I do not understand why it is important if JW served or not? He is an ACTOR!!!!!! In movies about lawyers you would also not insist that the actors should be lawyers?? It is the quality of actors that they can play anything - heroes, villains, lovers, criminaqls, etc!!!
The talentless draft dodging coward was 34 actually. Funny how it was OK for older men like Robert Montgomery, Clark Gable, Henry Fonda and Eddie Albert to serve but not John Cancer Fuck Wayne, eh?
They enlisted, none of them were drafted. Just because John Wayne didn't serve doesn't mean he was a draft dodger, or a coward. Have you served your country in a time of war?
John Waye was good actor ,I am fan. However he never wore any U.S.military uniform for real. he was never in the military for real. many actors, ballpayers, and other celebs were.
The only thing I think I ever agreed with John Wayne on is that I too hate "High Plains Drifter"; I do not think he was a coward; but he was not a hero--or even a brave soldier--and those are themselves often two different things. That John Wayne could be regarded as an American hero shows how many Americans can be deceived by illusion and propagangda.
He never claimed to be a hero. He told the stories of heroes and talked a lot about loving your country and being a patriot. He was a role model for young americans.
Saving Private Ryan was far better because the actors were the right age. Eastwood's two films about Iwo Jima were also good, far better than Wayne's stupid version.
Ryan was in the Marines on D-day, he was 33 and a drill instructor at Pendelton . Heston was a radioman in the army on D-day, stationed in Alaska. So both men could have portrayed an officer!
John Wayne was 37 on D-day, too old for the army, plus he had bad hearing. He was too valuable for propaganda purposes and thus made a lot of pro-war effort movies during the 40s. Norman Cota was proud that they used Wayne to portray him.
How Many War heros we got running there Mouth about Wayne in here ? ..raize your hands...Oh I see none ..Damn people are a legends in there own mind and there Mommys...
For those who are calling the Duke a draft dodging coward I must point out that there are responsibilities other than those on the front lines that are required for a war such as the second world war to be won. By admitting that people are needed in positions other than the front lines (factories, farms etc.) we admit it is possible to serve your country out of uniform. For a huge star like Wayne, fame and glamour could be used to make war films to support the war effort. Propaganda.
medicboy - Let ME point out that Jimmy Stewart had no problem putting his life on the line during World War II. Funny how such a patriot like Wayne could never do in REAL life what he so bravely does on camera. Also, keep in mind this movie is painfully bad, almost unwatchable. It doesn't even get a pass for being OLD. This movie was a flop the day it was released. With an opening song by Mitch Miller, you were guaranteed to be a flap!
Actually Wayne tried to enlist but was forced by Herbert Yates' studio to receive a 2-a deferment. Yates refused to release Wayne from his contract because he was the biggest star the studio had. Most other actors who enlisted had to have approval from their respective studios. Even those that did were held out of any combat aside from a few exceptions such as Jimmy Stewart. Wayne wasn't fit enough anyway from injuries suffered doing his own stunts in the late 30's and early 40's.
the flag raising at iwo jima did it...as i recall hopefully correctly sec nav james forrestal had gone ashore and commented that the flag raising means a marine corps for another thousand years..hard to believe but many wanted to disband the corps..
In 1948 John Wayne made the film "Sands of Iwo Jima". At the time Congress was seriously thinking about doing away with the marine branch of the service. The film helped change there minds.Another Holywood cardboard actor,,,,,,,NO.

Charlton Heston was the original choice, he would have been more suitable since he was only 38, slim and in good physical health.
Robert Ryan was 52 in The Longest Day, playing 37-year-old General Gavin.
