I made a song after I watched this movie for the first time, you can find it in the video responses or just go to my channel. Let me know what you think.
BTW, regarding the movie, the visuals are the best compared to any other movie or television show, foreign or domestic. Period. Nothing comes close.
The plot, however...let's just say that the Major's absence is truly felt, especially by Batou, and makes for a bit too much of a dour mood. And the philosophizing...way overboard. I almost felt they were trying to fit a philosophy course into the plot (which of course suffers accordingly).
An astute observation. However, the visuals did compensate for the lack of philosophical coherence, or for the de trop, ostentatious philosophical pedagogy, which was totally gratuitous.
I missed Major tremendously for she is an inextricable part of the 攻殻機動隊. Without her being physically drawn in, the plot felt like a ghastly ghostly shell.
But the film is beautiful and I enjoyed it tremendously. One of my old time favorites.
1) I am sure many, many Asian countries with memories of WWII will vehemently disagree with you.
2) Japan's "soft culture" contributions have mainly been recent. Most of its traditional culture is a derivative of East Asian culture in general. China and Korea were around for a lot longer than Japan's recent 1000 year history. To ignore their 'soft culture' contributions to Japan is to display ignorance at best, jingoistic, patriotic clap trap at worst.
I think that what they meant to say is "soft power" rather than "soft culture." Instead of 'hard power,' which principally involve fiscal/economic/militaristic influence of one country over others (e.g. USA), 'soft power' is a country's cultural prowess to influence another. Soft power dictates consumer emotions and brand-recognition. For instance, France has immense soft power, culturally. Anything French is haute couture, and Italian craftsmanship is considered superb.
Anime is animation originating in Japan. So this is anime.. Anime is just short from animation.. So is it computer generated or not it makes difference but it is still anime. I personally don't like computer generated anime because i think its not the true and real anime that i started watching but I watch it.

I see it as anime, including the movies. Its not a Western with cowboys and indians... :-) Seriously, I see it as part of the GitS anime group of episodes and movies.
Even among anime there are categories and this one is part of the best production; in animation and script. There are a lot of crapy anime with tons of girls, boobies, giants robots and so on. I just want to keep it clear
Wait... is Batou's voice actor Snake's voice actor too !!? \o/ !
But really, I love Batou, but I think the Major is the Snake like character in Gits... only she's female.
Anyway, awesome and moving trailer... I always liked the music and the imagery of this movie (I love the Gits series and Kanno music too...)... I even bought the soundtrack. As for the english/japanese VA... well I love Gits and Cowboy Bebop better in english... unfortunately, I can't say the same about all the anime VAs.
The ORIGINAL is without lyrics and is THE BEST. "Concierto de Aranjuez" from the master Joaquin Rodrigo. With lyrics sounds beautiful too, but nothing can compares with the instrumental version. And in the hands of Narciso Yepes, you can listen the best performance in my opinion. =)
This is a stunning trailer that sadly wouldn't work for the US. I love the song (which is why I watched it), but the animation shown with it was also excellent.
oshi is the best director but he made innocence depressing, as much as i loved it, solid state society was great it had all the elments but the director couldt simply reach oshiis perfection and hauntingness, in the end they are all prefect oshii"s, shirows and kamiymas ghost, as we all have our subjective reasons for loving one movie more over another.
In my opinion one of the gretest anime ever! with a stunning OST and in special way ....this awesome amazing wonderful song.....it's "his" perfect suite!!
The 1st one was good simply because it was Ghost in the shell, but i didn't enjoy it as much as i enjoyed the SAC series and movies, im yet to see innocence.
The Second GiTS movie is so much complex and sophisticated than the first one. I recommend it watching the Blu-Ray version of it. Since the picture quality and the subtitles are much better than the japanese ones. I mean they subtitles makes much sense if compare to those awful Dreamworks version.
No i did not meant that the US version is better than the Japanese one, its just that the subtitles of the us version were terrible, but that is because of the greediness of Dreamworks Pictures. they just brought the movie to States without giving it the treatment this movie deserves. That is why the Bandai Blu-Ray version is so much superior. Sorry if i gave the wrong impression.
u kinda confused me but it's all clear now. I gotta agree with you even though i only own the blu-ray from Bandai only. Did you know that the blu-ray version from Bandai has even better quality and audio from the US version? that already said a lot.
Usually the Japanese dub is better. I honestly haven't seen the original dub of Innocence... but USUALLY it is better (though there are some good American dubs... I don't mind the GitS dub).
As a matter of fact. Your user name itself tells me about your excellent knowledge about electronics. I share the same opinion as yours. I was only teasing the hater below us as he was trying to insult me in other video clips.
As much as I like the animated series and movies. They just don't give you nearly sense of scope and scale that the three manga do. They don't even metion Poseidon Industrial(yes folks, the same one thats in Appleseed and Megatech's biggest competition)in the animated versions.
Lykos42, I didn't say that the animated versions sucked or anything like that. I just found them to not have the same depth and scale as the manga. The manga(especially, man-machine interface) really gets into it, and shows you just how far computerization can go. Plus, the manga just has this goofy, yet seriousness to it that just makes it very charming. :3
well of course you cannot bring the same scope or depth of a manga or a graphic novel or any book into a movie. You just have to adapt it for a different medium. Well at least they do a better job of making their books into movies compare to Hollywood.
The films are more realistic than the manga and have a heavier philosphical bent. The manga does have notation on the technologies filling the margins though. Its a different kind of depth.
THe films are very distinctly Oshi and the manga is very shirow. So they are very seperate entities to begin with...though personally I think Oshii makes everything better.
I was twelve when I first saw the first Ghost in the Shell, and looking back its pretty much no compromises animation. I am definitely going to watch it again to see if I was missing anything.
call me greedy, but i would love to see Oshi do a third movie of ghost in the shell. One last one would make me well happy, his intepretation of ghost in the shell is amazing and blew my mind as a kid and as a adult.
yeah but to be honest i'm not excited at all for it, i dont have much faith in hollywood treating it right, they'll dumb it down. Besides, Oshii did a film that it is pretty much the closest well get to a faithful live action version of ghost in the shell a film called 'avalon' it's ridiously similar. However, i really want to see Oshii do one last ghost in the shell movie to conclude his universe of ghost in the shell.
Wow~ i totally agree with you there, and it doesn't matter if Steven Spielberg will be the producer. Hollywood has tendency to create campy version of the live movie. Ghost in the Shell movies' production value have already exceed the standard Hollywood movie. So, why bother to make them live?
Sigh...Hollywood is just not right. Their doctrine is to please the audience that has the least contact with the source materials. I just hope the get the live-action film over with so we can forget about it.
This film is amazing with so much to look at. Dreamworks should have gotten English actors to do the voices instead of having to read subtitles while your trying to look at the film.

I think both movies have the same script but told from different viewpoints.
The first one is about the ghost struggling inside te shell and finally scaping-trascending from it.
The second is about the consciousnes psyche, the egos in the pedestals at the cathedral of egoes. The tricks of the synthetics creating the dejavu illusion switching past present and future at the hackers castle. The little girl at the end with her doll in an effort to become a godess as the cretor is MASTER PIECE !!!
Honestly, though - I never really enjoyed the Anime as much as I did the Movie (First one, haven't had a chance to see the second one yet). Nothing wrong with the show, just I prefer to stick with the Story that the Movie established for it self.
Just thought I'd stick this on here real quick though - For those who didn't know, it is two different story arcs.
The Movies and the Series are completely separate.
In the First one, it ends with how the Major and this American-built AI are now merged together as a new entity, however she doesn't exist in a shell - She's free flowing throughout Cyber Space.
So, in the Second Movie you don't see her at all except at this point where she's downloaded a portion of her personality to this Android Manequin (Who, of course, looks nothing like her :P) to help Batou out in his investigation.
In fact, the Movies are fairly independent from the entire concept it self. The Series follows the Manga almost to the teeth where as the Movies just take a lot of the key elements and characters and goes on it's own arch almost.
The films and anime series are set in alternate universes, with the original Ghost in the Shell film set in 2029, and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence set in 2032. The anime series, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG, are set in the year 2030. The third film, Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. Solid State Society, follows up on many of the events that ended the second anime season, Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG.
i kno for a fact that this is a good anime, but it came on so late i would always fall asleep half way through every episode. i have no clue what its about tell this day
hey is this just a rumor or is there going to be a re-release of Innocence with the actual dubbbed voices of the GITS series? Can someone get back to me about this.
I saw it, it was good, personal favorite. It's different from Sirow's work, it's the part od GITS SSS franchise. Good police thiller with the hint of usual GITS depth.
Appleseed have 2 films more, you can too see Dominion Tank Police, and New Dominion Tank Police, i suggest you to read all the manga of Masamune Shirow (Orion, Ghost in the Shell's, Black Magic, Dominion, Appleseed,...), because the films change of directors, and there are very different between them.
Guess what, the people who did all the other GITS stuff gained the rights back and are re-releasing it in the US with an English dub. YAY!!! I can't wait for it.
Indeed. Thats a huge reason why I found this movie so appealing and riveting. Philosophy like in this movie, is not something you normally encounter in an anime. It adds to the depth of the movie greatly, allowing you to get into the minds of the characters and see the beliefs/ideas guiding them. Its also logical they would be quasi-philosophical considering they have cyberbrains loaded with mass information, which they can recall and reflect on without a hint of vagueness encumbering them.
i can see why some would find it disturbing, i thought that it was disturbing at first also because ther is no logical reason as to why this couldn't happen to our real world today with the state its in wiv technology and the men who are in charge of the world and us civilians who are using technology for wars etc but also in the sense of that is what makes this movie so beautiful, its a lesson to us all as human beings to cope in this modernised technological world.
Is that suppose to be a bad thing? "Scary" events are what make this world fascinating. Hell what would life be like without threats and problems? Humans are naturally drawn to them, and the attempt at resolving such problems is the sole reason for existing in my oppinion, whether it be in a love relationship, or in a war. Without this process of resolving conflicts and new conflicts constantly arising to resolve, life would be very boring.
It's a BRILLIANT movie. I'm no anime nerd (because I think most anime is shit) but this ripped out my innards and stuffed them back in and blew my mind for good measure. WTF. This is genius.
Wasn't this up at Cannes but was defeated by that retarded movie Fahrenheit 911 for the Palm d'Or? Silly politicking. In 50 years time, no one will give a fuck abut Fahrenheit 9/11.
But Ghost in the Shell will be an enduring classic.
I'd have to disagree about Fahrenheit. It deals with one of the most incredible events of our era that's already gone down in history.
Besides...GitS is like literature. Don't get me wrong, I love the GitS universe and it's a big inspiration for my ambitions, but it's like artwork. The world doesn't care THAT much about an art piece.

The song 'Follow Me' at the end provides a very haunting end of the movie.
Its almost as if the singer received a request from Motoko, so Batou would hear it.
I have seen other anime, .hack//sign, Bleach, but this one is the most haunting and quote worthy.

Masamune Shirow is a genius!

anakin0405 3 years ago
anyone seen Ghost In The Shell: Solid State Society?
EAFSQ9 3 years ago
I saw it, it was good, personal favorite. It's different from Sirow's work, it's the part od GITS SSS franchise. Good police thiller with the hint of usual GITS depth.
susfal 3 years ago
Appleseed have 2 films more, you can too see Dominion Tank Police, and New Dominion Tank Police, i suggest you to read all the manga of Masamune Shirow (Orion, Ghost in the Shell's, Black Magic, Dominion, Appleseed,...), because the films change of directors, and there are very different between them.
SoujiOkita102 3 years ago
does anyone know any other 'ghost in the shell' type manga movies?
anakin0405 3 years ago
Appleseed is by the same author. It's a bit different, but in many aspects also very similar.

Is it only me or dose Ghost in the Shell: Innocence have a little disney influence in it?

Not really, how do you get on this idea? To me it seems to be the most anti-disney film ever.

Guess what, the people who did all the other GITS stuff gained the rights back and are re-releasing it in the US with an English dub. YAY!!! I can't wait for it.

The film is OK. Worth watching for the quality of animation alone though. The first and the TV series are fantastic.

Heavy on the philosophy. Ponders the question of what it is to be human and whether it can or should be duplicated.
quesondriac 4 years ago 2
Deometris 4 years ago
The first movie was also heavy on similar philosophy. Same with GITS:SAC -- the tachikoma

this movie is a bit disturbing i watched the trailer and the movie....
Fenderdx390 4 years ago
in what way disturbing , the storyline?
GaaRa1881 4 years ago
i can see why some would find it disturbing, i thought that it was disturbing at first also because ther is no logical reason as to why this couldn't happen to our real world today with the state its in wiv technology and the men who are in charge of the world and us civilians who are using technology for wars etc but also in the sense of that is what makes this movie so beautiful, its a lesson to us all as human beings to cope in this modernised technological world.
hope this makes sense :S
skydreams2008 4 years ago 3
heyy i understand you, but that seems a bit scary in a way.
GaaRa1881 4 years ago
Is that suppose to be a bad thing? "Scary" events are what make this world fascinating. Hell what would life be like without threats and problems? Humans are naturally drawn to them, and the attempt at resolving such problems is the sole reason for existing in my oppinion, whether it be in a love relationship, or in a war. Without this process of resolving conflicts and new conflicts constantly arising to resolve, life would be very boring.
Deometris 4 years ago 2
its a good film this a bit talky in places but youll forgive it for the story and visuals

Ghost in The Shell is by far the best anime ever created.
kyoto56 4 years ago 6
It's a BRILLIANT movie. I'm no anime nerd (because I think most anime is shit) but this ripped out my innards and stuffed them back in and blew my mind for good measure. WTF. This is genius.
Wasn't this up at Cannes but was defeated by that retarded movie Fahrenheit 911 for the Palm d'Or? Silly politicking. In 50 years time, no one will give a fuck abut Fahrenheit 9/11.
But Ghost in the Shell will be an enduring classic.
sklanger 4 years ago 14
Nothing short of a progressive anime like Ghost in the Shell could get away with quoting a fairly obscure passage of the Bible and Paradise Lost.
thoughtLayer7 4 years ago
And eva, but what it does and doesnt quote is always up for arguement.
projectorraven 4 years ago
I'd have to disagree about Fahrenheit. It deals with one of the most incredible events of our era that's already gone down in history.
Besides...GitS is like literature. Don't get me wrong, I love the GitS universe and it's a big inspiration for my ambitions, but it's like artwork. The world doesn't care THAT much about an art piece.

Ghost in the Shell FTW!
