  • President Ford had epic posture.

  • Nixon looked scard

  • 4 words that make a president "Yes sir, Mr. Rockefeller"

  • Do you guys notice that they are taking the oath for the United States...and not the oath of the United States of America.

  • Cousin It from the Addams family was there, at 8:30!

  • Technically the oath is 35 words long. "So help me God", the additional 4 words included in your word count, are traditional. The oath, as written in the Constitution, ends with "...preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States." The tradition part came about with George Washington. After the Constitutional oath, Washington added off the cuff "so help me God" and every president since, with prompting from the oath giver, has uttered those additional 4 words.

  • Most of these people are trash, especially FDR.

  • You just gotta love President Ford's posture.

That's a Yale Law man, right there.

  • Nice 60 HZ hum with Regan audio

arnt we paying these guys big bucks to do a good job

  • The date on Richard Nixon should be Jan 20 1969. (not 1961).

  • Thanks, it has been corrected on the next video (the one which includes Obama).

  • Anyone know if Nixon ran as former v-p in 98?

  • Richard Nixon was dead in 1998 so not he did not run, he dies in 1994.

  • sorry about the typo I meant 68

  • It's okay :D That makes sense :P

  • He ran in 1968 and won and was reelected in 1972; resigned in 1974.

  • Its a sigh it was raining on bush XD

    the end was near

  • it's an excellent video. Pls make another one and add President Obama.

  • I have! There's a link to it in the video description at the side.

  • Love Jackie Kennedys Dress

  • joe biden in the president of the united states.

  • Joe Biden will probably run after Barack Obama's 2 terms but I bet that a Republican will win because not very many people like Joe Biden enough to elect him as President. Joe Biden is only Vice Presidential material just like Former Vice President Dick Cheney.

  • Just out of curiosity, why did they randomly switch the swearing-in location from the East Portico to the West Front? Is there a reason for that?

  • It normally was on the East Portico, but Ronald Reagan wanted to be swon in, in the direction of his beloved California, so he was sworn in on the West front, because he was sworn in faced to California.

  • the west front is able to accomodate more guests

  • Ron Paul and Peter Schiff - 2012

  • legendary

  • So I guess Pat Nixon began the tradition of the First Lady holding the Bible.

Lyndon Johnson is the only U.S. President to be sworn in by a woman.

George H.W. Bush was the first President to use their full name in the swearing in.

It's amazing to see how young they all looked when they were sworn in. Then see them as they left office.

  • Taking the oath of office IS NOT what makes you president. The constitution says that at 12noon on January 20th, the person with the most votes in the electoral college becomes President. THAT'S IT. The oath is just for ceremony. SO move on.

  • No, the person with the MAJORITY (over 50%) of electoral college votes becomes President. As clearly seen in the 1824 election, just getting the most votes is not enough.

  • Lol, bush his hand was doing the talking :P

  • i noticed that, too

  • baseball4388!!!

WOW Check out what baseball4388 wrote. In 16 Years, (well 15 since he wrote his comment a year ago,,lol)...

So in 15 Years Baseball4388 is not only going to be the Chief Justice of The United States of America, but he's also going to be the President Elect & he's going to Swear himself in as President!!!!! Wow talk about Overacheiving.. Tha't s incredible!!!

    ROFLMFAO LOL

  • Did anyone else pick up a major mistake from this short film. Its right before your eyes. This looks like an A&E short, they put on at end of cable in classroom.

What a horrible blunder..See if you can find it

  • If you're talking about the typo on Nixon's year, you're about the 100th person to notice and it's fixed on the next video.

  • I noticed Ike added an extra "The" to his oath:

"the office of THE President of the United States"

    Oops.

  • I also liked how JFK says "sweah"

  • "I Jawn Fitzgerahld Kennedeh do sahllumleh sweah..." LOL.

    It's kinda adorable tho ;)

  • the two comments above this response made me LAUGH.

  • Skikbike (hooever) pls one argument at a time. He's damaging the constitution & hurting his place in heaven...

I have studied the bible for years, I don't believe in organized religion, from what I've read The worst thing a person can do to tick off the almighty is to be a hypocrite.

    he don't like that one.

Now Let's put the bilbe away.

  • Comment removed

  • my teacher made us see this video!lol

  • George Walker Bush and Ronald Reagan sound most confident of the 13 Presidents

  • i thought nixon sounded pretty confident and proud.

Johnson sounded the most depressed...... i wonder why?

  • Probably because JFK just died... just a hunch.

  • Sorry. My Apologies Obama did say "so help me God". Thank you for your corrections. So help me God to make better Utube comments in the future.

  • Better get your hearing checked.

  • 1/20/01 was the begining of 8 misserable years.

  • totally agree with you

  • Comment removed

  • Obama did say "So help me God"...

  • He did say so help me god!

  • Obama said "so help me God" both times!!!

And even if he hadn't, John Tyler didn't say "so help me God".

  • Theodore Roosevelt didn't either in 1901. He said, "And thus I swear!" He also wanted to have "In God We Trust" removed from currency.

  • this may sound stupid, but is nixons date wrong?

  • Yes, but I corrected it on the next video.

  • ah i see, sorry for bitching lol

  • Yeah good catch. The Nixon date is wrong. I watched this video a couple times but never noticed. If he had beaten JFK in 1960 it would have been right.

  • GHWBush messed up too...

  • since the government is secular, they should keep the 'so help me God' part out of the oath

  • yes, but is the government really secular?

  • bush sucks hahaha...obama for your momaa!!

  • So Bush Sr. interrupts Rehnquist in the same place Obama did -- and, if you watch closely, you can see Clinton nearly interrupt him twice (I think he actually starts to say "that I will faithfully execute..."). Seems like the breaks are chosen randomly, without rehearsal, and someone who is nervous is liable to jump the gun, rather than wait patiently.

So it might have happened before, had Rehnquist not brought it in writing (unlike Roberts, who appeared to go noteless).

  • Beautiful

  • Let's be fair--Roberts made the first mistake, but Obama easily could have caught it and went on without that awkward pause. All in all, i'd say the whole thing was pretty unprofessional.

  • I really think Obama made the first mistake. I believe he should have waited for Roberts to say "....do solumnly swear," and THEN make his first response. I think it was Obama who threw off Roberts. But I love him anyway.

  • Thank you! That's all I wanted to confirm for myself. My life is complete now lol.........But seriously, good for him (Obama) Obviously he's saying..........Let's get on with it!

  • What a neat and historic compilation! Thank you for posting this collection.

  • president to the united states????????????????????president OF the united states

  • roberts fucked up the oath

  • Whatever legal scholars say about Chief Justice Burger, you cannot take away that the man had total command of this moment. And notice that even William Rehnquist, a constitutional genius, carried a cheat sheet (and used it the first few times out).

  • Since Bush didn't preserve the Constitution with the Patriot Act, does that mean he's going to Hell now?..

    :D

  • Bush MIGHT have damaged the constitution, this has caused public scrutiny (eg public booing). Our acts on earth effect our position in Heaven. According to my understanding or the bible salvation is determined by ones acceptance of Jesus as lord and saviour. Bush claims to accept Jesus so he will go to heaven.

  • Oh sweet jebus..

Just great, a bible nut answers my rhetorical (sarcastic) question...

p.s. Mr. High and mighty, my comment was in reference to the part where he explicitly states "preserve the US Constitution... so help me god".. by his, and apparently your belief, he negated what he swore on "god's" name and the holy bible therefore according to your skewed religion he should be going to Hell.

  • Watch Bush's oath, they broke it down to 3 words statements...seriously. You'll see Roberts screwed it up

  • Bush's 2nd oath of office I mean

  • *20 January 2009; Senator Barack H. Obama; West Front, U.S. Capitol; Chief Justice John G Roberts, Jr.

  • After seeing this compilation, it's clear Obama made the *first* mistake by not waiting for Roberts to get to the part "solemnly swear" before starting the echo. Roberts needed to take a tiny breath after saying "Barack Hussein Obama," but Obama should have known to wait til after the "solemnly swear" before starting.

  • agreed

  • Roberts also stuffed up the second line of the oath. He said "that I will execute the office of President of the United States faitfully." You can see how confused the President was.

  • When Obama completely screwed up the beginning, it threw Roberts off.

  • Obama's oath did not go well.

  • Im going to be the next president of the United States, yeas i am british but i will still become president.

I will introduce a new law by which all americans must drink at least 3 cups of tea a day.

I will then introduce a fat buster/fitness program, but in order to do this effectivly, i must close down all fast food restaruants.

Vote for me America, i can bring REAL change

  • you wernt born here and tea sucks(except green tea)

  • Yeah i don't like tea either, and yes i know i wasn't born in America lol, thanks for reminding me of that lol. Anyway it was just me fooling around. Don't take it seriously lol.

  • Their are only 35 words. The line 'so help me god' is a tradition and is not actually contained in the constitutional oath.

  • listen closely to the bill clinton inauguration, he also started talking too early, similar to what Obama did :p

guy giving them the lines shouldn't take long pauses halfway a sentance like that -.-

  • i noticed that too

  • when will there be true separation of church and state?

  • God will always be present

  • why couldn't the chief justice just use NOTES?! and didn't they rehearse first? (or at least watch this video compilation? heh) was kinda anticlimatic.

  • lol! president obama choked on his first sentence! he's probably too nervous or unfamiliar with the oath!

  • It wasn't Obama, it was the guy giving him the words who moved "faithfully" to the end of the second sentence.

  • To be fair, Obama also cut into Roberts before he finished the "do solemnly swear", which might have unsettled him for the next bit.

But I am shocked they fluffed up something so important. With millions watching from around the world, you'd have thought they'd have rehearsed. :-)

  • Thanx for the great video. Will use tuesday for my K-5th grade classes.

  • One of the other changes was made when President Reagan took his oath was that he moved the ceremony from the east side of the building to the west. The phrase "so help me God" was added by President Washington and was the first tradition established regarding the ceremony.

  • I notice some changes: The move from the Chief Justice using the second person singualr to using the first person singular; the move from right to left of the dais; the placement of the spouse in the middle, holding the Bible; the playing of Hail to the Chief after the oath. Any others?

  • Comment removed

  • One more difference, fishhead06. Rhenquist wore gold stripes on the sleeves of his robe for George W Bush's oath, but not for Clinton's and no one else wore the stripes at all.

  • That's weird. I said those 39 words and I didn't suddenly become president.

  • But doesn't Bush's term only expire at Noon?

  • Thanks for this cool peace of info! Are these nuclear codes for launching of nuclear weapons in the event of a mass nuclear attack on us?

  • hey richard nixon was inaugerated in 1969, not 1961.....

get ur facts strait "medeas biggest fan"

    :P

  • Okay, it was obviously a typo. It's correct in the infobox. Besides, if you know the correct date, who cares?

  • this video is smokin' ya'll.

    :D

  • Great compilation! thanks

  • If you look at George W. Bush's inauguration, it's raining, and when you look at his raised right hand, you will notice that while he says the oath of office, his hand is moving in time when he talks.

  • It's "Harry S Truman," not "Harry S. Truman." No period after the S. Fun Fact: Truman's whole middle name was "S" -- the single letter. Wasn't short for anything else.

I know, I know -- can't help myself. It's a frackin' disease. Apologies to all. (But i's stll true.)

  • I love how they say "governor, are you ready to take the oath of office?" because you can imagine that for each one, they're thinking, "well, that's the last time they're calling me that!"

  • The Chief Justice has the strange honour of being the last person to call them by their old title and the first to call them by their new, "Congratulations Mr. President!"

  • It was raining when George W. Bush got sworn in!!! Look at his sleeve as you see a closeup of him with his right hand raised up; in addition to the embossed drops on the camera

  • Wrong date given here for Nixon's first inauguration. It incorrectly says 1961. It was actually 1969.

  • I know, it will be fixed in the next video.

  • Excellent video!

  • Hmmmm... a bit of wishful thinking??

  • The new video (including Obama) is already up. Click the link at the side.

  • I like the song "Hail to The Chief" and the ruffles and flourishes.

  • This is a great video! In case anyone was wondering who the man was holding the Bible for FDR to JFK it was the Clerk of the Supreme Court. In 1965 LBJ started the tradition of having the President's spouse hold the Bible. Once again, great job! It would be a good idea to add Obama as well.

  • I enjoyed this entire video, except for the part from 9:14-9:56.

  • Axemplay-

FDR memorized it because he was president for over 12 years. LOL!

  • It was his first inauguration though.

  • george h w bush looked so sad during clinton's inauguration...

  • The Bushes feel a sense of entitlement to power. GHWB never fully got over his defeat by Clinton. Notice GHWB's swearing-in, the look on his face. He's like "Yes! I'm finally president!" The Bushes treat the presidency like some sort of trophy.

  • i love obama and am ecstatic that he is going to be the president, but it should be interesting to hear/see the crowds reaction when he recites the first line, "i, barack hussein obama". your gonna see some frowny faces on alot of republicans when he says his middle name lol

  • It won't matter whether or not Obama uses his middle name. The frowny faces from the Republicans will start as soon as Obama says the words "So help me God" and he officially becomes President of the United States. Then the Republicans will get their comeuppance for giving us eight nightmarish years of George W. Bush.

  • Well, George W. Bush crossed his left fingers at the moment he said "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States". Then we found out why.

  • I think he got more sense then that. If he says that, there would be national outrage.

  • Same diety, people

  • How come FDR is the only one who memorized the whole thing before he got to the ceremony?.

  • Actually, the Chief Justice recited the whole oath before FDR did. I'm sure he was reading it off a piece of paper. The current way of repeating line per line is just more dramatic.

  • then imagine how uncomfortable its going to be when barack obama shares the stage with george bush, since obam's basically say that Bush is the worst president ever!

  • Why does that matter. It is a name not like he actually knew the guy. Also that is his fathers last name He did not choose it you ignorant, racist jerk

  • wtf retard

  • wats up with people hatin on bush, every president has his highs and low in approval ratings, remember right after 9/11 when everyone thought tht bush was the greatest president ever?

  • yea but his low lasted 6 years and he not only started a needless war he also caused an economic recession on a scale not seen since the depression. And on the 9/11 approval ratings a monkey would've gotten the same ratings

  • it wasnt 6 years, its more like 2-3 years, thts y he got reelected, u're not very rational are u??? yes, his rating started 2 go down after 2003 but its not like it could've been higher, it's the highest of any president with 92%. and he's not responsible for the recession, right after the democrats took the senate and the house, the economy has been goin down, it was fine when the republicans were the majority. and on the whole war issue, most democrats was for it as well

  • 1. Go to elementary school and figure out so basic grammar, 2. The democratic controlled congress couldn't do anything because the Republicans would always threaten filibuster. 3. What are people supposed to say after they are attacked. He did what any president would've done and as i stated before if anyone or thing had done those same things they too would've had the same ratings. 4. Rational people do not support presidents who F***ed up our once respectable country

  • Every time I watch the GW Bush inaugration, I keep expecting Al Gore to step forward and punch him in the nuts. And I'm surprised to see that Dan Quayle wasn't either drooling or picking his nose in the background.

  • i hate nixon

  • 9:32-9:45 *coughs* Bullshit *coughs* Bullshit.

  • Hey, I'm viewer number 13,300. Nice.

  • Thanks a lot for posting this video. It's very tough to find this stuff elsewhere.

  • Since posting this I've found moving images of Truman's first swearing in and a clearer recording of Ford's. I intend to upload the new video - with Obama and a corrected date for Nixon - in January.

  • Sweet I can't wait! I'm on the waiting list for the Obama inauguration, so hopefully I'll get to see it for myself.

  • The swearing in of the President is a mere formality. The new President becomes President when his predecessor leaves office for whatever reason. The swearing in is not an essential part of the US Constitution as regards the President. For example LBJ became President immediately on the death of JFK and his mad rush to get sworn in was totally unnecessary. LBJ was already president!

  • you are are correct that 'The new President becomes President when his predecessor leaves office' but you don't 'assume the power of the presidency' until you take the oath of office.

There is a technical difference between the two. It may not mean much but it is there.

  • 20 January 2009 Senator Barack Obama, West Front U.S. Capitol Chief Justice John Roberts

  • These are relaly interesting to hear. Where did you find thes?

  • Go to

    inaugural . senate . gov

click history, then click chronology. They are all listed there.

  • U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 1 (complete oath):

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

    -period-

  • The date provided on this clip for Nixon's inauguration is incorrectly stated as January 20, 1961. Ironically, that is the date Kennedy took office; Nixon was inaugurated on January 20, 1969.

  • lyndon looks so sad in that picture....i can only imagine what was going through his mind.

  • Well, Jackie Kennedy was right next to him. He must have felt pretty bad for her. I mean, her husband had just died.

  • I hope that Barack Obama or John McCain, if one wins, he will take the same oath on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009.

  • Notice that when Bush II took the oath, he somewhat hesitated when he said "So help me God."

Well, I could be wrong, but that's what it sounded like to me.

  • The second he said the four words he became the most powerful human on Earth. Wouldn't you be a bit hesitant at that moment?

  • Well, I'm just saying. It's something I noticed; I hadn't seen it happen with anyone else.

  • Well I think you would be a little nervous too.

  • Two words that make a president (in 2008):

    1) Shaving

    2) Cream

For a fuller, musical and funny explanation, type "Presidential Shaving Cream" in the YouTube search bar.

  • Two words that define the presidency: shaving cream. (And to prove it, type in "Presidential Shaving Cream" in the YouTube search bar.)

  • Jan.20 2009. President-elect Obama will take that oath.

  • So many presidents have said those words only to become liars. Partisan politics makes me sick.

  • When Bush said those words who would imagine the country would be a mess today.

  • umm why would George Bush SR. be at Clinton's Inaugral, please explain. If i were in his shoes, i would of been back home crying to bits

  • Well, Bush WAS Clinton's predecessor. And if you look at Bush Jr.'s inauguration, you'll see Clinton as well.

  • It is custom for the out going President to be at their successors inauguration. Carter was at Reagan's.

  • then imagine how uncomfortable its going to be when barack obama shares the stage with george bush, since obam's basically say that Bush is the worst president ever!

  • He was lol but it will be a big shift, worst president (Bush) to best president (Obama)
