Patti is the mother of punk. I bow to her. She blew my head when I was a teen, made me see what was possible for women instead of being pretty and nice. To see her with Sarah is incredible. I wish they'd played the Olympic ceremony together.
Shoulda backed Sarah on this one Patti. You didn't do your song any service. Sometimes songwriters are great because of songwriting, not performance. Loved your first release of this years ago, and good effort here but sorry, time has not been kind to your vocal range
the song was written and recorded by springsteen for darkness on the edge of town and rejected two months before smith had even heard it,when smith heard the song she asked sprigsteen if she could change some lyrics to suit a womans perspective, hence the smith credit for co writing.there was no writing session between them.
Natalie Merchant of 10,000Maniacs sang this song too and included it in one of their albums. It would have been a lot better if Sarah sang this with Natalie. Patti looked freaky on stage.
@ RoMMeL516 : You shouldn't care how someone looks on stage - you should care how they sing, how they perform. This is Patti's song - and if Patti decides to sing this song when she's 80, then she's entitled to do so - and then it's still not important how she looks like - it's only important what she does with this song. She's performing it like no one else ever could. And-no matter if she looks "freaky" as you say or not - she's always the best to sing this song. To live it.
Bruce springsteen was rehearsing the song and Patti heard it,she asked bruct to change some lyrics to a womans perspective, the melody/song was already written and because of some word changes Patti gets a credit,I'd hardly say that's co written
sometimes its better just a few words to express a whole hurricane of feelings and sensations, translate it,a godess touching a song of a human........
I hate to say it, but the 10,000 Maniacs (MTV Unplugged) version is still my favorite. Wikipedia says that Bruce's version originally had a Latin rhythm, but I've never heard it recorded that way. It would be interesting to hear, though.

She was hitting all kinds of bad notes. She should have let Sarah sing it, too.

Yeah actually Bruce and Patti co-wrote together in 1977-78. Each of them changing a lyric or two.
