I'm Black and also like Country Music. Favorites are Marty Robbins,Waylon Jennings,Hank Williams Sr,Patsy Cline,Johnny Cash,Merle Haggard,Alabama,Don Williams, and Others of what is called Old School. It is important to remember that older Country had more of it's roots from Gospel,Ballad,Blues, and Folk Harmony. More spirit and soul in it than the 1980s to Present called Country.
thank you thank you thank you. i've loved this song from the first time i heard it and to see them having such a good time with it makes it that much better!
Don't you miss the days when singing was reserved to, well... people who could actually sing ??? I certainly do. Thanks for posting this, the Pointers are true vocal legends.
It was a privilege in time period to live experiencing the countless variety of excellent music whether country, rock, rock & roll, classic rock, jazz, dance, soul, funk, folk, southern rock, blues, classical, progressive, latin, you name the style of music from the 1920s to 1980s. It was the best music in world history.
I heard this on the car radio on the way to work in 1974. When I arrived at work (a radio station, and not the one I'd been listening to!) I told the program director that the Pointer Sisters had released a country tune. He laughed right in my face.
Later, I found the single in a batch of 45s that had arrived earlier that day, and was the the first jock to play it. This was the beginning of my love affair with the Pointer Sisters.
i've been a country fan all my life, never new the pointer sisters cracked country wide open in 1975! i've been a fan of theirs since the 80s...wow what a discovery! thanks for posting! ps i always new country wasn't only rednecks and republicans!
I can remember when they won the Grammy Award in 1975 for Best Country Performance by a duo or group !! From Gospel, to country, to disco/pop, The Pointer Sisters have definitely made an impact on our music !!! Thank you girls !!! ELVIS also did a cover of this song!!
I lost my mind when I found this gem on youtube. I think you really gain an appreciation for how eclectic the incredible Pointer Sisters were and still are. I can't remember any other musical group who could change musical genres so effortless. Then or now without sounding overly rehearsed. RIP June...Thanks for the post.
1975 Senior trip. Six Flags over Texas. Saw the Pointers that day sing this song. Spent many a quarter in a jukebox after that listening to this song. My alltime favorite.
The Pointers were and are a class act. If my memory serves me correctly they are the only African American group to not only have country hits but they are also the only one to win Country music awards as well. I believe they were proud to have had Elvis record one of their songs.
In 1975, The Pointer Sisters won their first Grammy Award (in the Country Music category) for this song. The Pointer Sisters could do it all - and brilliantly, too.
i have been looking for this song everywhere didnt know what it was called til i found lyric finder and it told me man i love this song so true down to everyword
geez ima maori boy from good ol new zealand and havent heard this song since i was at school and man listen to that bewtiful harmony noone will eva do this better im goin to see them next week on the 27th o feb 2010 at kings park in perth western australia awesome anita whoa yeah country at its best not many people new they also did country as well go girls
I can listen to this over and over and over and never get tired of it.This just goes to prove that good music is good music. Don't matter if it's country, gospel, rock and roll or disco. And the color of the performer matters none in the least. I'll keep enjoying this as long as I live!
@moms78vette It doesn't matter what color you are to enjoy good music. As I recall, the Pointer Sisters received a Country Music Award for this song - not R & B. I loved the Pointer Sisters of the 70"s when they sang many jazz arrangements. Try listening to "Old Songs."
The story about the good ole boy at the Opry IS true, as confirmed by the beautiful Ruth Pointer in an interview. SEVERAL folks reacted like that, when the sisters made their history making appearance. Ruth says that it was not mean spirited at all: just genuine suprise, on the part of many in the audience. Apparently they were also cheered on, like nobody's business!!!
Kinda like Charlie Pride standing in front of the mic at the Ryman and saying, "Look, I know yall are shocked at seeing me up here with this permanent suntan".....that, by the way, is true also!
I read somewhere that one of the Pointer Sisters described their appearance at the Grand Old Opry. When they started singing "Fairy Tale", a guy in the audience yelled out, "Those girls are black!" Apparently he had heard the song on the radio but had no idea they were a black group. Too funny, hope it's a true story. Thanks for posting this clip.
I recall a similar story- and I hope it's true too. This is a great song. Long a great favorite of mine, and my special favorite of all that the Pointer Sisters did!
They were the first (and I think the only) black female group to win a Country Music Award......in 1975. I listened, and listened, and listened to this song when I was a sophomore in High School!
The local radio station would play this song every morning @ 7:30am thru the week for 2 months when I was in High school. And at 15 yrs old , I bought everything they had on vinyl. WAY before they went disco....lol Good stuff....
In later years, there were only 3 but back in 75, there were 4....Bonnie, Anita, Ruth, and I think the fourth was named Nell?...I may be wrong on that!
@MultiBaldEagle Anita, Bonnie, Ruth & June-Gospel singers, country in 75, disco/pop divas in the 80's, still on the road doing their thing. GOD bless You girls.
I was 7 or 8 when this came out. I remember riding in my Mom's car near Macon, Ga. hearing this song and loving it. Even then I thought it was cool to hear Black women singing on a country station.
Thanks so much for posting this great vid. I've always thought the P/S were a versatile group. It does me proud to see Oaktown girls doing it and doing it well. Thanks again!
well secretbilly, I gonna havta agree with you ... this shornuff is my favrit ole country song. Anita is a mighty fine lady an' she sangs real purty. (thanks Dazzle Man)
Wow!!Bravo !! now that is a country song not only won a grammy as (safari creation) said, but might be the best country song ever. Now I was born in Memphis and never put someone over Elvis his covers. But these ladies walked ito Nashville and knocked it out !
