@atp7797 so was i, like i was saying the smaller bands barely lose out. 90% of people who can afford to buy music still do it either by getting the albums or buying songs individually from itunes or other online stores. If anything These websites increase exposure of smaller bands and increase their fan base which translates to higher ticket sales and album sales.
@atp7797 yeah but back then bands the smaller bands you referred to never made anything, they spent a few years playing local gigs never getting any serious exposure and eventually dispanded and the members had to get jobs.
After 12 years of this fiasco, I still stand by Metallica for their decision to take down Napster. Yes, it did give unknown bands some fame, but many bands/artists (such as Metallica) consider their art to be their work; their career.
Love Lars reaction "APOLOGIZE!?!?!?!?!" They couldn't even release they're I disappear single because everyone had already downloaded it from napster, I don't think an apology is in order at all. This asshole made them look like greedy assholes, when in fact they're probably that way because they're fans ripped all they're music.
Idiots taunt Metallica by saying "NAPSTER BAD, $ GOOD" and all that stupidity, wel if $ shouldn't B an issue than why don't U just pay for the damn music? Recording, touring, promoting,hotels, food, guitar strings&picks, amp tubes, roadies, ect, R not free smart asses. They make music, it comes from their hearts and spirits and they have a right 2 do what they want with it. It wasn't bout the $, it was bout privacy. Napster and digital downloading have kept of lot of great bands from getting a deal and or getting national attention. It ruined the music industry forever. Now you have to be famous before you get famous.
@telhacerta Actually, I am an artist, and when people tell me they came across my work, I'm stoked. The fact that people find it worth sharing tells me I'm doing something right. @ADOPTmeBITCH Oh Boohoo! You just cry cuz u can't get music free! Shut the fuck up and suck´it. You can give me all the facts you know but whatever you do, metallica will and always have ruled!

The only reason metallica is the band they are is because they grew a loyal fanbase from TAPE-TRADING. then to go and say that you shouldnt share music is blatantly hippocritical and just shows the progressive greed that surrounds this band.
It's not about the money? Are you sticking up for a guy who sold a painting in his collection for $12m, as well as calling him a man of principle? Get real! If Metallica had an ounce of dignity and respect for their craft, then they too should have pioneered a different approach; as Radiohead did with their "virtual busking" experiment, where fans could pay what they wanted from $0.01 to $99.99 for their music. I wish Metallica all the failure they deserve!
@bettySwollox What Radiohead did was fucking retarded. We live in a land of entitlement and young people are blinded by their easy access to media nowadays and think its all free. I would do the same thing if I were Metallica because they actually had the balls to stick up for their intellectual material. It does not matter if the people who downloaded their stuff bought other Metallica gear, they still STOLE. I don't get what the fucking problem is.
Why was what Radiohead did retarded? The way I see it is as follows, First, Radiohead were fully aware of the reality of the situation, concerning "young people" and their attitudes towards free, and "easy access to media". Instead of attacking their own fans, taking them to court and turning this into a legal battle, they instead got creative, and looked at the music industry as a whole, and wondered how they could bridge the level of disconnect between what it charges for a...
..CD and what customers were willing to pay for it. Protecting intellectual property is important, and I agree, anyone downloading files such as film and music without a license to do so, is doing so illegally. However, it's far more practical to change (attitudes to) a broken system, than it is to chase after hundreds of thousands if not millions of people all over the world, and threaten them with fines or jail time, and have them lose their respect for you and their patronage in the process.
As for your "we live in a land of entitlement" comment. I'd say that it may be true, but it is a two way stream. Metallica, being the owners of the intellectual property being sold on their part, are entitled to their fair share of the earnings incurred from those sales. However, I live in a country where consumes are also 'entitled' to being treated fairly, and where consumers have rights which protect them from industries behaviour which lead to consumer exploitation.
Look, as endearing as your defense of Metallica is, and even though you have made a good point about the legality of certain types of behaviour, unfortunately your argument is based largely on an appeal to emotion. It's this emotion, i.e., your dedication to the band, that is clouding your judgement, and preventing you from seeing the bigger picture, from a different perspective. You said "I would do the same thing if I were Metallica" demonstrates this perfectly well, as even...
...in hindsight, with all the information available to you about: this case; the industry; the technological developments; the different approaches to creativity demonstrated by other bands; the change in consumer attitudes; access to new purchasing channels, and all that. You would still be prepared to go down the same route that Metallica took? In my humble opinion, that would be pretty fucking dumb!
@bettySwollox I appreciate your opinion. In a couple sentences why do you exactly think Metallica went wrong suing Napster, and what do you think they should have done instead?
I've already explained what I think they could have done differently/instead. Their reaction was one of that in haste. They reacted how they saw fit, in the eyes of the law. If we look at how we get our music now, today, we actually owe it all to Shawn Fanning and his vision. Bear in mind, that he was 17 years old when he created Napster, he actually revolutionized the way in which the internet serves as the perfect interface between the artist and the fan. OK, his way was far...
...from perfect, but the foundation was solid! It's been common practice for the last two decades (at least) for computer programers or hackers to get well paid jobs within the software/hardware industry, simply because they are worth more - out of jail - to companies seeking a competitive advantage, than they are in jail where their talent is going to waste. The same goes for Shawn and Napster, if Metallica has approached him and sought a way in which they could work together..
...then both parties could have walked away with a concept that was bound to revolutionize the industry. imagine the legacy that Metallica would have left behind if they'd just been a little more adventurous, and if they'd recognized the genius of a 17 year old boy, and harnessed it and put it on the right track. instead, however, it turned into a legal battle where neither party came out trumps up. Luckily, Shawn has finally received a giant pay-day that was well deserved!
@bettySwollox But what solution could they have worked out? Agreed to do what iTunes does and make people pay for the music? Either way they would have to end up having some sort of legal action. I agree that with a little more patience they could have saved a lot of fans, and would have gone down better in the history books. Either way there is no way Metallica could allow their music to be streamed legally for free.
In addition, your "it's about the principle..." argument is bullshit. I could quite as easily say that the principle of the matter is that the Metallica fans who had "illegal" songs on their computers, were probably the same ones who bought the genuine CDs, posters, T-shirt, tickets for concerts and all the other paraphernalia associated with being a fan of a band. Anyway, if it wasn't about money, why then did the RIAA attempt to sue Napster for $20bn?
Apologize to napster?!?!?!?!? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been the biggest Metallica fan for the longest time. But I think rapidsharing is going to make bands actually work for their money! We'll pay to see you live. but were going to burn your shit. So, tour more...
I wonder what will metallica do about rapidshare, mediafire or megaupload? there's no way they can win. their music has been spread all over the world and gained millions of new fans who buy tickets for their sold out shows, so it shouldn't be as bad as lars says it is right?
dude if you have a band as big as Metallica you would want your songs to go out perfect, right?!
eh...then when you are working on a song, you haven't released it and you hear it on the radio, you are not happy...you would be frikin' mad, at least i would be.
same: if you work on a movie, and you hear your movie is being played in a theater, before it's official release...at least you must get the chance to chose the opening night...
Notice how the members are studdering left and right when asked this question. As for having that song on the radio before they were finished with it. SCREEN YOUR BACKGROUND HELP NOOBS! You had a thief in your midst and were too dumb to track down which one leaked out your unfinished song. Metallica didn't suck after Black Album. Because of thier "views" on sueing people, EVEN CHILDREN for listening to their music- METALLICA HAS ALWAYS SUCKED. FIN. Rate me up baybe!
Damn right. Dont you want to control whats yours? Especially if its your source of income? I know I do. And the dollar amount does NOT have any relevance to anything.
i think if you were a true metallica fan you shouldnt care about them selling out and sueing napster.ive been a metallica fan and im going to stay a fan no matter wat they do.its not about the people in the band its about the music.and all i know is im seening them in september and i will be looking forward to it.go ahead give a thumbs down on this but you know its true.if you support me THANK YOU send me a message
Kirk wasn't just studdering he was nervous since theband really should appoligize to their fans and music lovers in general.He opened his mouth since no one would appoligize n tried to defend the bands asshole attitude &realised what he was saying just made him sound like an ass & by that time it was too late he was lalking to millions of viewers.Funny and sad/being sad as a fan of early metallica and of tape trading that was no questioin on how they got it's major break into the music industry
Do you live in a cave? Is this your first time using a PC, and thus the first time on the internet? Napster didn't give away music for free, it simply played host to a file sharing system called Peer to Peer. Ever heard of it?
How do you figure? They may make money but less money.
And for bands who aren't millionaires or who are just starting out it really puts a stranglehold on the ways they can make money
Touring and Merch sales only go so far. I download music too but I still buy albums when I like them and attend concerts on a regular basis. People need to realize that it adds up. Just because metallica are complaining doesn't mean the little guy isn't getting hurt too
First Metallica Album I ever owned was a tape copy a friend made for me. Yes Tape, it was the late 80's. Back then, they got huge of the fact that people were making copies and then running to the shows to see them and buy the T-shirts and eventually the Albums because they were dedicated. So what the fuck is the logic now behind downloading? Same shit, new technology.
Lars still holds this illusion that Napster somehow "stole" their music, or rather control over it. But what he's missing, then and now, is that Napster was only a program to network people. So the question really is, "Who leaked the music?"
It's not like Shawn Fanning works as a spy, hell bent on infiltrating music studios. Obviously someone close to the band stole and uploaded the song, so blame them. Because if you're going to blame Napster, you need to blame the entire Internet.
uh, no, generally, files on those network torrents like limewire, napster, and such, FANS can upload the music from the cd directly into the network, doesnt necessarily have to be leaked before the release date
Obviously, but that isn't what Lars was talking about in this video. Because if you knew anything about Metallica, you'd realize that they don't care much about music piracy in general. They allowed people to tape their songs years back at concerts.
The difference here is that songs they weren't even finished with yet were appearing in public already. That's what pissed them off, genius.
nah, lars was smart, he wouldnt that going after torrents for pre-leaked files totally, thats stupid, he didnt care about the live concert thing cause they already payed for a ticket, he attacked napster because he thought it would affect future record sales
their old shit is bad ass their new shit sux ass...but wut I wuz tryin to come across wuz that they didn't want there fans listening to their music for free...so they took napster to court sued him for millions & metallicocks became the biggest sellout group ever...to me their a bunch of bitches!!!!
Napster was the good guy, the record companies are the ones who are stealing money out of the consumers pockets by selling cd`s at such an astronomical price in comparison to the cost of production.
look at these washed up poseur "musicians". james and lars remind me more of paul stanley and gene simmons now that they have truly evolved into corporate minded, sell out, mtv processed puppets and are completely full of shit.
the only people who would hate napster are the record companies who own these musicians. lars is just sucking 3-piece-suit marketeer dick.
metallica has become nothing but bullshit for the past 20 years. i much rather listen to james in '83 about fake motherfuckers
uhuhuhuhu i dont see the need to be uuuhuhuh a ahauhuh appuhuhloouhugettic uhuh on the issue uhuh. we have the same stance uhuh where we've uh uh always stood on this issue, n i dont feel theres any need to be apologetic on where we stand uhuhu stand
i dont think napster was that bad i mean sure they stole their music but some record companys let music leak to make people want to to go to the concerts or by that album.
are you kidding? illegal downloading has crippled the music industry!? You think its okay to steal music, because you wont get caught for it right? You're right, Metallica shouldn't be concerned about making sure their product isn't stolen. In the same way, gas stations shouldn't be concerned about shoplifting, cuz you know, maybe the thief was hungry right?
Next time steal a CD at the next concert you go to and see how that goes!
...and what exactly are those principles you guys believe in?..."fuck the opinion of the fans as long as we're making money off this"
i love Metallica's music (before the fuckin Black Album) but seriously, why the fuck would they care if their music is leaked and their fans are downloading it, seriously, most anyone i've ever know who download music of any kind will want to buy the album later
and even if they don't buy the album, if they don't like the album, obviously they stop downloading from that artist, and if they do like it, most of the time they make plans to get to a concert as soon as possible
most all bands make almost ALL of their money from concerts and tours now, so why give a shit how much your records are selling for, as long as your music is heard
If anyone is concered about money it's you little wanker! They never mentioned it. It's principles. You don't steal others work of art. It's disrespectfull and greedy. And it's destroying the true soul of music. It's about being real. But you fucking twats don't give a bloody toss. It's just like stealing my copying my paintings without asking for permissions. I hope you understand this someday.
YEA FUCK YOU ALL! THEY HAVE THE GOT DAMN RIGHT TO SUE STUPID ASS NAPSTER! NAPSTER SUCKS!!!! GO METALLICA! AND LARS IS GOEGEOUS! HE DONT LOOK LIKE NO SIMON PEGG LMAO
oh big deal Lars. "I Disappear" ? like that was such a horrible thing.
back in the day, if they put it on the radio without there consent, they wouldnt of cared.
its about GREED, and being self centered and stuck up, Lars. You have all the riches and fame the world offers. You have it made. And you and the band fucked up by making a fool of yourselves and showing your true colors.
You can talk legality all you want. But your "principles" used to be DEEPER than that petty shit. FUCK YOU,Lars.
You fucking wanker! Who the bloody hell is the greedy one here not willing to buy an work of art so you take it without the rights instead! It's not about money it's about t he true soul of music. They create something and the least we can do is to get a hold of their real album wether if it's cheap, expensive or even free. I don't have that much money but I can establish a stable economy buy planning on what to buy and write it down. YOU are the one who's greedy. You fucking twat!
Doubt I'll buy a CD ever again. Record were cool because of the artwork. Now it's all about the net. These guys just represent the industry's fear over losing control over distribution. Welcome to now. Control over information is an increasingly abstract concept. Good.
having had time to think about it, I can understand Metallica's point. The fans were taking control away from their music. but IM still pissed over not letting Jason record his side album
Im pissed at metallica not just because of this issue but because James wouldnt let Jason record his Echobrain record so he quit. Way to go guys (rolls eyes)
Stuck with principals. Bullshit, they became a bunch of sellout money grubbing assholes. They did a collaberation with Ja Rule for fuck sakes, rap music with fake people. It now looks like they never even had principals to begin with and all they were trying to do was appeal to the masses.
point is the record/music industry has been ripping the fans off for more than a decade. CD's came along with better sound but people were doing tapes for their friends long before Napster. Here's the thing-with cds- costs when drastically down and the price went up to $15-20. Napster (and others like napster) prove the economy does not support the price they wanted. Poeple didn't want to pay that much-boom-here is an alternative. Now "bands" think its ok to charge $100+ for a concert
I can remember about 5 or 6 years ago at my local sam goody they were charging 25 - 30 bucks a cd . even for shit people wouldn't buy like john Denver it was rediculus . now cds are around 14 or 15 bucks . still to high i bet if they sold the cds for 9 or 10 bucks a piece . people would start buying them more again . its nice to watch america fuck the man though . we are geting fucked on gas now . but we are fucking over the rich recording industry .
Lars is such a dick. He tries to talk about "standing for something", and control. He needs to be honest and just admit it's all about greed and milking everyone for everything they can.
You clearly don`t understand the concept he`s defending do you?
Would you like to work and not get paid? ofcourse you dont`t.
Metallica has spent 25 years buliding their reputation and name, dnd they have worked hard for it. Ofcourse they don`t want to give away their material.
This isn`t special to Metallica. do you think any writer, film maker, musican or poet don`t want to controll and make money of their art?
I completely understand that they're entitled to be paid for their music, and I'm not defending people who illegally download shit. I'd sooner drink my own piss than give Metallica a single dime for their overrated garbage, but anyway the point I was making is Lars needs to be fucking honest. He's trying to make this out to be some sort honor and integrity issue when we all know it's about the money.
I wasn't making fun of him. I've known a lot of people who suffer from disorders like that. I just thought it was comical, I didn't mean disrespect. A lot of people who are like kirk realize and accept that they do that, and some actually laugh at themselves. So sorry if you thought I was making fun, totally wasn't.

Only thing that sucked for me was Trujillo has always been my favorite bass player.
When he joined my friends all laughed at me (knowing how I feel about Metallica)
I understand his decision but ug.
Time has passed and I'll never buy Metallica mech ever again but if they let Randy loose (and I'm talkin FUNKY loose) I might be tempted to listen again.

Just found this while looking for some old Metallicops videos.
Metallica was made by sharing music. I haven't bought anything of theirs since Lars got on TV and said "if you're downloading our music we don't want you as fans"
I bought 3 Ride the Lightning tapes because I kept wearing them out...countless other Metallica shit.
Don't know where it is now and couldn't give a rats ass.

I would do the same thing if I were Metallica because they actually had the balls to stick up for their intellectual material. It does not matter if the people who downloaded their stuff bought other Metallica gear, they still STOLE. I don't get what the fucking problem is.
Jtmoney363636 1 year ago
@Jtmoney363636

However, it's far more practical to change (attitudes to) a broken system, than it is to chase after hundreds of thousands if not millions of people all over the world, and threaten them with fines or jail time, and have them lose their respect for you and their patronage in the process.
bettySwollox 1 year ago
@Jtmoney363636
As for your "we live in a land of entitlement" comment. I'd say that it may be true, but it is a two way stream. Metallica, being the owners of the intellectual property being sold on their part, are entitled to their fair share of the earnings incurred from those sales. However, I live in a country where consumes are also 'entitled' to being treated fairly, and where consumers have rights which protect them from industries behaviour which lead to consumer exploitation.
bettySwollox 1 year ago
@Jtmoney363636
You said "I would do the same thing if I were Metallica" demonstrates this perfectly well, as even...
bettySwollox 1 year ago
@Jtmoney363636
...in hindsight, with all the information available to you about: this case; the industry; the technological developments; the different approaches to creativity demonstrated by other bands; the change in consumer attitudes; access to new purchasing channels, and all that. You would still be prepared to go down the same route that Metallica took? In my humble opinion, that would be pretty fucking dumb!
bettySwollox 1 year ago
@bettySwollox I appreciate your opinion. In a couple sentences why do you exactly think Metallica went wrong suing Napster, and what do you think they should have done instead?
Jtmoney363636 1 year ago
@Jtmoney363636
OK, his way was far...
bettySwollox 1 year ago
@Jtmoney363636
...from perfect, but the foundation was solid! It's been common practice for the last two decades (at least) for computer programers or hackers to get well paid jobs within the software/hardware industry, simply because they are worth more - out of jail - to companies seeking a competitive advantage, than they are in jail where their talent is going to waste. The same goes for Shawn and Napster, if Metallica has approached him and sought a way in which they could work together..
bettySwollox 1 year ago
@Jtmoney363636
...then both parties could have walked away with a concept that was bound to revolutionize the industry. imagine the legacy that Metallica would have left behind if they'd just been a little more adventurous, and if they'd recognized the genius of a 17 year old boy, and harnessed it and put it on the right track. instead, however, it turned into a legal battle where neither party came out trumps up. Luckily, Shawn has finally received a giant pay-day that was well deserved!
bettySwollox 1 year ago
@bettySwollox But what solution could they have worked out? Agreed to do what iTunes does and make people pay for the music? Either way they would have to end up having some sort of legal action. I agree that with a little more patience they could have saved a lot of fans, and would have gone down better in the history books. Either way there is no way Metallica could allow their music to be streamed legally for free.
Jtmoney363636 1 year ago
@Jtmoney363636

Jaimequin 2 years ago 6
Lars still holds this illusion that Napster somehow "stole" their music, or rather control over it. But what he's missing, then and now, is that Napster was only a program to network people. So the question really is, "Who leaked the music?"
It's not like Shawn Fanning works as a spy, hell bent on infiltrating music studios. Obviously someone close to the band stole and uploaded the song, so blame them. Because if you're going to blame Napster, you need to blame the entire Internet.
graveyardpc 2 years ago
uh, no, generally, files on those network torrents like limewire, napster, and such, FANS can upload the music from the cd directly into the network, doesnt necessarily have to be leaked before the release date
spikeman27 2 years ago
Obviously, but that isn't what Lars was talking about in this video. Because if you knew anything about Metallica, you'd realize that they don't care much about music piracy in general. They allowed people to tape their songs years back at concerts.
The difference here is that songs they weren't even finished with yet were appearing in public already. That's what pissed them off, genius.
graveyardpc 2 years ago 2
nah, lars was smart, he wouldnt that going after torrents for pre-leaked files totally, thats stupid, he didnt care about the live concert thing cause they already payed for a ticket, he attacked napster because he thought it would affect future record sales

Deadperson213 3 years ago
point is the record/music industry has been ripping the fans off for more than a decade.
