@jmb102093 It's just about lowering audio above the threshold so you get a more even volume across the compressed track. Less dynamics, but it allows you to raise the volume more without clipping issues. The ratio specifies how much you want to lower everything above the threshold, and the attack/release parameters determine how long it'll take until the compressor starts working and how quickly it stops working, respectively.
What about it is confusing? You're taking the peaks (the loud parts) and lowering them, while also (with makeup gain) making the low volume parts louder. So basically with a whisper or a yell, they'd be the same volume. Ratio is how many db it takes to raise the level post-compression 1dB. 4:1 means it takes 4dB coming IN to get 1dB out. Hope that makes sense... ;-)
I have on the beats by dre pro's I heard it lower that piano sound (like a pickin sound or push of the keyboards) and bright the bell sound. It would be nice to hear it in the mix.
@ninincnals Yeah... everytime I hear something I like and want to hear more of it. Then I decide that's retarded. But if it works here, I gotta try it.
@danielwaves Any three frequencies in particular? or just randomly select them?

Has anyone else heard of the concept of picking 3 frequencies and pushing them hard? Thats brilliant

Very useful tip. I will try it out.

but... we didn't get to hear it in the mix... so how do we know if it sounded any good?

@Diefordethklok333 That exact part plays at the end of the track...

Thanks for that tip. Is the EQ before or after the compressor for this example?
