  • thanks for this - very useful video!

  • The pro sounds much much cleaner. That +20db did best

  • I used your settings for my pakistan music video. FANTASTIC!! Thank you very much. All the way from pakistan.

  • please some tutorial how to download Magic Lantern safety??? THX

There is thousands of people who wants to do that but are afraid...

  • Keep up the good work! Any ideas what the VMP setting should be the capture car audio noises?

  • wow..much less noise with +20db

  • Great review of the products. It helped me make up my mind to my hearing. I'll be buying the Pro due to size, design, function, form and quality. Thanks!

  • does the t2i have sound control like you're saying the 5d has?

  • Awesome! Hats off to the pro but I'm thoroughly impressed with the standard version. Im going to be picking up the pro version! Thanks man great video!

  • You would think for that price they might add a coil cord and make it look like it isn't a cheap pair of head phones from the dollar store.

  • I was closing my eyes to concentrate on the audio quality and at @3:17 I had to go get a change.

  • would you recommend using the Rode mics with a Zoom H1

  • @Isle0fRed Yes you can no problem at all. You have to remember that the zoom h1 is not a top of the line recorder but can still do a very good job.

  • Ordering this today for my Canon 600D :)

  • will it work with a panasonic dvx100a?

  • im newbie using dlsr recording video with 60D can choose me which rode is better? pls thx

  • Oh my. Well that does make a large difference, doesn't it? Methinks I need this...

  • Odd , but the older Rode actually sounds better in this test. Perhaps because you turned down the Canon 5D and so the sound was altered.

    Thank you

  • Hi, Thanks for all the video reviews. I have Panasonic SD90. I wanna record an interview keeping the mic 10ft away. also I would like to record some music performance at home with good bass. Which mic would be good? I would spend $150-$200 I would be grateful for any answer please.

  • @HHRNSMedia try the zoom h1 or zoom h2 both good mics. although i wouldn't recommend you record audio that far away as it won't be that great. try putting a lav mic on your subject and then it will be much better. Go to fstoppers com as they have an audio tutorial today.

  • @carlp778 many thanks :)

  • 3:17 i fucking jumped out of my chair cuz i had headphones on and max. vol. xDD

  • @boristrap sorry dude.

  • @carlp778

    its not your fault^^

but after you video i will buy definately a videomic pro.

  • Thanks for that man. Almost bought the older model.

  • sometimes i stumble on counting to ten aswell

  • the t3i/600d it does have manual audio controls, I have one..

  • HI can anyone of you help me? I bought pro for my 600D, thinking it will reduce the sizzling noise in the back ground, but when i connected to my dslr, the mic works fine except that annoying noise still projects. Im not sure its the problem with the mic or the dslr but any suggestions? The HISS IS SO LOUD

  • @MrJ9210 Not sure what it could be but I think the 600D does NOT have manual control over the audio. If not, then the internal preamp of the camera is the likely cause of the hiss. The mic is great when used with cameras where you can adjust the audio like the 5d Mark II, 60D etc.

    Hope that helps.

  • @carlp778 it has! One of the changes between the 550D and the 600D is the manual controls for audio!

  • @carlp778 Yo can adjust sound in the 600D.

  • @carlp778 the 600d DOES have manual control for the audio! the 550d doesn't!

  • @carlp778 just need to download magic lantern and you get all the manual audio controls you will ever want

  • @MrJ9210 I have this same problem!! Did you ever manage to find a solution??

  • @hayman21 yes! if you have an imovie 11, you could just click the video clip, go to audio setting and reduce background noise to 60% and change the equalizer to loudness

  • @MrJ9210 its because you cant adjust the settings manually on the 600d. Its the AGC that causes the hiss in the background and a way to get rid of this on the 600d is to download the Magic Lantern firmware update which allows you to turn of the AGC and consequently get rid of the hiss. Magic lantern has many different features and will turn your pretty good DSLR Video Camera (photo first) into a fantastic Video Camera which also takes photos :)

  • @JS110929 yeah i downloaded it on 600d but i guess the magic lantern company THOUGHT 600d could be manually control the AGC so they didnt input the setting in to their software which is pretty stupid bc for 550d, they did it and now for 600d, they didnt.

  • @MrJ9210 I believe that Magic Lantern, a third-party firmware is what you're looking fore. Now, I will warn you that it isn't exactly for people who won't know what they're doing. So, if you're fairly new to the DSLR game, then stay away for a bit, until your knowledge is extensive. But if you're experienced, you can use ML to turn down the preamp on the camera and have the Rode's preamp kick in instead. That way, you can set it to 20+, and have a good signal:noise ratio. Hope this helped! ^_^

  • @MrJ9210 You need to turn off the AGC or auto gain control :)

  • @MrJ9210 My 600D or t3i does have the manual control for audio. It allows you to change the audio level.

  • The video mic pro sounds magnificent. I have a canon 60d. you can manually adjust the audio with that. will definitely be buying a pro.

  • How do you turn the audio down in the audio settings on the 7D?

  • @OutburstStudios I don't own a 7D so not sure but if it is the same as the 5d go the the movie settings menu and a 'manual' section should appear. turn it down there.

  • @OutburstStudios you can't control it manually.

  • A lot less hiss with the pro

  • I need help, I've got a rode mic stereo, im making a low budget film, and im getting a small hiss in post. So i'm goin to by a directional mic, and been looking at the ME66+XLR adapter, MKE400, rodepro but dont know which one has no hiss. People say its about the preamp, im using hv20. Whats best mic and what are preamps?

  • @nigel101 I'm no expert but how are you recording the audio? Is the mic connected to your camera or are you recording seperate sound?

For best sound go for separate recording and don't plug the audio into your camera at all. ot is the cameras preamp that is causing the hiss.

It is very easy to sync up sound in post production. Record basic sound with your camera using a seperate mic like a rode and sync up in post. Make sure you use a clap before each take so help sync audio.

    Hope that helps.

  • Audio was much lower when you used pro with +20 compared to Rode Videomic. But there wasn't so much Boost sound when you clapped when you used Pro. I got the Rode Videomic but I am considering buying the pro for my 550d. The old Rode Videomic on my dlsr looks silly and it's so big.

  • @Scortech Saw your comment and was wondering if you have gotten the pro for 550D. I'm wondering what microphone i should get. Rode has a very good reputation for video microphones. If you have, is it any good on the 550D?

  • That was a really helpful video! I wasn't sure which mic to get but that was quite clear as to the avantages and disadvantages with each.

    Cheers

  • If anybody is interested, I did a test with the Videomic Pro in the Zoom H2.

  • The benefit to the +20 output is, given the same source, the Pro will output a 20dB-louder signal than the non-pro. Most of the noise (or hiss) you hear is the 5D2's microphone preamps. With the pro at +20, you need less gain out of the 5d2's preamp to get the same source volume, which means less hiss. However, you need to setup your levels properly beforehand so that the source volumes are the same. ;)

  • both mics sound very similar. hard to compare at diff. volumes! Im happy with my Rode old version, since I always do audio mastering. In combi with magic lantern (AGC off), I get very nice sound. the noise of the canon can be killed with a slightly audio-denoising in post production. no need for the new mic, since its expensive.

btw: in the off: I shot the same picture of that buddha in Ayuttaya!!! :)

  • you turned the voulme down to much on the pro, also why did i hear static on both?, is there a plus 5 or 10db setting?

  • Great info! I think i'll be getting the Pro for my 600D

  • @Cybersnik Before you do check that the 600D has manual audio settings otherwise you will be wasting your money. The mic only works like in the test if you can set the audio to manual. If it ONLY has automatic gain control (AGC) then the camera will adjust the audio up and down and you will not benefit from the +20db settings

  • @carlp778 u can instal magic lantern and there is manual audio control ;)

  • @carlp778 That was very well put. If you look at this video I did over at vimeo I upped the levels on the old mic vimeo (dot) com/19386240 and the lack of hiss is very clear on the new videomic pro.

  • Bought one for my 60D and it's randomly recording a loud " static " sound making it unusable. I've tried with the camera audio set low and the -10, 0 and +20db settings and the problem remains. Am not touching the cable and have tried inside, outside and the problem seems intermittant. Anyone else had this problem or did I just get a bad copy ?

  • How do you change the audio settings on the 5d?

  • @BlackToastTunes go to the menu options under the video section and the manual audio settings are there. I'm guessing you have installed the latest firmware update. You'll need to do that - otherwise you will not have the manual audio option.

  • @carlp778 is it the same with the t2i?

  • would it be better to use Black Electrical Tape all arounde that weak cable ? (Pro)

just to have an insurance :P

  • great video thanks!

  • I personally don't see a difference. Check out my videos I shoot with a canon hfm30 and a rode videomic. My audio sounds perfect. Its not worth the money to upgrade. Rode also didn't make this one right, its cheap and the cable is absolute crap.

  • Just purchased one and can verify that the cable is the cheapest in quality that I have ever seen especially in a product at this price from a company with a good reputation.

How thin and cheap is the cable?

Think dollar store earbuds cheap, but somehow even cheaper!

10 year warranty sure but then I have to pay for shipping and wait however long it takes to get back.

I am not impressed with this obviously overlooked cable.

I would have paid the extra costs for a more quality cable.

  • Whoa, the floor-level hiss and roar goes WAY down for the Pro version.

    Thanks for the test :)

  • Will you be able to use this just plugged to a Computers Audio Jack port?

Because the plug seems compatible with it.

    Please REPlY!

  • @MicroHelper I've never tried it so can't be totally sure but I don't see why it would'n't work if the computer has the right jack. I use external mics on my computer just never tried it with the rode.

  • i just got the rode videomic for my canon vixia hfs200 and the audio has noise/hissing. please help me!!!

  • @JKIProductionz You need to turn your mic level down. I have the hf m30 and my level is at 30. Try it.

  • The 20db boost really keeps the noise down. It's a no brainer the pro is smaller and better sounding at a slightly higher price.

  • Why is the cable on the pro so thin and cheap?

  • @charvelgtrs No idea. Have to ask Rode that but you're right it is just waiting to break. They do have a 10 year guarantee so hopefully that will be covered if it breaks.

  • hey thanks great comparison, great voice and certainly not an ugly head lol.

specs wise on their website they're identical but maybe that +20db Rode tip helps because the Rode Videomic Pro does sound better here and more like dialog should with a mono shotgun, I found the Original Rode Videomic to be a little bit bassy.

Did you get the Dead Kitten VMP furry included ?

  • @musicforindies thanks for your comment. Yes the dead cat is included but you have to register online and they post it to you.

  • @musicforindies the bad news is that the t2i doesn't have manual audio controls so you have to rely on the inbuilt gain in the camera which isn't that great. the good news is that if you got to a site called magic lantern you can download some software to make you t2i have manual audio.

  • Yep, I definitely want the VMP. I think the 20+ db test settles it, but I would recommend turning up the aufi

  • ...turning up the audio gain just a bit on the camera. Thanks for the video comparison! (Sorry for the fatfingering on my mobile)

  • wow! i want the videomic pro now! can i ask though, how did you change the settings on your canon? i have the t2i and cannot find an option for audio other than to use the internal mic or not. thank you for this video! :D

  • @joemaijinni the bad news is that the t2i doesn't have manual audio controls so you have to rely on the inbuilt gain in the camera which isn't that great. the good news is that if you got to a site called magic lantern you can download some software to make you t2i have manual audio.

  • @joemaijinni Try to install "Magic Latern". There you can find, some audio options and other cool things.

  • @joemaijinni you might want to try and download the Magiclantern firmware on your camera that has a bunch of audio settings as well...

  • @lulululu121212 how do u do that?
