You are also incorrect about where the spaces go when using brackets. Spaces go before the first bracket and after the second bracket. For example, (like this), this is correct.

I learned that Australia was a continent when I was a kid (mid-late 90s), but as an elementary teacher now I can tell you that the new term for that continent is Oceania. Australia and Australasia (less commonly) are simply two other words for referring to a continent that includes Australia, Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, New Guinea, and New Zealand.
