Technically the oath is 35 words long. "So help me God", the additional 4 words included in your word count, are traditional. The oath, as written in the Constitution, ends with "...preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States." The tradition part came about with George Washington. After the Constitutional oath, Washington added off the cuff "so help me God" and every president since, with prompting from the oath giver, has uttered those additional 4 words.
Joe Biden will probably run after Barack Obama's 2 terms but I bet that a Republican will win because not very many people like Joe Biden enough to elect him as President. Joe Biden is only Vice Presidential material just like Former Vice President Dick Cheney.

I have studied the bible for years, I don't believe in organized religion, from what I've read The worst thing a person can do to tick off the almighty is to be a hypocrite.
Yeah good catch. The Nixon date is wrong. I watched this video a couple times but never noticed. If he had beaten JFK in 1960 it would have been right.
So Bush Sr. interrupts Rehnquist in the same place Obama did -- and, if you watch closely, you can see Clinton nearly interrupt him twice (I think he actually starts to say "that I will faithfully execute..."). Seems like the breaks are chosen randomly, without rehearsal, and someone who is nervous is liable to jump the gun, rather than wait patiently.
So it might have happened before, had Rehnquist not brought it in writing (unlike Roberts, who appeared to go noteless).
Let's be fair--Roberts made the first mistake, but Obama easily could have caught it and went on without that awkward pause. All in all, i'd say the whole thing was pretty unprofessional.
I really think Obama made the first mistake. I believe he should have waited for Roberts to say "....do solumnly swear," and THEN make his first response. I think it was Obama who threw off Roberts. But I love him anyway.
Thank you! That's all I wanted to confirm for myself. My life is complete now lol.........But seriously, good for him (Obama) Obviously he's saying..........Let's get on with it!
Whatever legal scholars say about Chief Justice Burger, you cannot take away that the man had total command of this moment. And notice that even William Rehnquist, a constitutional genius, carried a cheat sheet (and used it the first few times out).
Bush MIGHT have damaged the constitution, this has caused public scrutiny (eg public booing). Our acts on earth effect our position in Heaven. According to my understanding or the bible salvation is determined by ones acceptance of Jesus as lord and saviour. Bush claims to accept Jesus so he will go to heaven.
Just great, a bible nut answers my rhetorical (sarcastic) question...
p.s. Mr. High and mighty, my comment was in reference to the part where he explicitly states "preserve the US Constitution... so help me god".. by his, and apparently your belief, he negated what he swore on "god's" name and the holy bible therefore according to your skewed religion he should be going to Hell.
Yeah i don't like tea either, and yes i know i wasn't born in America lol, thanks for reminding me of that lol. Anyway it was just me fooling around. Don't take it seriously lol.
After seeing this compilation, it's clear Obama made the *first* mistake by not waiting for Roberts to get to the part "solemnly swear" before starting the echo. Roberts needed to take a tiny breath after saying "Barack Hussein Obama," but Obama should have known to wait til after the "solemnly swear" before starting.
why couldn't the chief justice just use NOTES?! and didn't they rehearse first? (or at least watch this video compilation? heh) was kinda anticlimatic.
One of the other changes was made when President Reagan took his oath was that he moved the ceremony from the east side of the building to the west. The phrase "so help me God" was added by President Washington and was the first tradition established regarding the ceremony.
I notice some changes: The move from the Chief Justice using the second person singualr to using the first person singular; the move from right to left of the dais; the placement of the spouse in the middle, holding the Bible; the playing of Hail to the Chief after the oath. Any others?
If you look at George W. Bush's inauguration, it's raining, and when you look at his raised right hand, you will notice that while he says the oath of office, his hand is moving in time when he talks.
It's "Harry S Truman," not "Harry S. Truman." No period after the S. Fun Fact: Truman's whole middle name was "S" -- the single letter. Wasn't short for anything else.
I know, I know -- can't help myself. It's a frackin' disease. Apologies to all. (But i's stll true.)
I love how they say "governor, are you ready to take the oath of office?" because you can imagine that for each one, they're thinking, "well, that's the last time they're calling me that!"
The Chief Justice has the strange honour of being the last person to call them by their old title and the first to call them by their new, "Congratulations Mr. President!"
It was raining when George W. Bush got sworn in!!! Look at his sleeve as you see a closeup of him with his right hand raised up; in addition to the embossed drops on the camera
Well, George W. Bush crossed his left fingers at the moment he said "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States". Then we found out why.
This is a great video! In case anyone was wondering who the man was holding the Bible for FDR to JFK it was the Clerk of the Supreme Court. In 1965 LBJ started the tradition of having the President's spouse hold the Bible. Once again, great job! It would be a good idea to add Obama as well.
The Bushes feel a sense of entitlement to power. GHWB never fully got over his defeat by Clinton. Notice GHWB's swearing-in, the look on his face. He's like "Yes! I'm finally president!" The Bushes treat the presidency like some sort of trophy.
i love obama and am ecstatic that he is going to be the president, but it should be interesting to hear/see the crowds reaction when he recites the first line, "i, barack hussein obama". your gonna see some frowny faces on alot of republicans when he says his middle name lol
It won't matter whether or not Obama uses his middle name. The frowny faces from the Republicans will start as soon as Obama says the words "So help me God" and he officially becomes President of the United States. Then the Republicans will get their comeuppance for giving us eight nightmarish years of George W. Bush.
Actually, the Chief Justice recited the whole oath before FDR did. I'm sure he was reading it off a piece of paper. The current way of repeating line per line is just more dramatic.
then imagine how uncomfortable its going to be when barack obama shares the stage with george bush, since obam's basically say that Bush is the worst president ever!
Why does that matter. It is a name not like he actually knew the guy. Also that is his fathers last name He did not choose it you ignorant, racist jerk
wats up with people hatin on bush, every president has his highs and low in approval ratings, remember right after 9/11 when everyone thought tht bush was the greatest president ever?
yea but his low lasted 6 years and he not only started a needless war he also caused an economic recession on a scale not seen since the depression. And on the 9/11 approval ratings a monkey would've gotten the same ratings
it wasnt 6 years, its more like 2-3 years, thts y he got reelected, u're not very rational are u??? yes, his rating started 2 go down after 2003 but its not like it could've been higher, it's the highest of any president with 92%. and he's not responsible for the recession, right after the democrats took the senate and the house, the economy has been goin down, it was fine when the republicans were the majority. and on the whole war issue, most democrats was for it as well
1. Go to elementary school and figure out so basic grammar, 2. The democratic controlled congress couldn't do anything because the Republicans would always threaten filibuster. 3. What are people supposed to say after they are attacked. He did what any president would've done and as i stated before if anyone or thing had done those same things they too would've had the same ratings. 4. Rational people do not support presidents who F***ed up our once respectable country
Every time I watch the GW Bush inaugration, I keep expecting Al Gore to step forward and punch him in the nuts. And I'm surprised to see that Dan Quayle wasn't either drooling or picking his nose in the background.
Why does everyone say Bush was the worst president. I like Bush. And you can't call Obama the best president until he at least serves one full day in office, and that's still almost two months away. Besides, the worst president would have to be either Franklin Pierce or James Buchanan.
Since posting this I've found moving images of Truman's first swearing in and a clearer recording of Ford's. I intend to upload the new video - with Obama and a corrected date for Nixon - in January.
The swearing in of the President is a mere formality. The new President becomes President when his predecessor leaves office for whatever reason. The swearing in is not an essential part of the US Constitution as regards the President. For example LBJ became President immediately on the death of JFK and his mad rush to get sworn in was totally unnecessary. LBJ was already president!
U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 1 (complete oath):
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
The date provided on this clip for Nixon's inauguration is incorrectly stated as January 20, 1961. Ironically, that is the date Kennedy took office; Nixon was inaugurated on January 20, 1969.
then imagine how uncomfortable its going to be when barack obama shares the stage with george bush, since obam's basically say that Bush is the worst president ever!

So I guess Pat Nixon began the tradition of the First Lady holding the Bible.
Lyndon Johnson is the only U.S. President to be sworn in by a woman.
George H.W. Bush was the first President to use their full name in the swearing in.
It's amazing to see how young they all looked when they were sworn in. Then see them as they left office.

But he lost. How can he take the oath?

Why does everyone say Bush was the worst president. I like Bush. And you can't call Obama the best president until he at least serves one full day in office, and that's still almost two months away. Besides, the worst president would have to be either Franklin Pierce or James Buchanan.
nikkissippi121 3 years ago 3
I wouldn't say he was the WORST. However, I'm not crazy about the man. I'd say Hoover was actually the worst president we've had.
RavenX08 3 years ago
it wasnt hoover's fault the stock market crashed, however hoover could've done more to relieve the american people from the depression

I agree. Iam a black man, and I feel that President Bush has done a bad job. However, he has had a LOT of unfortunate shit to happen while in office.
JHoward21 3 years ago
agreed. about Obama.
I hate bush with a burning passion.
Matt482942 3 years ago
Yeah, most people do. I just don't because I don't really see a reason to hate him.

Thanks a lot for posting this video. It's very tough to find this stuff elsewhere.
badtown88 3 years ago
Since posting this I've found moving images of Truman's first swearing in and a clearer recording of Ford's. I intend to upload the new video - with Obama and a corrected date for Nixon - in January.
Medeasbiggestfan 3 years ago
Sweet I can't wait! I'm on the waiting list for the Obama inauguration, so hopefully I'll get to see it for myself.
badtown88 3 years ago

He's already the best president?
Wow.

lyndon looks so sad in that picture....i can only imagine what was going through his mind.

Well, Jackie Kennedy was right next to him. He must have felt pretty bad for her. I mean, her husband had just died.

I hope that Barack Obama or John McCain, if one wins, he will take the same oath on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009.

Notice that when Bush II took the oath, he somewhat hesitated when he said "So help me God."
Well, I could be wrong, but that's what it sounded like to me.
RavenX08 3 years ago
The second he said the four words he became the most powerful human on Earth. Wouldn't you be a bit hesitant at that moment?
Medeasbiggestfan 3 years ago
Well, I'm just saying. It's something I noticed; I hadn't seen it happen with anyone else.
RavenX08 3 years ago
Well I think you would be a little nervous too.

Two words that make a president (in 2008):
1) Shaving
2) Cream
For a fuller, musical and funny explanation, type "Presidential Shaving Cream" in the YouTube search bar.

Two words that define the presidency: shaving cream. (And to prove it, type in "Presidential Shaving Cream" in the YouTube search bar.)

Jan.20 2009. President-elect Obama will take that oath.

So many presidents have said those words only to become liars. Partisan politics makes me sick.

umm why would George Bush SR. be at Clinton's Inaugral, please explain. If i were in his shoes, i would of been back home crying to bits
ChrisMiran 3 years ago
Well, Bush WAS Clinton's predecessor. And if you look at Bush Jr.'s inauguration, you'll see Clinton as well.
RavenX08 3 years ago
It is custom for the out going President to be at their successors inauguration. Carter was at Reagan's.
UncleGeorgeW 3 years ago
then imagine how uncomfortable its going to be when barack obama shares the stage with george bush, since obam's basically say that Bush is the worst president ever!
ChrisMiran 3 years ago
He never said he was the worst. He said his policies failed.
