Beaucoup trop vite! La main droite doit se jouer staccato et c'est impossible dans ce tempo sur ce genre d'instruments à transmission pneumatique. Tout est confus. L'avant dernier accord se joue en appogiature et pas en note répétée. Trop dommage!
The sound of this instrument,The natural accoustics in the Cathdral and the tallent of Diane Bish is absolutely breath taking! Thank you for playing this and for sharing your tallent and the beautiful surroundings with us!
The sad part about this,or any particular piece of classic music, is I was first exposed to this played by Diane Bish on this video. Now when I listen to the slower versions it seems to lack the tempo and grace that Diane demonstrated in this video. After listening to this piece played slower by other, equally tallented, musicians, it somehow seems pale in comparrison.
I actually was listening to some slower versions of the Widor Toccata and can see where the slower version is better in many ways. I also understand there is a little argument going on about whether or not the slower version is the original vs the faster version Diane is playing here? In either case both versions have great appeal and majesty. The reason why I am sadly "hooked" on this version of the Toccata is because this was the first version I heard.
@darthsideous1968 LOL I thing the only way I'd be able to play this well is if i studied organ all my life...... I want to learn the organ so much. I already play the piano and love it but i want to learn the organ to.
It's almost like listening to Autumn by Vivaldi played slowly and majestically by one musician, THEN listening to the same piece played by violinist Gill Shaham, Gill Shaham plays it like he is on speed.....way too fast!
But ultimately it's all a matter of personal taste and what the listener likes....Simply put, different strokes for different folks I guess.
REMARQUABLE , bien que trop rapide, Me BISH a privilégiée le mouvement , ça se défends, sachant que cette piéce, selon la légende... fur composée dans un train (à vapeur) ? D.BABEL
OK yes, maybe for people it was too fast, but (i cant play this very well) all i ever want to do is sit down at a massive pipe organ and play this as fast as i can to show off.... the piece takes you and gets you into it. Diane plays this perfectly. No errors, No little slips.... She is a true musical Genius!
In my humble opinion the song is perhaps accelerated among other great resonance since the curch can still listen to betray DIANA BISH is a nice and wonderful person and lose everything ! Mistergiorgio1 -Foggia(italy)
Wow, I cannot imagine the complexity of the composer's mind required to layer muscial levels like this, let alone the mindset and physical abilities to play the piece.
@SiegfriedPretsch 1) Diane bish doesn't make mistakes. She carries herself with professionalism, on and off the bench. If YOU'VE played in churches around the world for 30 years then I'd love to see your show! 2) Enjoy this for what it is! What if everyone played it the same exact speed! It would get Boring!
I love Diane Bish, but I always quite disagree with her on the tempo for this piece. I don't necessarily think it reaches its full potential grandeur at the tempo Widor wanted (nor do I think the piece is appropriately marked by Widor or editors to suggest his tempo), but this piece, especially in an acoustical setting such as this, requires a slightly slower tempo to allow it to breathe. Bish, however, remains one of my favorite organists of all time. :)
@pianogenius While, perhaps, this is a little fast, I've always felt this Toccata, as well as Vierne's Finale from Symphony #1, were both written in the age of steam rail travel, and should both be played with the pace and determination of a steam locomotive charging down the tracks.
Diane Bish... The best recording ever of Widor's Toccata. God has made you the Master of this incredible instrument. A master of The Master. Fantastic!!
@cjbusboi There's something about this recording during the middle quiet part....like it's....."untouchable", like it's being played from above and we can only faintly hear it. It's amazing.
What amazes me about how Diane plays this piece isn't the tempo, but it's in how she makes it seem so very effortless.Superb.It must have been truly special having Diane playing for so many years at Coral Ridge. She is an inspiration to many including myself and the wonderful Samuel Metzger as well.
@superssjdan1 Also what makes Diane so wonderful is how she shows tremendoes respect for the music and composer and never forgets what playing is all about...not about the show..not about the organist..nor the composer even. It's about respect and to Glorify God in all we do.I've seen many a petulant showoff organist who never realize why we all do what we do.If it's not to Glorify God it's pointless. It all comes through in the performance.God bless Diane for everything she has done in her career
My favorite piece played by my favorite organist. Brava Diane! Your mastery was my original inspiration for becoming an organist. Whenever I need to find out how to play a piece, you're the first reference I look to. This episode of The Joy of Music is why I play the Widor in the same manor as you do: full of fire and passion!
Riveting performance! Sure, it is on the brisk side, but if you want people to listen to most organ music, you have to captivate them, and Diane does just that. Widor would have approved.
breakneck speed as usual
