My sister is really into the exotic pet thing. I went with her to a few conventions and from what I can tell just about everyone in this hobby has the mentality of "I'm an expert, I can handle this animal, you aren't so don't get one!" They just order some animal off the internet then keep it in a cage until it gets too big and then try to donate it to a zoo. It's a pretty lame deal for the animals who spend their life in some little house than the wild or a zoo (better than a house at least).

@italia10588: different species of otters make different noises. The loud squeaky ones you're probably thinking of are Asian Small-claw otters (aonyx cinerea). The ones in this video are American River Otters (Lontra canadensis).

I met an Amazon Giant otter in Guyana, who when 'Hah!' when she was surprised to see me, and made a very loud mewing/screaming noise when excited or wanted attention, and a sort of purring when she was pleased - nothing like either of the two species I mention above.

If you´ve stumbled across abandoned otter pups you must contact the nearest animal emergency unit in your area immediately. Even if the intentions where good it is prohibited by law to keep and tend to abandoned/injured wild animals without any signed allowance, for their own best.

ve had them for 8 years, not likely, and it's not prohibited by law out on the country and in small towns, my neighbor is a cop in this small town and him and his family bbq with us occasionally, we are always finding abandoned young or whatnot and raising them or people around. We dont have animal shelters, the closest would be over 500 miles away. this is country life.

You can´t determine the law by what one police officer says, who is also your friend on top of that. I understand the good intentions and efforts behind why you are tending to the otters, but if you do not have any papers that allows you by law to take care of these otters, it is still very much illegal. The only happy otter is a free otter, no matter even if their "cage" is kilometres in size. And if you would contact an animal emergency unit they would come eventually to pick ém up.

What I would say is that there can be 'cliques' within any group of Animal owners/breeders, who will do thier upmost to keep the animals within a select few - none more so than certain dog breeders/showinf kennels. The point to be considered here, is that while this may be the case, there are Animals that do require a lot of expertise, space, time and funding to keep. So long as someone has that, then I do not see a problem.
