Most schools will allow you to rent or build lofts, don't they? You've doubled your floor space right there. Go to IKEA and get a futon or desk and stick it under your loft and one of those clip on lamps to light up the area there. Get a "hanging" laundry bag from IKEA to stick in your closet and some flat plastic tubs to store your clothing in. And some modular wire cube shelves to store your books and other crap in. Voila.
