@Gunslinger800 but in star trek they make the warp nacelles emit a special distortion. When combined with the gravity pull of the sun, it fractures space to open the rift. It is eve so slightly feasible, but it's still a controversial trek science.
@BKL8008 Yeah, because the slingshot trick around a large mass is actually the trick NASA programs it's unmanned probes with to slow them down so they can enter orbit around other planets (which is why they always take so fucking long to get there since they have to travel much greater distances). It doesn't enable time-travel and is one of Star Trek's greatest achievements in technobabble to date.
@randomface54 - I know it doesn't work in real life, thanks. It's just that they never used it to "rewind time" as they did in TOS, when it would have come in handy a few times. Already at Earth? Slingshot back and then overrun it to get home to the right century.
@MissEvaification Well to make a long story short: the script was retarded, voyager had 999+ ways to get home early but nooooo, they allways suddenly sucumb to stupidity and that never happens... even at the very last episode they seemed to have different priorities (its ok, lets just trash that borg transwarp hub, we shouldn't have anymore than 30 years left untill home and if we die on the way we die... f*** it!).
The video was a representation of those faliures, except the video failed too.
@Beef1188 Yes, that's true, but they still had duties as Starfleet officers. They couldn't just violate strategic advantages [such as crippling the Borg] because of their own inconvenience. That's why every piece of tech that got them where they were going would be ignored if they had to violate protocol to obtain/use it.
@newfreshreview Actually its neither, its stupidity. They could just go through and rig the delta flyer to have the same armor, stay behind and self destruct when voyager was deep enough in the conduit.
Like I said, noooo, they had to sucumb to stupidity when it seems to matter... redarded!
@newfreshreview Versus the crew of the Equinox took that path, of 'screw it all I wanna get home no matter what' which led to their demise. (The aliens woulda taken them out if Voyager hadn't stumbled on them in the nick of time)
Interesting, I'll give it that. I guess basically this wouldn't work, 'cos the future humans would keep coming back to correct it, because Voyager being in the Delta Quadrant for 7 years has already happened for them, long ago. Wouldn't matter how many they send back. If they know Janeway was gonna blow up Braxton, they just go back, warn Braxton and his people and Braxton would know to go back in a beefier ship and what to expect. Short and sweet, don't mess with those who know your future.
@KitFox21187 If they know Voyager's gonna blow up Braxton, then from their timeline Braxton had already been blown up, so it would be breaking their own rules if they tried to stop it...
@brch2 True enough, but they could always let it not happen. Simply done because future peoples time had the Voyager blow up future braxton, so if they stopped him from going back, 'cos they'd know who he is when he joins future time agency/federation, whatever it is. It would stop him from dying, Voayger from screwing stuff up, more than likely alter the timelime and probably even... oh no, I've gone crosseyed...
Unfortunately, this coudn't have happened. They'd just do like they did with Seven later on, and send another Braxton out, with a ship that could disable Voyager and drag them back kicking and screaming. There's no way that, after the destruction of the Alpha Quadrant, that Braxton had the best ship in the fleet the first time, and he almost destroyed Voyager with that tiny ship.
O.k. Nvmd. All the U Tube vids are silent right now. Must be a glitch on the site. I thought it was my puter @ 1st, but sound is working everywhere else.
Star Trek Time Travel is a mess, in Enterprise it was simply explained as being over your head, a major cop out in my opinion. But if you look at every example of Time Travel in every Star Trek Episode or Movie, I am sure you could work out a plausible theory for further Star Trek Shows to follow. At this point such a theory would be a hard pill to swallow at best. My idea was a research station on earth that was temporally shielded from changes in the past , but Enterprise fucked that up.
Time travel is a phenomenon hard to theorize. Mr. ThomasCWest say your back to the future example traveling to the future may still present yourself there in a future self. That specific future reality may not be the future for your current reality, but there is a chance that it could become it.
theres just a wiee bit of a problem with this serie, if you stay true to the temperal prime directive all changes in history would make the "timecop" come and fix it, but why dont thay come on the last epi and stop janeway from helping voyager get home a couple of years to early. ofc i do understand that the writers hade to come up with something and tbh i love the epi but still :(
I am a huge fan of Star Trek. But with one of the primary story arcs being time travel, How much of Star Trek is really an alternate timeline? I'll give you one clue:
In Star Trek IV, the probe would have destroyed Earth if Kirk didn't go back in time to repopulate the humpback whale species, hence creating an alternate timeline. "17 seperate temporal violations." "The largest file on record." "The man was a menace."
@MrThomasCWest But who cares? This still does not explain why having alternative timelines is morally ambivalent? Provided time 'splits' when a timeline is 'changed', why does that matter? Is there some limit to the number of universes that can exist? Where ever has it been explained why distorting time is bad for moral purposes? Unless you are 'killing others in the process' as is done in that one episode of Voyager, who cares? Kirk changed time by fixing humans' mistake, not by making it.
@MrThomasCWest The only explanation I've seen to the standard 'don't get involved' policy involves the rights of people to not suffer 'culture shock', which as is historically known to occur when a 'more advanced' society introduces technology (see Neil Postman's work, along with Marshall McLuhan's), and which can destroy societies and cultures--time is completely different, unless otherwise proven. Starfleet breaks the guidelines when they need to, because 'life' is more precious than 'time'.
@MrThomasCWest In this case, maintaining universal timeline 'purity' is of no value, unless it is to protect something worse from happening. But, even then, you introduce multiple moral paradoxes. If I do not save them, millions will live, but these people will still die. It is morally wrong to let these people die. I must prevent things that are morally wrong from occurring. Therefore, I must do both. The only moral conclusion is to send a 'message in a bottle' in the hopes we prevent both.
in Star trek going back and forth in time never created an alternate reality. changed the timeline sure but it was still the same universe. hint: if Kirk created 17 separate temporal violations then the timeline he created would not know of them, all they would see is Kirk disappearing and never returning if he went to the past again 'the shortest file on record' 'the man was likely killed' also we see time changing before out eyes in universe, like in First Contact (Borg Earth
Theoretically, you can travel to the past. But you cannot travel to the future without removing yourself from the present. If you travel to the future, you will not have an alternate self like you would if you traveled to the past, hence you donot create an alternate timeline unless you return to the past sometime before you went into the future. Back To The Future becomes an alternate reality in the first film.
If you disrupt the timeline by anything other than your presence, the two parralell* (mispelling corrected) timelines will continue to split, causing history to change so that it will not follow established events. If you could change certain events from happening, what would the present be like?
When you travel backwards through time, you create an alternate timeline just with your presence in the past. If you stay out of history's way, then the two timelines will be parralle. When you return to the moment in time in which you left, you are returning to the alternate present, not the prime, just because you created the alternate by going back in the first place.
Hahaha. The way the last part was timed was so devious. "Hahaha, he has an emiter now, but there won't be any problem shoving him back into the computer!"
i think i figured it out. if someone altered time such as with voyager. as soon as old janeway sent new janeway back to the alpha quadrant it would have eliminated old janeway because that version of her would never have existed so she would not go back in time. the only way i can think of that it might work is if captain janeway does the same thing as old janeway did even though she is not the same janeway......?! ow my head hurts.
It would have eliminated old Janeway in her future time, but not her future self in the present time (if you believe how time paradoxes are suppose to work)
Well it wasn't very nice to say the least, put it this way. If tempting with all this temporal anomoly business (which is illogical given the many worlds theory or inability to alter the timeline being the only logical possibilities- in the former case all possible timelines continue to exist so it doesn't matter, in the latter it just doesn't matter!.
Lol, i had honestly never occurred to me that if Voyager had stayed in the 20th century they could have simply used the sling shot effect around the sun to arrive back home in the 24th century and still be back at Earth.
@CaptainJahangir99 I highly doubt it was classified. I mean they held a public trial at the end where they were all thanked for saving the planet, and kirk is no science officer, i doubt he would be the only person with knowledge of the sling shot time travel. It wasnt a violation of the prime directive, since the last time i checked the prime directive didnt govern time travel, but rather inference with pre warp cultures or internal affairs of other cultures. This was just bad writing.
@Gunslinger800 if they had done that and all the thing suggested below the show would be over and the writers didnt want that they needed to keep it going so they could make their profits people got to put food on the table lol
@Gordon242011 because the show was about them getting home and if they got home the show would end because they reached their obejective and the climax of the show
I don't think simply blowing up the escort ship is the answer. Obviously that ship would be expected back along with taking Voyager back to the Delta quadrant. When that didn't happen another ship may have been sent out, previous to Voyager destroying the escort ship.

i don't watch ST except when i was little if i went into the room when my dad was watching it but that was funny how they killed loads of ppl and suddenly were like "cheers!" i take it it wasn't like that originally?
ST Voyager is one of the best ever released ST series.Even I am total fan of ST Voyager - because it has unique story, unique characters (Captain Janeway, Tuvok and others) and unique story line.I watched first episodes 10 years ago on our national TV here in Croatia.Because I love ST Voyager because it has one beautiful message : "People are travelers, because life is one unique journey"
ST Voyager is finally great great show and for me it's unforgotten. My life is voyage(r).
How can you refuse to VIOLATE THE TEMPORAL PRIME DIRECTIVE...yet, allow these people of the past to know you posses SCANNERS THAT SCAN TIME and that you have the ability to place them wherever they would want to go?
Furthermore, by seeing this guy YOU KNOW that Starfleet still exists in the future. That alone lets people know that you either beat the Borg or outsmarted them.
I'm probably going to sound ignorant, since I am brand new to Star Trek and don't understand half the things they are saying, but what exactly did Janeway do that makes you say she wouldn't do something like this?
Magnetrition. Research indicates, magnetic bacteria and the mitochondria have the same properties. The average person dies around age 70 due to insufficient turning during sleep. Astronauts, when they leave the Earth's magnetic field, must take with them a copy of the Earth's magnetic field, and insure their periodic movement within that field to prevent osteoporosis.
I LOVE STAR TREK!! Haters can kiss our asses and will never know anything about sci fi This serious along with next generation are AMAZINGLY well written and acted! I felt like they were family
i hate people who call us "nerds" for like sci fi shows i mean its wht we like we dont a sinifent name for anything! we just like or love this show wht make its differnt from fashion freaks and show offs?
Out of context there; and she had a huge ethical debates about that before deciding that the other two needed someone to speak for them or they would have been killed!
In that episode she should've said no to braxton and tried the kirk time travel method since they were already back at earth. i like how trek denies previous movies, or episodes existing, like the possibility of time travel without braxton's help.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
DarthSheen touched on a major flaw in the Star Trek shows. The shows' characters never seem to forget basic things that fans remember. The writers just wanted to make things to take longer so we'd watch more episodes. I think "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is so much more superior in storytelling.
I was a fan of Star Trek Voyager from the first episode! Gradualy I collected the entire series. The expansion of the Doctor helped make the show real special, in my view. :) Him and Seven of Nine are my two favourite charachters in this show.
that was pretty good. i feel like a geek saying this, but, i love voyager. I only wish i could aford the set! Its pretty bad when you know every different episode they clipped creating this video...good job... I only wish i could aford all six seasons! (im just kidding, seven seasons)

My life is voyage(r).

rysnyper50002 3 years ago
FUCKING RIDICULOUS.

Janeway wouldn't do something like this, for sure, but the best part of this video is when the video abruptly cuts out and they are all toasting.
Highly illogical... buy funny as hell.
arandomotaku 3 years ago 3
I'm probably going to sound ignorant, since I am brand new to Star Trek and don't understand half the things they are saying, but what exactly did Janeway do that makes you say she wouldn't do something like this?

that dosnt make a lick of sense

Magnetrition. Research indicates, magnetic bacteria and the mitochondria have the same properties. The average person dies around age 70 due to insufficient turning during sleep. Astronauts, when they leave the Earth's magnetic field, must take with them a copy of the Earth's magnetic field, and insure their periodic movement within that field to prevent osteoporosis.

DaColt88 3 years ago 2
she killed tuvix
Omarian1 3 years ago
Out of context there; and she had a huge ethical debates about that before deciding that the other two needed someone to speak for them or they would have been killed!
stads24 3 years ago
sure, but it still doesn't mistaken the fact she killed another innoceent living being even one that had been created from two others.
Omarian1 3 years ago
As Spock would say, "The needs of the many, outweigh the needs the of the few, or the one."

well i was a big fan of the show when I was 12 but now im all grown up now so you may be right .
And theres no way Im spending 145 $ on the last season of this show its not worth it any more Ill just wait for the last episodes to come on TNN
Narutocapri 3 years ago
Lol it is so pointless. Now they are stuck in the 20th century but on the bright side they are probably the most pwoerful thing in the quadrant.

wildcat1559 3 years ago
In that episode she should've said no to braxton and tried the kirk time travel method since they were already back at earth. i like how trek denies previous movies, or episodes existing, like the possibility of time travel without braxton's help.
DarthSheen 3 years ago 2

DarthSheen touched on a major flaw in the Star Trek shows. The shows' characters never seem to forget basic things that fans remember. The writers just wanted to make things to take longer so we'd watch more episodes. I think "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is so much more superior in storytelling.
zarromax 3 years ago
maybe they did that afterwards!
stads24 3 years ago
I was a fan of Star Trek Voyager from the first episode! Gradualy I collected the entire series. The expansion of the Doctor helped make the show real special, in my view. :) Him and Seven of Nine are my two favourite charachters in this show.
