Anytime I ever hear about this song everyone's talking about how this song sounds like the pixies lol
Speaking strictly as a musician, I have to say I can't listen to many songs period that don't in some way sound like, or have the same chord structure as many other songs that came before them. That's just how it works.
Anyway! I get to see Built to Spill this weekend in Austin YA!!! I thought this day would never come. I'm a little weepy just thinking about it...
To me, the difference between this and Modest Mouse, is that most of B.T.S.'s songs, have a more traditional structure, with* major changes within the song, but after half the song, you've heard it all, and you can predict the rest of the song, where as Modest Mouse makes use of that random element, staying unpredictable throughout, using different variations of the different segments, keeping it new. Also I prefer clashing to harmony, because it's still relatively new, and overlooked as "bad".
@maxzutter B.t.s Doesn't repeat to often... They just go back to the chorus at the end. Much like Modest Mouse popular songs. I just think Isaac Brock and Doug Martsch are both fucking Gods.
@juices1234 It's not that they repeat often, it's that when they do repeat it's so similar, where as Modest Mouse repeats each line differently, and they can switch between sections, while maintaining perfect transitions. B.T.S. stays generally the same within each song.

@juices1234 They are gods. Too bad Built To spill is hard as hell to find in music stores. I collected 9 of my modest mouse cds in stores. I have yet to find a single BTS one :/
@TheButtercupTube Yeah, you're right man. In fact, I read an article empirically confirming the fact that REM donated their souls to the all-superior Doug Martsch. This is why it vaguely sounds like them.
ok I never post on youtube because it's pretty much pointless but here I go...
So, with that said, as a musician and songwriter myself I'll say that yes, the chord progression is SIMILAR for one, not the same as the pixies.
Also you can pick ANY song in history and see that pretty there are almost no new chord progressions or ways to play them. what's so awesome about this and any good song is they took it and made it there own.
You'd have to go a lot deeper to find a song that was rip off.
@rafaelfrancarj exactly man it's obviously ripped from the pixies there's no way you could come up with this tune and not realize it's by the pixies still a good song but a bit to much like the pixies even the singer's voice sounds like black francis
i wish someone would listen to every song ever made and make a list of songs that, even if they aren't very well known, are simply beautiful. also this song reminds me of the funeral by band of horses.
Seeing these dudes at the Governors Ball Festival, you should come.
