  • I watched an Australian documentary about the games, where they mention this race. Angella Taylor went out the night before this race, against the wishes of her coach who wanted her to save her legs for this race. In documentary they eluded to fact that she came 3rd, because of not saving her legs for this final. She had beaten Barbel Wockel over 200 meters in a meet in Germany in september. Just before these games. Angella was very unhappy with this race.

  • Nice hair Merlene. ;)

  • without accusing anyone of drugs...22.19 is world class in 2011..and it was 1982. does that say anything at all?..keep in mind that drugs were a staple for most athletes in the early to mid 1980s, 1970s and 1960s and some were using them in the late 1950s...

  • I've watched the video where Angella Taylor admits she was using steroids during this period. So she was a drug cheat, but at least she freely admits to it which she never had to do.

  • @ozinmanc She did admit it, and wrote an excellent book about it. She was honest and had integrity. I am so dissapointed in Marion Jones who now is back tracking and saying she wasn't aware of what she was taking, she thought it was flaz seed oil. Her ex-husband C.J. Hunter says that he shot her up during the Sydney Games, everyone knows you don't shoot flax seed oil. Diane Williams who also admitted taking steriods, is now back tracking as well, and saying she didn't know what she was taking.

  • @ozinmanc yeh but its not cheating if everyone is doing it

  • Ottey was on drugs here she started at the same time Taylor did !

  • It's a fact that Angella Taylor, the girl who placed 3rd here was on a steroid programme.... the taking of performance enhancing drugs was and still is rife in track and field... no doubt some of the others in this race were on similar drugs... good race though and Kathy Cook was up there with 'the best!'

  • WOW...look how thin Merlene and Grace are.

  • Good god, was that really Merlene Ottey?!?!?

  • PKCW22 from the net - Fight Against Doping: Marion Jones. Sentecing, Austrian Appeal, Merlene Ottey -Oct 1,2008. This is a the porition of the article dealing with the Ottey affair. Also keep in mind that she tested positive more than once or twice. I will start here and continue if needed.

A scientest who handled a 1999 drug test for Jamacian sprinter Merlene Ottey says a mistake was made clearing the runner of a positive test.

    (will continue)..

  • "The sample shouldn't have been corrected at all", said Christiane Ayotte, the head of the lab in Montreal where the testing was carried out.

"And when they did, they used the wrong formula. It was a very stupid mistake. They turned it upside down. The problem is that no one from the IAAF side was able to correct the formula during the Arbitration. Later the arbitrators wrote that they were misled by the Ottey expert, but then it was too late."

U can find this on the net yourself

    Sorry !

  • Thanks for the information.

Apparently despite all the random tests, doping is still rampant. I wonder how the sudden surge of all those fantastic sprint performances came from. Particularly you know those from the US/Jamaican championships 2008 (and 2009 too) and from the Beijing Olympics?

It would be very disappointing that these Games heroes/heroines going around with inspirational speeches were really a bunch of cheats.

  • I agree it is sad, but random drug testing is just a tool, if they don't have a test to detect what the athlete is taking, how do they know ?; and there r many explainations or excuses, so it is difficult. That is why cocaine and majuana - things like certain kinds of pain medications, antihistamines etc.. are on the list of ban substance. I think they fear that u can mask your drug taking with other sitmulates..

  • What, antihistamines is banned too? I get dizzy taking antihistamines for hay fever. With it, I can barely run, lest run fast.

BTW, doping seems so uncontrollable. Bolt boasting 3 world records is on thin wire because those sudden surge of great sprint times were out of the world. It raises suspicion. Hope he will not do a Ben Johnson.

I also wonder if Ottey is still competing?

  • Further not many countries take the doping problem seriously- until recently it seemed that only Canada, Australia and England... really took it serioulsy or payed attention and did something about it. When WADDA formed, they invovled (got after) IAAF and the AOC to start punishing and demanding that countries start to take more responsibility for there athletes. Until just recently the US has been very lacks in punshiment and even acknowleging there cheaters, even when they had been identified.

  • Also many countries don't want to spend the money to test, or police if you will, these athletes, or maybe they don't have the money.. another reason WADDA seemed nessecary so that a least they could impose some punishment (or guidelines) of athletes that might be caught at the international level... but they can't control what goes on nationally or what goverments or countries do.

  • Does that mean even under the so called random testing, an athlete competing nationally will not be tested if that country does not have a testing system? And this same athlete only gets tested randomly when he/she competes in IAAF endorsed meets in an overseas country that has such a system; or when he/she just trains or resides in an overseas country that has such a system, even if he/she is not a citizen of that country?

  • That is correct. Most countries don't have an anti-doping agency. I have read on utube on the Christine Aarron posting that steriods are legal in Europe. Then I thought abound it and rememger a friend of mine use to have steriods sent to a postal box from his home country which was Brazil. He was a stripper. Anyway I think that even the countries that have drug testing, the test can't detect everything and they are so many variables to detection, and now proving - both samples must be positive.

  • If correct, then it can be easy to evade testing by simply disappearing back to the country that has no testing, clear the drug and come out competing overseas again?

  • Well of course Ottey denined it, with all her ranting about Krabbe being the great white hoped and then Krabbe testing positive before her... but most people know she was a long time drug cheat and was aready using here.

  • Ottey is still training and possibly running in 2009.

If she was a cheat she would not have dared to continue for so long. Year in and year out getting tested randomly is no fun and a huge burden really. I somehow feel there is some credibility about her. In fact the lab. that tested her positive was severely reprimanded for mis-handling her sample. If anything, Ottey's slowing seem to match her age.

Look also at how Linford Christie retired immediately & shyed from the public but not Ottey.

  • First off we talking about Ms. Ottey and not Mr. Christie who comes from England a country that takes drugs cheating very seriously, and he was injured at the time so he quite... under the cloud who cares. Ms.Ottey on the other hand had money and a hot shot lawyer to help her give excuses the lab that you are talking about was not reprimanded , in the manner in which you imply. In fact; this was one of the primary cases which got WADDA off the ground - because they realized that they needed...

  • Marchjoy1963. You seem ultra adamant about it!?

But the lab. indeed was reprimanded 4 mis-handling. If it was just a loop-hole that Ottey escaped through, the lab. should not have been reprimanded. Can you see the logic?

BTW, anyone knows of the story behind?

As I said, Ottey seems clean because she is not afraid of being tested randomly even up to 2009, despite having no chance of winning even a minor meet, & therefore very little cash to get. So what 's driving her if not for passion?

  • Obviouosly you know very little about how the track and field world ... if you r a draw, you recieve an appearance fee, many athletes - accommidations, some even air fare or transportation; above and beyond the winnings. Ramdom drug testing is not going to catch 10% of the cheaters, you think they don't know how to dodge the system ? You think just because it radom ?, I am not saying it doesn't help. She earns a good living and like to run, so she runs ... who wouldn't ?

  • As far as the lab goes what was this reprimand ? Were they closed down ? Were they restructured ? Was anyone fired ? No ,none of this happened. Her name was cleared in a court, that say the test were either inconclusive or mishandled (wasn't that what you said was the excuse), so she had enough money to fight. This is why WADDA was formed because athletes could fight it; so now WADDA makes suggestions to countries about discipline, which was not the case prevously, many cheaters go unpunished.

  • You should really find out more about WADDA, and your comment about being ultra adamant - if it had something to do with my reply being posted twice.. it is because I could see it posted the first time..The long and short of it is ... she is a cheater, a long time cheater, she is not the only one, there are several and they may not all be caugh; but WADDA is trying to keep up...

  • just so u know if Merlene resides in Jamacia, the Jamacian goverment does not have a national anti doping organization (at the end of 2008, I have not idea if one has been formed yet) so there wouldn't be any drug testing of their athletes, random or otherwise. I did here that they were trying to form one, though; and that parliment is pushing throught legislation which will enact the WADDA Code and UNESCO treaty on doping. But for now it's pretty lacks in Jamacia !

  • That is alot of bunk ! She had a lawyer have judge scream .. no lab was ever in trouble for this and it did set WADDA wheels going

  • How would you know what a huge bruden drug testing is or isn't ? Why r u speculating on why she is running ? I tired to explain before that athletes now money and can fight and do(on another posting. Like Marchjoy1963 is trying to explain this is why WADDA formed. It is obvious that you r a fan looking for some explaination , to explain why it is not true, but it is true. Further her longevity is what is most telling to me, being at the top of her game in her late 30's. She tested postive !

  • Hey athlete5399 if you are going to name Angella Taylor as a drug cheat in your discription for this race , why not name the other cheat or cheats in the race... especially considering ... she never test positive like Merlene Ottey did ! Love your videos they are treasures, but this constant slagging of Angella in your discriptions; like she was or is the only cheater ... especially in races like this one and the 100 metres here ... were she is not, seem unfair to say the least..

  • @Fatima502 I don't give fying flip whether you agree with me or not... Merlene Ottey started taking drugs before the 1980 olympics, just because she was never caught until 100, Taylor never failed a drug test either , neither did Florence Griffith but I am sure you all feel she was on drugs...

  • Hey Marchjoy1963 how r u ? I so agree doesn't athlete5399 rock large ! Angella is still my # 1 in fav Canadian track star ever ,and is such an awsome person.. in fact both of the Angela's (Angella's) r, I wish Kevin would repost the 200 from 1986, I never saw it until he posted it here... great race....

  • Another great posting by athlete5399 ! Thank You so much for all your wonderfull videos. Luv ya tons Angella !!!
