The only logic i can make is that the gears and come together so quickly that there is some sort of bouncing of the gears or something like that. Or that yes, it is the traction control.. maybe coming in switching on and off the throttle extremely quick to not lose traction when the driver pushes the acceleration pedal down hard when the next gear is engaged.. coz the revs will go down a bit when they shift.. but even still it wouldnt be that much of a gap.. coz the gear change is almost instant
Why does the gearbox make that high-pitched wobbly kind of noise when the gears are re-engaged?.. almost like the revs are struggling at the first instance of the gears coming back together..
@houro19 I think I know what you're talking about. But I've noticed that I only hear this noise on cars with traction control [pre-'08]. Have you heard this noise that you're talking about coming from an '08 or later car?
@houro19 I have wondered slash do wonder the same thing. I'm thinking that it must be something to do with the TC, but I can't really imagine what relation there could be between the gearchanges & the TC. ??? If only I had Steve Matchett's cell number.
@ lamestnicknameever dude if you didn't pay attention let me fill you in the German guy said how it works the rest is the racing teams secret. because each one is different from team to team. So they wouldn't want to be giving up their winning secrets, would they? idiot....
This video did NOT explain jack. Its all electronic. Its expensive. Its more guessing then actual science. The only scientific part is the gear ratio numbers, which there is no detailed mention of.
Here.s a solution for making a gearbox last longer or make it last 4 races. Downshift.
That is no driving with the paddles. Back in the days, they had to use the clutch and manual transmission, that was fun watching the races. Not today.
@tucsondog I believe that current CVTs are a bit too chunky and and just can't handle such rotational speeds and torques. I.e. strength/weight ratio doesn't meet F1 demands.
@Fuzzyfull thanks for the reply. i did some more looking around, turns out they're banned. one team tried them and dominated by seconds a lap. they worked a little too well haha. perhaps one day we'll they'll allow a year with no restrictions. Turbos, cvt's, wheel fairings, fan-induced downforce (chaparel 2j), adjustable aero parts... that would be one ell of a race to watch.
@Fuzzyfull Both you and Tuscondog are wrong. CVT works fine. But FIA rules say a car HAS to have at least 3 gears and no more than 7. A CVT has no gears, therefor, it's not allowed.
Type this in the YouTube bar: Williams FW15C CVT . You can see the Williams FW15 with CVT, tested by Coulthard. Eventually, Williams built a VERY fast car, but alas....the rules say you MUST have gears and a CVT doesn't have any. Two systems are used, one for each rear wheel. It's just strong enough for one race.
What an idiot that 007bondspy is. They have done numerous tests and proved that you have a way higher advantage in a f1 gearbox then you do in a manual
@IxRunxBKs This means: today's semi-auto gearbox is much much more reliable than in the past, where "stucking" on one gear could - not rarely - happen.
It's a discussion like "Pistol or revolver? Which one do you prefer/is more reliable/etc?".
@Slashbag69 YouTube is a public forum, open to users of all ages, please consider using alternative (less aggressive and vulgar) language to make your point. @Slashbag69 "I don't behave like that in public". Well, YouTube is a public place I'm afraid. @007bondspy F1 is the technical leader of the whole motor industry. Todays F1 technology is tomorrows family car. Without F1 technology where would the modern Rally car be.
i dont understand how a clutch paddle/button works. do drivers still need to 'pendulum' the clutch and throttle together? how do they balance them? how can u have a BUTTON or PADDLE for teh clutch, how to u figure out the engage point and gas to leave off? it seems like it would be 100% clutch ON or OFF and no inbetween if u knwo what i mean, how do they not just launch every time when using it?
I also only use the clutch to start and to stop , gear changing happens without .
Just pressing buttons and the electronics control the hydraulics in the gearbox to change gear. This changes in a fraction of a second. 3 groups of 6 gears to play with :D Just floor the throttle and press the button for gear up as soon as the rpm gets high enough :p
Just to point out that these transmissions are not DCT (dual clutch transmission) Its a sequential gearbox with dog gears. (look at you microwave glass plate)
Instead of having a ratchet turning the gear selector you have a computer that senses when you hit the paddles to shift. The clutch is used to get the car started from a stand still, and for stopping so you don't stall. Its basically a motorcycle transmission with out the kick lever.
not talking about multiclutch, Dual clutch transmissions are managed electronically and are sequential. You can call a dog clutch transmission multiclutch because instead of syncromesh you have dog clutches. Dog clutches are made of metal like gears and have no (brake pad) like material on them. Motorcycles have 1 main clutch, and instead of sincromesh they use dog clutches.
It helps on the starts. You hold down 1 clutch all the way down and the other 1 you hold around 40%ish. Then when the lights go green you let go of the clutch you were holding all the way down and balance the power with the other clutch
@corotor12345 nnnope, driver aid's were banned for 2008 season and onwards. that included launch controll. as well as anti lock brakes, traction controll.... basicly any electronic system that could assist the driver. i think even the brake balance knob on the steering wheel was banned because most teams now have a lever behind the steering wheel, from which they adjust the brake bias.
@PulletSurprise yeah, exactly, that's what i mean. so its not necessary and irrelevant for the driver to pull the clutch paddle on upshifts adn downshifts and thus doesnt matter if theyre on teh left or right and how people were saying u had to combine opposing paddles to upshift/downshift.
The only logic i can make is that the gears and come together so quickly that there is some sort of bouncing of the gears or something like that. I'm curious as to why a CVT isn't used? It would solve a lot of problems, especially the constant loading and unloading of the drivetrain.

does that mean their clutch is not an on/off switch? the clutch must be working in an analogue fashion then...

Left paddle downshift + right clutch paddle.
Right paddle upshift + left clutch paddle.
It'd be pretty hard to engage the paddles on one side of the wheel precisely.

You do need the clutch, it's just that the computers and hydraulics in the gearbox actuate it when the car is moving instead of the driver.

@KuostA~ Sorry, the clutch is a "drive-by-wire" (electro-hydraulic/pneumatic operated) mechanism.
These gearboxes (like motorbike gearboxes) dont have synchronizers in them, like your car does, so u dont need to use the clutch when shifting.
marek0086 1 year ago
because some pits are either on the left or the right...
