I don't see why everyone is so vehemently opposed to any suggestion of a game of any other genre set in the Homeworld universe; Personally I think it'd be awesome to see this game branch out. Maybe from a different perspective, we can get some more meat on the universe and characters.

I have some theories about this film.

Narriation is from the side of Bentusi nation.

Till 0:55 they are telling us, how the galaxy looks like before the Hiigaran Core wos found. Next, they are telling us about the consequences of founding this core, "pain and bloodshet", war, the Hiigaran crusade against Turanic Rayders.

@ilikepienotu As far as I can tell you, Home world 2 still beats any Space Age strategy games through it's simplicity to this date(Star Wars empire at War(not even close), Sin of Solar Empire(fun but too complicated and time consuming). It was fully game play style up to date compare to all the new Space strategy games out there. Easy to play, easy learning curve, no complicated movements and remembering a bunch of sequences and buttons. HW3 must be a go. Fully updated graphic + upgrade tree.

Both Homeworlds were very fun games, but the things that consistently stand out for me is the soundtrack and the story. The creepy, ethereal, semi-tribal space songs really made every skirmish a dramatic affair. Also I can't think of any other RTS that actually had such an engaging story. Homeworld 1 especially has excellent storytelling. Who remembers the ghost ship, the gardens of kadesh, and the supernova science station missions? Every mission was a fresh challenge.

Epic game, i finished the game in 1.0 version, where save is imposoble during playing a lvl and im proud i finished it to end. In my memorys, this is one of the hardest and worthy game to play for me.

if you dont like to use micromanaging which is considered (tactical play) then brush up on your strategy. the games aren't really that hard. i can make it through most of the game with strike craft alone, using the censor manager. now im a RTS god so dont feel bad if you cant do that. but try to find an alternate way to beet the levels.

also you will find that the more you progress with out using RU cheats for campaign, the more money the game provides. its easy really.

Delete the folder when you uninstall the game.

Or if you know how, find the .ini file that contains the options and change the resolution there. But just killing the HW2 folder (default is C:\Program Files\Sierra\Homeworld2, but hthis may vary) and reinstalling will work.

Seeing these videos only pisses me off. I have a copy of Homeworld 2 I purchased for only $10. I played it apparently too much cause my disc is now so scratched that I can't reinstall it. I want to play this game so bad and I am hoping that something like Direct 2 Drive or Steam releases it. All the physical copies I can find are more expensive than brand new PC games. Anyone know if there's any way to use your CD key or jewel case and CD to get a new copy?

The Homeworld games ARE amazing!

My problem with HW2 was all its ship balance issues (endurance, armor, weapon types, etc.) Otherwise the visuals, ship designs, backgrounds and non-playable structures, effects, voice casting, and music were all gorgeous just like HW1.

@EVAUnit4A My problem is the insane difficulty of the single player campaign (which has always been the main draw of Homeworld). Besides the stupid scaling difficulty, you're not given much time to freely build in the first 3 missions. Even then, at times it just gets absurd.

The presentation was stellar (in particular the graphics and music are still great today), but the actual story felt very lacking. Very hacked together and detached compared to the original Homeworld

Yeah, there was a definite disconnect with the story, and the ending kinda spoils any future plans for HW3 because many of the established rules get thrown out. The only options for new villains will probably be aliens from another galaxy. (PLEASE god, don't bring back the Beast, that was a terrible villain for HW!)

Cataclysm was a very good game because it didn't try to be more than it was, even though the story was typical sci-fi (think Borg Collective), it was still fun, unique, and engaging, HWC was kind of like a Homeworld "mini game" and so succeeded

The story of HW2 was so poor, especially in compare to HW1! They totaly ignored one big problem which makes the whole bullshit about the cores nonsense: the core in Mothership was not the original one found on Kharak, it was a 12 times smaller copy built using reverse-engineering. The original core was destroyed when Kharak was burned.

No, that's why there planet was destroyed.

They were exiled because their fleets were annihilated and the Galactic version of the UN (the guys that hyperspaced in at the end of the 1st one) told the Taiidani that they couldn't exterminate them. So they exiled them and forced them to abandon the hyperspace tech.

'Tis explained in Homeworld 1 and parts of Homeworld 2.

I imagine the creative team behind the game weren't consulted and... I'm going to guess the people that made HW2 just didn't care and wanted to do their own EPIC JOURNEY.

Of course, Cataclysm did that without just tossing continuity out the window. Not something I get worked up about... just another missed opportunity.

Homeworld 2 was made by the same team as Homeworld 1. Cataclysm was made by a totally different team.

HW2 was made under a lot of pressure and limitations though, and its planned expansion (all the stuff in the finale about the Eye of Amarra or whatever) was canned before HW2 was finished.

In 2004, THQ Purchased Relic Entertainment. In November 2007, THQ purchased the rights to the Homeworld Universe from Sierra / Vivendi. I think you'll find that Homeworld 3 *will* be getting made at some point in the future.
