The swearing in of the President is a mere formality. The new President becomes President when his predecessor leaves office for whatever reason. The swearing in is not an essential part of the US Constitution as regards the President. For example LBJ became President immediately on the death of JFK and his mad rush to get sworn in was totally unnecessary. LBJ was already president!
you are are correct that 'The new President becomes President when his predecessor leaves office' but you don't 'assume the power of the presidency' until you take the oath of office.
There is a technical difference between the two. It may not mean much but it is there.

This is a great video! In case anyone was wondering who the man was holding the Bible for FDR to JFK it was the Clerk of the Supreme Court. In 1965 LBJ started the tradition of having the President's spouse hold the Bible. Once again, great job! It would be a good idea to add Obama as well.

The Bushes feel a sense of entitlement to power. GHWB never fully got over his defeat by Clinton. Notice GHWB's swearing-in, the look on his face. He's like "Yes! I'm finally president!" The Bushes treat the presidency like some sort of trophy.

i love obama and am ecstatic that he is going to be the president, but it should be interesting to hear/see the crowds reaction when he recites the first line, "i, barack hussein obama". your gonna see some frowny faces on alot of republicans when he says his middle name lol

It won't matter whether or not Obama uses his middle name. The frowny faces from the Republicans will start as soon as Obama says the words "So help me God" and he officially becomes President of the United States. Then the Republicans will get their comeuppance for giving us eight nightmarish years of George W. Bush.

Actually, the Chief Justice recited the whole oath before FDR did. I'm sure he was reading it off a piece of paper. The current way of repeating line per line is just more dramatic.

1. Go to elementary school and figure out so basic grammar, 2. The democratic controlled congress couldn't do anything because the Republicans would always threaten filibuster. 3. What are people supposed to say after they are attacked. He did what any president would've done and as i stated before if anyone or thing had done those same things they too would've had the same ratings. 4. The swearing in of the President is a mere formality. The new President becomes President when his predecessor leaves office for whatever reason. The swearing in is not an essential part of the US Constitution as regards the President. For example LBJ became President immediately on the death of JFK and his mad rush to get sworn in was totally unnecessary. LBJ was already president!

you are are correct that 'The new President becomes President when his predecessor leaves office' but you don't 'assume the power of the presidency' until you take the oath of office.
There is a technical difference between the two. It may not mean much but it is there.

The date provided on this clip for Nixon's inauguration is incorrectly stated as January 20, 1961. Ironically, that is the date Kennedy took office; Nixon was inaugurated on January 20, 1969.
