Panasonic M 9000 camera.Evev it was VSH , and the camera is lower class than the JVC, the footage was good, and I enjoy it.The colour were very nice, and there was specific softnes which isnt`t disturbig - it`s actually very good.
You wouldn't happen to know the reason why my JVC GY-X2BE has a horizontal phase where I film a high luminous object and have the light flow over to the right of the object and also know why I have such a grainy image regardless of what I am filming?
@MichaelDaeche I'm not too technical with these camcorders, but I know I have an AG-DP8000 which had a weird discolored "banding" on the left third of the screen until I recently had it serviced and about 24 capacitors were replaced. It's not perfect now, but much better. The caps usually are the first things to go on these older analog units. You're issue may sound like a problem with the CCD, but I can't say for sure.
@ItsJustSkating Sorry for the delay. The camcorder records it to S-VHS tape, then I put the tape into an SVHS prosumer player/recorder, which then feeds the signal to a capture card inside my pc, which then converts it to an uncompressed AVI file.
These camera's are pretty dated..mid 90's I believe. They are heavy and huge. You can find them on Ebay, ranging from $150 - $1500 or more, depending on their condition, and the seller's integrity. Usually they have capacitor problems due to age. I was lucky with mine, which I purchased from Amato's in NY. Never given me any problems. I'd love to film a short with it, but it's not discreet if you take it outside. I also need to get a tripod plate for it which goes for $100.
I have a Panasonic AG-DP800 1994 S-VHS camcorder. How do I live capture my 750 lines video to my pc instead of dumping it on the 400 S-VHS tape? Thanks for your help...
Hello Pastor Mark. You will need an analog video capture card added to your pc. Use the S-Video output from the DP to feed the signal to it (better resolution than composite). They're sold at most PC stores and online. Try to get one that allows you to save in uncompressed AVI.
Reminds me of MiniDV.
