@cruzitamex Yes you can use Cow's milk.  Goats milk is a favourite. It keeps its colour best if it's frozen when you add the lye to it.

@NancyToday I would come tomorrow if I could afford the plane ticket =) Me and the hubby usually travel for our anniversary, let me see if I can talk him into it!!! If we drive how many hours would it be from the border to your area? I know it would take us around 14 hours to the border. But thats ok, a two day drive isn't all that bad, and we could find us a nice Bed and Breakfast to stay overnight on the way. They are my favorite place to stay. They are all so beautiful.

Here's praying his scrooge of a boss won't deny the request. He has been pretty good about granting them, but two years ago he made us postpone for two months. I hope you like breakfast in bed, that will be my payment for the room. I love to cook, you won't have to do any at all while Im there! Any requests?

@NancyToday LOL don't know why I didn't do this earlier, just like to talk to you I think is the reason. I just google mapped it, it says 21.3 hrs door to door, no stops of course. So we will definately be doing a two day trip up and back. My hubby has put in his vacation request for last week of August, ( our Anniversary is the 29th it will be our no. 8 took me 30 years to find someone who would have me LOL) if that gets denied, 3rd week in September is the secondary choice. Cross your fingers!

In response to your querry of measurements, the pioneers (of soap making) had learned by trial and error. Once a container was found to be ideal, it was used for future measurements. On a seperate note, the earlier measurement systems were based on volumes, not weights. The strength of "lye" was based on experience and color (part of that early system of education).
