If anything, this movie just showed how rich of a culture Russians had back then... and it's not like the American characters were without their flaws... if anything the american characters were more corrupt than the russian ones.

This was set in the late 19th century (just before 1900) and the Russian Jews (main character and his mouse family) are seeking freedom from Tsarist Russia (which periodically purged Jewish populations because of anti-semetic beliefs which flourish in Russia). The cat's symbolize the Cossak mounted infantry that usually did the dirty work for the Tsar.

You're an idiot, the film portrays the struggles of 19th-20th century immigrants.

The thing is, the 1st scene movie took place in IMPERIALIST Russia. Not Soviet. Russia didn't turn Soviet until 1917. However, the movie took place in 1885 and 1886.
