I'm sorry but I'm really getting tired of ignorant people who know nothing about the sport of luge making videos of WHY IT HAPPENED. Yes, it was pilot error. Yes, Whistler is a dangerous track. But he wasn't trying to slow down. Him putting his feet down is an instinctual maneuver in luge, and because he was inexperienced, he didn't try to fight as hard as possible in order to get back on the line because he let go of the "steering wheel" as soon as his feet were on the ice. I luge so I know
This is by far the most irresponsible and absurd form of pseudo-sport ever made. What the fuck is wrong with people, the main purpose in the designing of these tracks of death is to be opened as possible to allow the cameras to film the events in detriment of any form of safety devices like fences or closed-brake-ramps.
@mcmlxvi also, luge is unbelievably controlled. Its not like skiing where you can buy a ticket, get a sled, and go from the top. And luge has very very few deaths, I can only think of 3. And 2 were before the 1970's. Most olympic athletes have at least 7-8 years of experience. He had less than 3. And think about skiing and how many people die in that sport. I'm pretty sure downhill courses are more like "tracks of death" than luge.
Besides the pictures of him "bracing himself" and "trying to stop" if you look closley you can also see him kissing his own ass goodbye. I hate when people make stupid videos like this. Get to the damn point. Slide shows are for people who are too poor to have videos. And this Beatles cover sucks too. lol Ok thats enough hate for one day. haha
May Nodar Kumaritashvili rest in peace, but thank you for providing a clear view of this accident so we all can understand what transpired and help support the effort to prevent this type of incident from ever occurring again.
I don't think he was trying to slow down with his hand,, I think that had more to do with G force and doing 144kph, either way RIP. Well done for doing his best and dieing with his boots on doing something he loved.

Thanks feedbackbro i have look absolutly everywere and only seen slideshows or articles.yours shows excactly what happend and how i no its a slideshow but it gives the best detail i could ask for thanks a million
@cortese100 He died because some douchebag architect decided that putting steel poles this near of the track would be useful for no good reason. Nobody thought that accidentaly an athlete could crash against them like it happened to this poor guy
if u pause it at 0:37 u see where he came down from the bank and hits that smaller wall. u notice he hits the curve not the stright-a-way, this is what threw his body in the opposite direction towards the poles. it was a matter of INCHES. if he hits the straight-a-way part of the smaller wall all thats gunna happed is a violent roll over. Really is to bad he couldnt correct maybe those few inches to get himself not to hit the curve. truly shocking moment R.I.P nodar
ok he was going way to fast for that turn cuz normaly when the sleds are coming round those type turns they are in the middle of the entire turn wall he was all the way at the top ya he tried slowin down but he was way to high for that last turn when he came into that he had to know he was FU**ED cuz when he came down he instantly started to loose control and flip if he had successfully passed that corner he would have made a record at least 144km is 90.1 mph he was crankin when he hit the pole
ust a question...Would half a meter in height of extra fence saved his life? In such a critical point extrordinary safety measurements must be taken into account for such sad accidents never happen again...Oh my God, and those deadly poles waiting for him!!!
If Vancouver was going to spend a ton of money on the Olympics, why not put some of it towards making the luge safer in the first place and not after the accident?
They should have made the turn transfer to straight aways have possibly a tube cover over it so they lugers go into something like a pipe so they can fly off the track. The top of the pipe should be clear so people can see them.
You can only use ice on blades like that, it's even more dangerous with plastic. That's most likely what he hit to cause him to be thrown thrown off. They shouldn't have had those poles where it was, especially steel. You could actually hear the steel ring from the finish line as if you were right next it.
There was no possible way save him after such a hit. Luckily, he died quickly and most likely not in much in pain. I feel sad for the family and friends, and hope that they're doing well RIP
@Methstories The sport is not "dumb", or unsafe for that matter. Its actually safer than driving a car down the street. What was bad was the engineering that the olympic crew did on the track and its walls.
Im wondering was he really trying to slow down there..from what I could see of it he was completely out of control coming through that long sweeper probably because of the speed sadly and I think he knew he was in big trouble at that point.
Just a observaton of what was a tragic accident....Rest in Peace Nodar
@Racingnut24 I know what you mean...it's debatable whether he was deliberately trying to slow down or simply reacting instinctively out of fear. I think it's clear that he knew he was in trouble.
If you are driving your car and start to spin on ice and you panic and hit the brakes...are you trying to slow down? For sure, you're trying to avoid an accident and using whatever means are available to you and I believe you instinctively react by trying to slow down. That's how I see it.
@Racingnut24 Right...the original footage is too fast for anyone to really determine if he was trying to slow down....you can't even see him hitting the steel post.
I WATCHED THOUSAND VIDEOS TRYING TO FIND EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED i googled searched,yahoo searched,and look on everything! this is the perfect discription! THNX FEEDBACKBRO!
This guy let a piece of gold get in his way of his common sense. He didn't figure that out, until it was too late that it wasn't worth it, and it never is. Don't make the same mistake as he made. That's all. Happy Travels.
This incident teaches a person to follow their heart. If you have a premonition that something bad is going to happen, DON'T DO IT. IT's that simple. It's better to be laughed at than dead. Who cares what others think. You know yourself. You know what you are capable of and what you are not. It's up to you what you do and what you can't do. Don't let anybody ever pressure you into being someone you are not. That's all.
@communitysharer1 I'm not here to have a go, but I don't think he really had a 'premonition' that something bad was going to happen. As a vert skateboarder, we often fall from great heights and during these falls it's our human instinct to try to make these as soft a landing as possible. Clearly in this video Nodar saw that this corner wasn't working out as planned, so it was his human instinct to try to slow himself up to make - like us skateboarders - his crash as soft as possible.
@communitysharer1 I'm no expert in luge but it's the same human instinct, just obviously when you're travelling at speeds of over 90 mph it's much harder to make your crash 'softer' as i mentioned earlier, as all crashes at that speed have a huge chance of being painful.
Nodar wouldn't be in the olympics if he didn't love his sport - he was there because he wanted to be and chose to push the limits, something that takes a very brave and courageous sportsman/woman to do...
OMG i feel so sorry for his fanily and that this tragic accidnt will not ,ever happen again and that they should make the sides of the luge taller so that if somethin does happen again like that they might not die !!!!!!!!!! :(
I have viewed a number of videos on this tragic accident, and I must say that this is the most thoughtful one I have seen. The account of the athlete's desperate attempt to slow down was haunting; he knew what was coming. The frame by frame "animation" was a nice presentation. The details of how the whole incident played out......the reaction time of the rescue team was perfect.
The accident was a tragedy, but I hope it forced officials to reconsider future track designs. Rest in peace.
Excellent comment. This is the first video that I've seen that showed his crash with respect in just trying to see what went wrong. I noticed the same things. He knew going into curve 16 that something was wrong and tried everything he could to correct it and slow down. Pilot error, sadly yes BUT if the course were properly designed for safety, he would have survived the accident and be alive today. Your comment was most mature, thank you.
i also noticed that the short wall that was supposed to protect the riders angled back toward the poles at the last second. he hit that angle which probablly threw him in to the poles. i think that if it werent for that angle he might have gotten away with a few injurys but more importantly his life
thanks for this. i think your link is both respectful and objective. i've had a hard time finding a decent analysis.
Its truly sad, but its very true that high level sports like this are with great risks. but it def. seems like those posts should have had some padding, that's a major wtf? esp. since this is said to be the "fastest course in the world." thanks for your post and commentary amidst a lot of hysteria.
Thanks very much. In capturing the still images from the original video I noticed Nodar was putting his hand and foot down - which looks to me like an effort to slow down. After thinking about what happened it occured to me that his efforts to slow down were too successful. I think he slowed too much and came down off the wall at a steeper angle than he was aiming for and this lead him to go across the track and hit the corner - which is what lead to the awful bounce into the poles.
ok i can c how you have your views on this but you really need to take this vid down. im not trying to b mean but you have to think about this guys family. its disrespectful to put soemthin up like this while his family and friends are grieving about his death
@feedbackbro I'm acctually a luge athlete. and i respect what you have done here although you did miss inform the public. He most likley didn't try to slow down he was scared and put his feet down in fear. Which causes you to loss control. When i slid on this track accouple of weeks befor the olympics i was amazed how many time this happend to sliders coming out of this curve they should have done something soner.
... umm being as cold hearted as you are, you should have been raped and thrown in a dumpster a long time ago you disrespectful piece of shit. I'd say go jump off a bridge but I doubt anyone would even care move your worthtless ass to the side of the road even by kicking it. Good job for reminding us all how many fucked up losers are out there that have some how managed to survive for such along time off their moms tit.

1. I'm not emailing this video to his friends and family so unless they specifically go looking for videos like this then they should be safe from their publication;
2. My video was made from content that is already all over the web - I simply added my observation about Nodar apparently trying to slow down before the crash;
3. I find it hypocritical of you that one of your favorite videos is "The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald" but yet you find my video offensive.
I watch that and without video commentary I automatically think " Bullshit that shoud have never happened!" What a Disgrace for the CANDIAN OFFICIALS to call that an ACCIDENT on his part!
I agree, Nodar's family would not want to see this or any other video showing his crash in gruesome detail. However, for the rest of us who never knew him I think seeing it in this way, and with some melancholy music, helps us to identify with him and bring us closer to him and, thereby, feel the sorrow and pain over this incident and helps us to remember him.
There should have been padding on those beams. I heard the guy died instantly. I hope that's true, that way he didn't feel any pain. My heart goes out to his family, RIP
The guy who made this course is a fucking retard and he is probably sitting at home thinking that he just killed someone and will never leave his house again. RIP
um, of course they wouldn't have padding on the beams. If they thought there was even the slightest need for padding then they would've known the course had a major design flaw- which they clearly didn't. No one was expecting a body to be flung over that railing
What injuries did he sustain that killed him?

he was young professional and he would have been alive if not stupid organizers who did not spend time to think of some safety measures.
so can't say anything nice about this young man give us pleasure and shut the fuck up!

That's all.
communitysharer1 1 year ago
@communitysharer1 I'm not here to have a go, but I don't think he really had a 'premonition' that something bad was going to happen. As a vert skateboarder, we often fall from great heights and during these falls it's our human instinct to try to make these as soft a landing as possible. Clearly in this video Nodar saw that this corner wasn't working out as planned, so it was his human instinct to try to slow himself up to make - like us skateboarders - his crash as soft as possible.
thenameisjimbob 1 year ago
@communitysharer1 I'm no expert in luge but it's the same human instinct, just obviously when you're travelling at speeds of over 90 mph it's much harder to make your crash 'softer' as i mentioned earlier, as all crashes at that speed have a huge chance of being painful.
Nodar wouldn't be in the olympics if he didn't love his sport - he was there because he wanted to be and chose to push the limits, something that takes a very brave and courageous sportsman/woman to do...

@Refman33 This is a very good point. I didn't notice this until you pointed it out but I think you're right.

thanks for this. i think your link is both respectful and objective. i've had a hard time finding a decent analysis.

If you crash doing 144km/hr on anything its not going to end well, poor guy.

ok i can c how you have your views on this but you really need to take this vid down. im not trying to b mean but you have to think about this guys family. its disrespectful to put soemthin up like this while his family and friends are grieving about his death
LyleLevac 2 years ago
@feedbackbro I'm acctually a luge athlete. and i respect what you have done here although you did miss inform the public. He most likley didn't try to slow down he was scared and put his feet down in fear. Which causes you to loss control. When i slid on this track accouple of weeks befor the olympics i was amazed how many time this happend to sliders coming out of this curve they should have done something soner.

No offense meant but:
1. I'm not emailing this video to his friends and family so unless they specifically go looking for videos like this then they should be safe from their publication;
2. My video was made from content that is already all over the web - I simply added my observation about Nodar apparently trying to slow down before the crash;
3. I find it hypocritical of you that one of your favorite videos is "The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald" but yet you find my video offensive.

Where is the PADDING around those solid steel beams?!?!?!
This is a tragedy that could have been avoided. Clearly someone who designed this course was lacking common sense regarding safety.
So very sad.
helipilot727 2 years ago
@helipilot727 @akanehimura
um, of course they wouldn't have padding on the beams. If they thought there was even the slightest need for padding then they would've known the course had a major design flaw- which they clearly didn't. No one was expecting a body to be flung over that railing
