  • Good tutorial. I want to incorporate some of what I learned here on FL studio and Edison. Try that out, it should come natural to you G!

  • Peace. at 2:08 how did you get it too play for so long? Peace.

  • @justcrazy187 Not sure what you mean. The pattern is being looped. It's 8 bars, and I was just looping it.

  • yo dig nice bro ...send me that sample...

  • Ahh man, you just inspired me to get back to work! I know a lot of dudes that produce tracks for various artist, and never have they ever shared in depth knowledge on sample chopping and techniques like yo did in this video, nor do they want to even learn how to use Reasons. I salute you dude. Thanks again

  • Bro just taught me more about making hip hop beats in 10 min than I learned in the past year

  • Thanks for this vids, Godsuhn. They help a lot. But I have a question regarding taking the sample from Recycle to Reason. Assuming you're using a midi controller (I'm using an MPD32) how did you map out each chop of the sample to a trigger pad?

By the way, your remix of "Dolly My Baby" goes down as one of the illest in hip-hop history.

  • @Superbizzee It automatically maps out the pads starting from pad 1 all the way to 16 in order from the first chop the last.

  • ill beat

  • its not saving my slices

  • how do u make a chop keep going...?

  • lmaoooo 8:23 "holla at me nigga, ill send u this file"

    HE BE FRONTIN

  • Very nice of you to share this man. Actually learned a decent amount. If anyone wants to create and share some random sloppy rex files let me know. Could be hilarious/awesome.

  • i have a question.. i noticed that when you played the original sample it had the drums on there ... whenever i do this it always sounds off tempo... it throws my tempo way off.. i know its all in how you chop... how do you make it so its not off?? do you make sure your chops starts with the bass or kick and ends with a snare?

Also, How do you know what BPM to use for your beat?

  • Great video!

  • thanks for the knowledge.

  • thanks for thknowledge it helped out a whole lot.

  • Good vids son.

  • yo can you send me a copy cutty beats72@yahoo.com

  • can you send me a copy of that rex file

  • very smooth flavor really like it im digging it my brother can you send me that rex file i wanna send you some files to this is ya boy cutty beats from new orleans holla

  • 1st off this dude j-west got a lot of swag much respect on taking your time with this tutorial & showing us a piece of your magic

  • can you send me the rex file plz plz plz and wat ever i come up wit i will post it plz and thanks rashawn.mclean@gmail.com

  • This helped me out a little. But I will have to go back and learn more about Reason and Recycle. Just the basics.

  • how do i change the tempo

  • Thanks heaps for posting these videos man, huge help for beginners like myself.

Just one question, I have the sample chopped and opened it with the NN-XT and am using a MPK25 controller but was wondering if there's any way to get the pads or keys to trigger the whole sample when pressed cos at the moment i hafta hold down the key to play the whole sample through. Like is that a setting on the MPK or in the NN-XT?

    Peace.

  • @ohallazdawg Did you ever find out the answer to this question? I'm having the same problem.

  • @MrTBumps I just used Dr Rex instead to load the sample then moved the release slider to full and then put the polyphony to 1 and it works sweet.

  • I Appreciate The knowledge, and nice lyrics : ) do you think u can send me this Sample? I Def. Want it :)

  • is that freddie fox aka bumpy knuckles spittin?

  • ill tutorial man. i been using reason / recycle for almost a year and a half now and i still learned a lot. just nice to see other peoples techniques.

question though... say ithere is a specific chop i have and the BPM in recycle is 100. is there a way to bring it in to reason and time stretch it to say 4 bars at 85 BPM? any input would be appreciated. and send me that rex file mayne! ahaha

  • are you the one rapping also?

  • Bredren, I would like to thank you for droppin some essential science. Your video was intelligent, entertaining, and educational. Just wanted to make a sincere effort to show thanks.

    Respect

  • this shit is FIIRE !! thx 4 the video ! i'm gonna try to improve myself on sampling...

  • amazing!

  • dope!

  • nice video, that is an awesome sounding track you have there!

  • Nice.. i like it, i use the same set up + mpc 5000, and protools, and the mpk49.. Props My man..

  • Very talented!! Awesome layering of sounds and cool vocals on the final version.

So the function of NN-XT on this track was as a midi sequencer - ie. you drew in the notes on the piano roll / midi editor and it used the corresponding slices from the rex file? How did NN-XT know to which keys to map which slices or does it just start with, say, c4 and map contiguously until it runs out of slices? Will it map a slice across a pitch range?

  • I didn't receive my Recycle 2.1 yet. It suppose to be deliver today. I just wanna know when i download recycle. I wanna sample some cd's i have. I have a a macbook. Please anyone could give me some advice. Peace

  • cool vid really helpful but how did you find your tempo after playing your chops into your own melody?

  • good question ..

did you find a answere ??

  • if you have 8 bars, type in 8 bars on ReCycle and it will come up with tempo. Or if you wanna keep the same sound but make it faster without making the sample sound higher/lower, just time stretch it

  • @ShaneJones89

how do i timestretch the sample ??

  • Dude this is a Great Fu*Kin Video i chop that same sample a year ago and it didn't come out good as your, keep up that good work and yes i just subscribe to you vids good work peace.

  • i need help with doing the actual beat. im not sure if its better using the mpd or 'clicking' it into redrum, if i click it in the beats the same through out the whole song. its more than likely my lack of experience, but if someone could please make a depthfull video of the actual beats in reason it would make my life much better haha :D

  • Bling Bling! Who's That with SuperCat!! Dope Stuff Homie!!

  • great work!! thanks man.

  • yeah this taught me something and i do want those rex files..

  • Thank you man !! Big Up

  • This is by far one of the better Reason videos

  • Hell yeah that beat is tuff...took the words outta my mouth...

  • That beat is tuff!

  • thx...can u make a tut about time streching and resample? i maen i got f.x an pld soul tune, where is a nice melo but there s no part without drums on that melo. and i got 91 bpm hiphop beat but after i chop the sample on the f.x hihat,,it doesnt fit on m< 91 bpm beat...so what can i do to bring it in time...soryy for my bad english..hope u what i maen^^...i try it with wavelab...but it doesent work for me....

  • me????? i got 4

  • yo i really learned alot about choping wit ur video's im still trying to really get the hang of incorporating what i learned into my beats but when i get something im holla at u 4 ur opinion

    another strong post good looks

  • Yo Godsuhn good video. I love the sample u used and how the song came out. Looking forward to part 4!

  • ok i have a couple of questions i hope u can help me out...

how long does a sample has to be in order to be chopped?

(i found this song and the sample seems kinda short)

once u chopped it and imported it into reason, u can play the sample using the keyboard?

(i have a lil midi controller)

so far those are my questions i hope u can answer them....

  • Basically the sample can be any length, and yes it will play on the keyboard once you import the REX file into lets say, the NN-XT. THX for watching!

  • @Godsuhn i appreciate it man.....

imma try to work on it, im just getting started with reason and recycle so i just have basic knowledge on both programs....

  • @Godsuhn ill tutorial man. i been using reason / recycle for almost a year and a half now and i still learned a lot. just nice to see other peoples techniques.

question though... say ithere is a specific chop i have and the BPM in recycle is 100. is there a way to bring it in to reason and time stretch it to say 4 bars at 85 BPM? any input would be appreciated. and send me that rex file mayne! ahaha

  • @Godsuhn so you need a midi to play the sample? it can't play on it's own?

  • video is dope! my only question is how do you go about setting your tempo. my hardest part with sample beats is getting my chops to line up to the tempo i set. even with quantize on it never feels right for me. any suggestions? thanks!

  • how do you get ur samples to open on reason?

every time i try it says reason dosent support the files. if u can help me out, please do.

  • If they are wave files you can open then in NNXT, NN19, or Redrum. You just have to load them in as individual samples. OR you can convert them into rex files via Recycle, and then load them as patches into the NN19, NNXT, or Dr. Rex. To load them as waves into the Redrum is simple, but for the nnxt and nn19 you have to open the parameters by clicking on the tiny arrow on the bottom left and then you will see where you can load samples, but then you have to assign the zones. hope this helped.

  • what reason version do you have?

  • Reason, not ReasonS....you keep adding an

"S" on the end of the title. As you can see, the bars you add in Recycle does matter, because it affects the tempo and playback of the sample once it's thrown into Reason.

  • Firstly, I dont give a fuck if its Reason or Reasons. What I call it has nothing to do with what I use it for. Second, I have made literally over 1000 tracks using rex files I made, and I never had to worry about the correctness of the bar count using Recycle. Now, if you want too LOOP a track, meaning just drag the Rex file into your session and it just locks up to your track, so you don't have to program shit, maybe then the bars will matter. They made Garageband for dudes like you.

  • Wow...I don't know what issues you have that cause you to respond so caustically. I was simply pointing something out in case you didn't know. Deal with your own insecurities on your own instead of lashing out at other people, and you'll find the world a much nicer place.

How does the fact that I pointed out the name of something to you correlate to indicating what sort of music program one should use? I tell you the name of a program, and that means I should use Garageband?

  • Sigh...Oh, and thanks for the definition of "loop," lol. I always wondered what that meant! Thank you! Now I'll swear and shit and type in CAPS SO YOU NKOW IM SERIOUS D00D!!!!1!

  • I am not trying to sell Reason 4, so what I call it is irrelevant. My videos show how sampled beats are made by PROFESSIONALS. Since Rex files were invented I never just dragged one into a session and let it lock for me. ONLY AMATEURS use simple loops. We program/chop, so all we need is the pieces. DO YOU GET IT? Hate is a disease!!! Cure yourself! The track in this vid is fiya! I made it in REASONS! and I never worried about the bar count in RECYCLE. So what are you saying?

  • Wow...you have some serious issues. Where was there one shred of hate in my post to you? I was just pointng something out...I was trying to be helpful.

I wonder about people that take innocent attempts at assistance as an attack.

I didn't say one word about your track. Thank you for clarifying what chopping is. Now that I know what that AND loop means, I can be a great producer. YAY! That was the missing ingredient. Thanks so much. I had no idea what those concepts were before you told me.

  • Where has the common decency, respect, courtesy, and love gone? I make a simple comment out of love, and the response is swearing, insults, and accusations of hate.

Oh the irony, lol. Have a nice life.

Again, thanks for the clarifications on what a loop is, and what chopping means! I'm glad that finally, after producing music for over fifteen years, I FINALLY know what those words mean. Thanks, and try (in spite of your acrid attitude) to have a nice day.

  • Dude, did I hurt your feelings? For you to think I didn't know what the program I use is properly termed, or that I didn't know when the use of that bar count comes into play is just your ignorance/arrogance. Comment out of love? You never said one thing about the music or the vid itself. Just what I did or said wrong. As for production experience, the second record I produced that was published was a track called "Come do me" by the GZA in 1988. You do the math!

  • I did do the math, and what the math says is that it's been twenty-one years since you've done anything worthwhile.

  • Listen, I know you googled me. I tell you what tho, I look forward to hearing your music and seeing your videos. You obviously have a lot to show us about making beats!

  • Nope, I didn't. Sorry to let you down.

  • You say, in your own video, that you don't know what the "bars" field in Recycle means or what it affects.

It does affect the audio of the sample, even if you are using just individual slices as audio stabs when flipping the sample. The end of the slices are affected by the number of bars, tempo, and other effect parameters such as decay, stretch, threshold, etc. in Recycle. If you don't care about every piece of sound in your creations, and are a sloppy producer, then I suppose that's fine.

  • The funny thing about this internet thing is that you never know who you are talking to. That's the thing abut anonymity. I mean, for instance, you would not know if you were talking to an AnR guy from a major record label who was interested in your music. Well, that was, until that AnR guy was treated like trash by a producer he thought was perhapse a possible future investment. Hey, you win some, you lose some. Live and learn.

  • The funny thing about this internet thing is also, sometimes people think other people give a shit about what they think. And as for that insulting future investment shit......spoken like a true vampire. Happy...A&R ing You......hip hop expert!!!

  • I only thought you cared because you continue responding to my responses. It's obvious that you do care that you opinion gets across to me.

In any case, you win, you're right, you can have the last word.

By the way, just because YOU say a beat is fire, does not make it so.

1 - You are ignorant enough to only know one language. At least learn to speak and write that one correctly.

  • 2 - Learning to listen and try to communicate in a non-aggresive, ignorant manner is a key to maturity. You obviously have a lot of growing to do.

3 - When did I say I was a hip-hop expert? You are clearly delusional.

Have a nice life, or, as nice a life as you can living in such an ignorant, angry state.

  • Ramatheson your a hata Shut the fuck up!

  • Fail rama, just have fun in life man, who gives a fuk whos the expert or not, Hes teaching us a little bit about sampling, and it has helped us. This is what sampling basically is. chooping, having fun. Fuk u :)

  • The inception of hip hop = loops and yes it has evolved and has come to a point where a lot of cats are trying to chop. But let's not forget what you said about how you where introduced to chopping, which means since you where introduce you must have been looping prior to that correct? Why down play looping and say it's for amateurs you where once an amateur and did not start off chopping.

  • OK, its not for Amatuers, it's for beginners. Talking about looping. Sometimes I find a 4 or 8 bar loop thats hot the way it is, I still chop it to make the programming more precise when you add kiks and snrs even though it's still technically a loop.

  • aww boo hoo. A looper who was offended by cold hard facts. Looping is for amatuers and beginners. Your not going to get anything original strictly using loops. mixing loops and samples with midi...now your cooking.

straight loopers are beginners and amatuers though, hate to break it to you.

so maybe lay off godsuhn, hes doing good work here, and teaching the masses.

  • educate yourself...before picking apart someones logic.

  • Listen up subordinate.Step your ranks up before you speak. I love Canadian bacon , BTW are you French Canadian ? ay

  • dude your an idiot. we're done here.

  • @JerkCough1 Looping over a beat is novice. To take a sample and incorporate into ur production is different, in my opinion.. Its all in the technique.. To take a sample minimize it and add ur own synths, drums, and instruments, in surely honorable.. just commenting..

  • that FYAH son!!

  • Jesse West & Bumpy Knuckles need to make a album together...

  • nice work fam. that's that dude right there Freddie FoXXX

  • u did great shit with that loop. how did u mack that drum roll in there.

  • HANDS DOWN DOPE
