HI Dave, cool vids. Quick question. Do you phase reverse your kick mics in your FOH mix or just for the drumfill? Obviously you phase reverse the underhead snare mic etc because it is out of phase with the top one. Just wondered if you do it for the cymbals and kick out front? Cheers.
Awesome. All concepts I had in my head, but this is the first time I've seen it all put together as an easy to understand whole. My question is this: How does using a boundary mic like a Beta 91 laying inside the kick drum change the equation? I think I may be blowing my own mind right now, but does the inside of a kick drum naturally have a phase canceled null point in the middle? Is that mic diaphragm effected by both drum heads? All I know for sure is my 91 sounds killer on kick drum.
@TheAjc612 Nothing special happens with the Beta 91. In fact if you open one you will see it is just a Beta98 mounted to a plate. So for all practical purposes, phase wise, it is the same a throwing any mic inside the kick.
hi from italy, I love your video, and a question: do you use polarity adjusting tools live, like say a little labs phase tool for rotation more or less than 180°?
@juvanella No, I don't use any fancy phase gear. if two mics are out of polarity due to position, I reverse the polarity. Other than that, time delay would be the accurate way of aligning mics at differing distances. Other than that, I can not see a good reason to complicate it beyond that.
Hi Dave. I really enjoy your videos. keep them coming ,i am learning so much from themThanks. I have a question? If I was to put the Drum fill on the side of the drummer where the sound would hit the drummer in his left side to the left of him. Would the same rules apply. Would there be no neg voltage from the drum. Is the pos voltage from the speaker just passing by the drummer.? Should the drum fill always be in the back of the drummer? Yes, No , and Y. Is to the left of him ok? Thanks
@Gritz101 Just carry some polarity reverse cables. XLR male to Female with pin 2 and 3 reversed on one end. Then add those cables in to polarity reverse.
Hey Dave. I really enjoy your videos. That said...
I have been mixing sound for about 3 years now. What a learning experience it has been. Anyway...I have never reversed the polarity of a kick drum mic. I can't tell if you do this because it is your basic practice to? Or do you reverse kick mic phase to aid in the reduction of drum monitor feedback? So if the drummer isn't running a monitor *behind* him, is the point of phase reversal moot?
I think this is some amazing information. So basically, any drum moving away from the performer should be reverse phase in the drum wedge making the speaker move away. Correct? With that being said, the snare drum top mic should be reverse phase and the bottom mic should be normal. Correct? Also, based on the FOH / MON polarity, there should be no reason to flip phase on the monitors. Correct? What happens when you send your phase corrected drums to the rest of the stage? Thanks in advance.

@cjsprrw Yes, I do the same in FOH as I would in monitors

@Carm0083 The pressure wave from the drum fill is the same regardless of whether it is off to the side or behind, so the same rules apply.

If you're mixing on a Mackie console with no polarity switch, yer fuct.

@drummerdonniedotcom The goal is to get the kick drum and drum monitor "in polarity" with each other.

@nyaudioengineer Take a look at the next two videos in the series and it should answer your questions.

Thanks, now I don't have to explain this anymore.

you only want to switch phases on a monitor console right?
what if you are running monitors from foh?

@thaflyinsoundman check out videos 2 and 3 and I cover the FOH versus monitor aspects.
