My Mom loved these guys(DC5)...she couldn't understand why they weren't bigger than the Beatles....they were a superb dance band, with great covers of old R & B hits. They just didn't have the song writing talent on board that the Beatles had.
Stop knocking Dave Clark. He's a great drummer and a great manager. The British Invasion and Rock 'N' Roll music in general would have been nothing without him and indeed The Dave Clark Five. Great tallented band, great tallented musicians and great tallented performers!... Well "great" ain't the word!
Smith WAS The Dave Clark Five. There are not any "live" performances of the DC5 to be seen anywhere !The ones that do exist are held by Dave and we will NEVER see them. They tried semi-live once on Sullivan 3/8/64 and it was ,to be kind, terrible ! A great act that had a hand in making many GREAT records, but ran backing tapes at LIVE concerts ! Yes he was a great manager and promoter !
kyannos, That's right . Dave has said in interviews that he was asked about doing a T.V. show along those lines.Their "legacy" to rock is they made great records ,looked great on T.V., and could lip-sync better than anyone !!
Great records. No doubt! But Dave can't even fake the drums well. In "Everybody Knows," there's a prominent and persistent tom-tom riff, and he doesn't even bother, so maybe he couldn't play hardly at all. But the sax thing pre-dates Roxy Music and is totally cool. Now I'm starting to wonder who could play what. "Any Way You Want It" is actually pretty amazing. Echo/reverb pre-dates the Beatles, and a super-cool major 7th chord in the hook. Their product was great, so hats off to the producer.
most bands did not take lip zinc serious and there for really did not try.I saw one Drummer playing a lobster crate in one vidio.Dave Clark 5 were all great musicians. When i think of all the great live music we could of had i just get mad, that thay had to fake playing.
I remember watching the DC 5 on Shindig. I was a great show that night. Thanks Gary for sending me this. Thanks to nyrainbow for posting this. 5*****'s
I have just sat through all of shindigs programs thanks to the people like nyrainbow, if it was not for people like her and others who brought this remarkable footage of days gone by, then these archives would be long gone and a part of my life time would never be known to my children. God Bless you all
In the 1st year of Shindig most if not all of the performances were live or recorded live at ABC to be lip-synched on the show. In the 2nd year, everybody lip synched to their records. I have never seen the DC5 play live on any TV show either. It may have been in their contract to not perform live??
Pretty empty praise from the host, promising the very best performances on television and then showing another lip-synched effort from the DC5. Singing karaoke to a backing tape requires more talent than the band is demonstrating here. I'm beginning to wonder if I'll live long enough to hear any live performance audio of The DC5 in their prime.
These guys could really rock. It's to be able to dig out their albums and play them once in awhile. I saw Mike Smith on Letterman one night. Too bad he passed away.
I turned 10 the nite of this show. I remember watching it. Shindig was always a cool show. But..watching them lip sync...I always wondered if the studio audience could tell if they not performing live. And whoever said it is dead on...Mike Smith had one of the greatest rock voices ever. Not only that...he had presence.
I wonder what D. Clark is up to now...and the rest of the remaining band members. Would love to know. Joel in Tucson
Sixteen years before I was born, but I don't care....I think having one parent having grown up in the 60s help me to appreciate the DC5 among others. :)
Sorry Screwy, no way...This was Shindig, not Hullabaloo......Hulla was in color, Shindig was not. Too bad the performances werent live..........I saw them back in the day and never noticed the difference..but of course now its a different story....Any way you want it is classic...Hell, even KISS covered that song.
You sure don't see many drummers up front like this. Maybe Andy Sturmer of Jellyfish saw these guys as a kid...

I never knew the Dave Clark 5 had ever covered the Disney classic song "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah"!
But it was cute!
And while "Everybody Knows" is not as well-known as the band's other hits, but it was a nice mid-tempo pop song of the period.

@altfactor that song was actually covered here in Australia by New Zealand band Max Merritt and The Meteors. Real uptempo version.

Dave Clark resides in the UK. He owns all the DC5 masters and with his royalties he bought the rights to the BBC's music show Ready Steady Go.
