  • This is beautiful. Like the art of chess itself, it looks like it requires talent, patience, and hard work. Thanks for uploading.

  • 0.o This is awesome.. I wish I had a lathe, sadly I live in an apartment and don't have room. Any suggestions on how to make such nice pieces without a lathe?

  • hey, i am a big chess fan, and i really want to make my own chess peices by carving them. I do not have a lathe, i just want to do it with a set of carving knifes i bought. is this a realistic aim? even if it takes alot of time.

  • wow nice stuff i madoe a crappy one today on a dremel modified lathe and it broke but im only 14.. would it be worth spending 150 pounds on a proxxon mini lathe? get bak to me mate anyway excellent work 5/5 subbed

  • just wondering but what sort of tool was that, that you used to make the chess pieces? the thing that turned the wood???? pleas respond!!!

  • Sorry besartbaleic, I do not make them to sell on, to me it is just a hobby.

  • would it be possible to order a full set of pieces ? I love playing chess, however I only play it on quality boards with quality handmade pieces so wondering if u can help me out

  • u did every single peice on the lathe thats amazing!

  • Knights are really a piece to be hand-carved, but other than that, magnificent work.

  • the knights are....

  • What idiots disliked this? So he didn't say what size blanks he was using, pick up a cheap plastic set and you'll get an idea of proportions. Great vid, i too would like any sheets you have on making them. I have quite a lot of dry bog oak and blackwood and I'm contemplating whether to get holly or boxwood for the other set. I suppose any contrasting woods would look well.

  • Can you send me some samples?

  • Hi. Is the wood green or kiln dried?

  • cool

  • Whats te brand of the tools you use? Have you a set miniature woodturning tools such as Crown, henry Tailor or Hamlet? Or do you use standard tools in the smallest size?

  • ok so my sister won a republic chess tournament and she doesnt like the king and the pawn in her set can you teach m how omake any of them?or even both?

  • hey can you send me a sheet with details, please. i have carpenter tools so maybe i could make them

  • No description as to size of wood to start with, what kind of chisels should be used or how.

  • @jarhead4God

size of wood is 1 1/4" squares turned to 1" diameter. Normal small turning chisels used. Knife and carving guage used on Knights, King and queen after initial turning.

Can send you a sheet with details

  • @silverfoxuk1 :I have 36 pieces of 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" x 3 1/2" sugar maple that I am going to turn probably in late September (My shop is in Houston and is not air conditioned). If you think that your details can be adapted heck yea send them on. I accept any help that I can get. Do you want my snail mail or email address?

  • @silverfoxuk1

A joy to watch. : ) Could I get a copy of your sheet with details please Silverfox?

  • ... ever heard of video?

  • This may be a stupid question but how do you make the details on the top of the peices. Any help would be great.

  • The only pieces that need "top Details" off the lathe are

[1] Castle.. shape the battlements with a fine file

[2] Queen.. form shape of Crown with a carving guage

[3] King... after turning remove from lathe and flatten the Cross part on disc sander

[4] Knights.... These requre a bit more work...remove from lathe with the tops turned as shown, flatten [shape] on disc sander...draw profile of horse head on the flattened part and cut shape with a coping saw, then blend in shape using sandpaper.

  • @TeenWoodworker : The only stupid question is the question that is not asked. As for the detail work, I'm a newbie and haven't the slightest idea. Sorry.

Praise His name for He is worthy

  • love the box man

  • Great skill and very talented, would have loved to have seen you doing some off the turning.

  • This is great, beautifull. Have not enough words for. Very nice! I have the lathe, the skils and the tools, so i gonna try it. Do you make the chessboard to?

Do you made this for selling? And what is the avarage price?

    Regards from Holland

  • motion please

  • Wonderful!

  • that is so amazing, i really wish i 1: had the skills, and 2: had the tools haha. amazing job, absolutely beautiful work.

  • I just wish I had a the tools, using regular carving tools like knives and gouges takes so long and it's quite difficult.

  • Can I buy a full-piece set?

  • Nice work. I've been meaning to do this with my lathe. I wish I could find boxwood.

Maple is good though. A lot of people don't realize that pallets are a good source for hardwoods like that.

  • how much would three pieces cost?

  • I could make you 3 pieces no charge or do you 6 piece sample in various woods again no charge

  • no charge! (= AWESOME!!so i would just give you my address and u could send it?

  • @silverfoxuk1 l see where you don't charge anything for your 3 or 6 piece sample in various woods. Would you consider hand turned and rubbed writing instruments. If this is do able, let me know how many and send be your snail mail address and I will shoot it out the next day.

  • Nice work, and thanks. : )

  • nice work

  • Great job!

    Regards,

    Pudersepp

  • My son's a chess fanatic. You're a first rate carpenter and put out a nice video! Fran NJ

  • Wonderful job! I've been planning my own chess set for some time and this has really inspired me to get going with it. Could you tell me where you got your boxwood? I've been searching the internet without any luck. My second choice would be to go with figure maple (easily obtainable), but I know boxwood is traditionally used. Thanks and great job again!

  • Hi tugaoen55, Pleased to hear you are thinking of making a chess set, you will find it very rewarding making your own unique set. I accumulated my Boxwood over many years from people who have cut down boxwood bushes and trees and yes it is a bit hard to come by over here in the UK and expensive. I have made them in Maple too which comes out very good too. If you need anymore info let me know i can make and send a sample of each piece for a pattern if you wish??? [no charge]

  • Thanks silverfoxuk1! Any help you can offer would be much appreciated. I'm here in the U.S., in Ohio. I already have some lathe experience (and a lathe!) so that part will hopefully be easy. I've been on ebay regularly looking for suitable wood, but just can't find boxwood.
