Winner-Anne Bancroft, The Miracle Worker ,,,, Bette Davis, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Katharine Hepburn, Long Day's Journey Into Night Geraldine Page, Sweet Bird of Youth Lee Remick, Days of Wine and Roses
i don't think edmund is cast very well, especially compared to the others--he doesn't have the same emotional believability. also he looks too healthy.... the others are so good though, i love this play so much
Everything Katherine's character, Eugene's mother, is feeling is still happening today as far as how lame/ignorant doctors and or psychiatrists are regarding certain drugs. Most of them never tell you how dependent the body becomes on them. Unless you've experienced it yourself do you understand the difference between addiction and physical dependency. What makes this so heart-wrenching is that these people clearly love each other, but the drugs destroy everything. I HATE DOCTORS too!!
Hepburn and Robards are excellent. Stockwell is OK. But Richardson, though a great actor, seems miscast; and I'm not sure I can explain why --- it's just that Sir Ralph's colors and acting strengths are not what the part calls for . . . for one thing, he was never a matinee idol, as James Tyrone had been-- and RR's presence is rather ponderous. Among contemporary actors, Christopher Plummer would be an ideal Tyrone:) --

I think Richardson did well. there is a version that Olivier did with a British cast , but I liked this one better, and I liked Richardson better.

@Pedropaulocastilho Yes, it does look like he smiles, but then it goes away.

This is the greatest film adaptation of a play I've ever seen. It's also the best slow-burn dysfunctional family drama I've ever seen.
Thanks to the criminally neglected Sidney Lumet and the sublime cast, this is pure Romanticism at its finest.

Incredible O'Neill-play, had the great joy of seeing an intense fantastic stage version of this last week, starring Liv Ullmann as Mary!
