Great video series, im avout to attempt doing this very soon and I plan on following all of the steps you provided. Ignore all of the people being assholes as well, seems like its just jealousy. For all the people saying "Just buy projectors", these are much more classy, its something a real car enthusiast should HAVE to do, and theres a difference between HID projectors (ONLY FROM RETRO FITTING) and Halogen projectors (EVERY projector headlight sold). If you have tips, id apreciate them.
This is a blessing, to see that at least some people don't put their HIDs in the stock reflectors. I want to do this, but alas, I do not have the tools needed. Amazing result.
dont get me wrong you did a great job but buy the time an avaerage person buys those heaters, plastic, and other bits aint it easier just to spend £90 and buy a pair, you fuck the lights up it will cost ya more then just buyin a pair to start with
hey ive been looking for hid projector headlights for my p5 and havent had any luck. how much would it cost for you to do my headlights with dual projectors?
dont get me wrong, i enjoyed watching this make, but something for your average joe to do? a compressor "seems to help" and a vaccum... something to by ready made, but excellent job
Second, and I know YOU know this, but your viewers need to be made aware that acrylic is SHARP as sharp as broken glass, and when you were removing the remants of the vac formed piece from your reflector with your BARE HANDS and it broke, my asshole puckered in hopes you didn't cut yourself badly. I worked with a diabetic hemophylliac who was drilling a piece of acrylic, it grabbed, sliced his wrist at the base of his hand and he nearly bled to death on the way to the hospital PLEASE BE CAREFUL!
Well, as a professional modelmaker of 23 yrs., I can honestly say you have some good fabrication skills kiddo! I would like to make a couple small suggestions to you. First,(and you mat be aware of this) instead of plain acrylic, there is a thermoplastic called "VIVAK" (brand name) that is made SPECIFICALLY for vac forming. the nice thing about vivak is that it is not as brittle after it is formed as acrylic. If you like using acrylic, male sure you use "SG" grade which is also for vac forming.
I watched all 4 vid. and though "Wow that might take a time!" Then I remembered that other one have to be done too. :S Too much work to my kind of men. Great Job Dude! I appreciate that kind of man!!
@dreamlove1995 thats why he went to so much effort to get a nice seal on them. shoddy jobs would defs end up with condensation. but those headlights are mint, he did an excellent job sealing them. should have no problems whatsoever.
how do you know the projectors are aimed correctly and arent just a few degrees off and pointing at the ground. Or will the lense adjust far enough no matter what?
DUde, you gotta either really REALLY love doing this, or you gettin paid because that was alot of teadious craftsmanship that required specific tools that many people don't have. But I will say, I can appreciate what your doing. Because their is nothing more aggrivating than owning a car that aftermarket companies won't make anything for. Well done sir, well done.
They took a standard halogen headlight apart, and 'retrofit' a projector lens from another vehicle(probably a BMW, Lexus, Infinity, etc.). The owner can then use them as street legal HID's(high intensity discharge lights) that some newer vehicles have from the factory. Some people do this because some aftermarket companies don't make projector headlights for their specific vehicle. It's a somewhat costly and time consuming process, but the end results speak for themselves.
@DahakaMatthew I think those of us that disliked this video are the ones that realized that in the amount of time it took this guy to make these headlights you could easily make enough money to buy REAL projectors (not just look-alikes) and still have money left over.
A lot of work is put into these headlights. Only thing that I could think that they did wrong was use silicone sealant to seal all those parts. I would have like to seen a more strong or suitable epoxy or sealant. Just look at the stuff the manufacture used for the lens, that was 100x times better than silicon caulk they used. I would think this lens would form moisture in it after little use.
nice job, i thought it was going to turn out all crappy and waste my time. but nice. can you do this to flat headlights? i have a 98 rodeo and they dont make projector head lights for them
The craftsmanship of the shroud is great, but I wouldn't be very comfortable having a heavy metal projector held in with nothing more than silicone epoxy. If this was all that was needed to ensure long term fit, then you'd see it on factory vehicles as it would save time and costs. The fact is the projector will eventually loose its position. If nothing else, a simple brace could be placed under the front end of the projector, behind the shroud. If you're gonna do it, do it right and to last.
@nivlacisapimp while watchin the vids i was thinkin the same thing... just silicone holding it in would not last in my town ... the roads suck here and are very bumpy
At first I was like "mehh, I think I'd rather work the extra day to buy them premade." then after it was complete I was like "Damn, this is badass! I would love to try this myself!!" He did an amazing JOB! Well done! Thanks for showing us.
I think everything you did was good and for those who don't think the silicone will hold without solid brackets. well think again he has the projector secure front and rear.
H8rs man all the h8rs. you should all just build your own rockets
Not sure about silicone, but you can use panel adhesive maybe to keep that projector in there. Panel adhesive is what's used in body shops and factories to "weld" steel panels together. That should be plenty strong enough to keep the projectors in there.
There most certainly is some good craftsmanship here, loved the homemade vacuum forming. I just think a step is being skipped which would provide a lifetime guarantee to these headlights. I know what I'm talking about too, I've dealt with nearly every composite structure found on an aircraft and I know that expecting anything to last for years of use under circumstances involving heavy vibration requires over engineering and strong materials. Silicone not being one of them.
