If you listen to The Kids Aren't Alright of 1997, then Honey, This Mirror Isn't Big Enough For The Two Of Us of 2003 (The Offspring and My Chemical Romance, respectively) you'll notice that they are remarkably alike.

There is only a limited number of chord progressions, and drum beats. I say the coincidence is purely that, a coincidence.
