The drums dont' always have to be considered "difficult" to be good man. Lars is in his 40's give him some credit. Thats still a long double bass part. Sometimes a song calls for drum parts to support the song, not for the drums to stand out all the time.

Ok, Heres the deal, James Voice may not be 100%, but at times it is up there. Think about how many shows they do for 2-3 hours per show. As for the drums, different equipment/playing different tempos does not mean the drums are crap.
Like I said, Not too many bands can say they have played with the San Francisco Orchestra which is a Professional Level 6 and was in 1999 well after 1983-1992 that you have mentioned. As a Musician myself, some of their newer Music is more difficult to play.
And the drums souds horrible. they sound better than st. anger(worst album ever recorded) But they still sound bad.
