Hitchens manages to state a falsehood in the first sentence, by calling fascism "the original 20th century totalitarian movement." Meaning that somehow International Communism under Lenin wasn't really totalitarian? I cannot really see how one could say the Nazi Party were secular. Why would it have the support of the Vatican for a start? Why did Hitler never renounce his alliegence to catolicism? The only people to actually stand up to anything the Nazis did when they were in power were the catholics and if you look at the March 1933 elections, you will find that the Nazis had a significantly lower percentage of the vote in predominantly catholic regions - and this was no coincidence. Hitler resented the church and sought to destroy it's influence in Germany in the long run. Nazism was a firmly secular movement.
