That's true elje, but a lot of local news stations cover stories over a larger area. I guess it depends on how an individual would define 'next door'. For example my local news covers crime stories that may take place in cities 1-2 hours away (yet for some reason, they never cover any other type of story from those cities). I imagine it also varies depending on your local news station, location, etc.
gated communities are the beginning of the end. when people build walls around themselves because they feel threatened, the country has succumbed to the terrorist within.
