Hey I am going to be cutting some birch and I was wondering what feed rates and spindle speed you would suggest. I am going to be using a 1/8 end mill.
For birch I would use about 10 to 40 ipm with a depth of cut around 1/16in at around 25 - 30k rpm. Make a simple part to test cut and try out different feed rates/doc/rpm. There are many ways to approach cutting.....take many shallow fast cuts......take fewer deep slow cuts...or in my opinion the best way take deep (.01 over sized) cuts then come back with a final operation to trim .01 off of the edges to leave a great finish.
CamBam has an older free version although its not open source. I'm sure there is some form of software out there but I doubt it will match the overall versatility and polished look/feel of CamBam. The $150 is a small price to pay to get fantastic results quickly and easily. However if you want that homebrew/diy software aspect then my only suggestion would be to write it yourself. Its tricky but very rewarding once you get it right.
@Halo2maniaccc I want to use open source out of principal, to promote the free exchange of information.. I'm not familiar with writing my own software. What program/language do you use to do that? Could you recommend some websites to learn from? Could you do a video tutorial of how you learned to write your own programs and how you write them now? It would be much appreciated:)

Start with shallow cuts and go from there.

Hi, is there a way to generate G-code using open source software that is equally as option full as CamBam? I hear Blender could be a possibility?
