To save even more money on an srt-4, buy a regular 5-speed neon. Pull the engine out of a caravan (or voyager). drop it into the neon. bolt up the 5-speed and add a junkyard turbo. I had a teacher in college do that and he used to beat stock srt-4's at the local dragstrips with it. BTW the engine in the caravan is basically the same engine as in the srt4, just detuned and non-turbo.

the reason they kept the hp relatively low compared to say an evo or sti, is because they were trying to make an inexpensive car that can go fast. they made it front wheel drive to keep it inexpensive but you cant throw 300 hp to the wheels on a stock fwd suspension; idiots who cant drive will crash due to torque steer

It could be possible. Still the SRT 4 Neon is great.

That's very true. But much like the Daytona of Dodge's past, if they quoted the REAL horse power, insurance companies would flip and you'd be paying out the ass in premiums.
Think about it...220-230 at the wheels...that's roughly 240-250 HP. If insurance companies knew that, (and parents to boot) they wouldn't have sold as well as they did.
Dodge is using the correct figures on the Caliber SRT, 285 HP I think it is. I've seen two of them on the road. (Couldn't be cause its ugly, right?)
Well... most SRT-4's have been abused so it's hard to tell. Jackass owner before me beat the living hell out of the tranny so i had to put 1200 into my tranny when i first got the car. Since then it's been a charm these last 3 months no problems whatsoever.. and i run it pretty rough sometimes. I would say they are pretty reliable. I drove 18 hours on a trip and had no problems. I didn't boost maybe more than 5 times.. so my gas mileage was around an amazing 30 MPG. Gotta love turbo!

my brother has a 2005 srt4 and with an intake, a custom exhaust and raising boost with stocks fuel injector, stock computer and stock fuel regulator he gaot in the 1/4 mile times of 12.8 sec. He didn't spend a lot of money, only a boost controller, an intercooler, port the stock turbo and he got that time. The SRT-4 is a great car and is not expensive

Seems to be quite moderately powerfull for a 2.4l turbo, almost lacking compared to many 2.0l turbo...like its underpowered or maybe set up to be mega safe. Get the boost up!

That's very true. But much like the Daytona of Dodge's past, if they quoted the REAL horse power, insurance companies would flip and you'd be paying out the ass in premiums.
Think about it...220-230 at the wheels...that's roughly 240-250 HP. If insurance companies knew that, (and parents to boot) they wouldn't have sold as well as they did.
Dodge is using the correct figures on the Caliber SRT, 285 HP I think it is. I've seen two of them on the road. (Couldn't be cause its ugly, right?)

Well... most SRT-4's have been abused so it's hard to tell. Jackass owner before me beat the living hell out of the tranny so i had to put 1200 into my tranny when i first got the car. Since then it's been a charm these last 3 months no problems whatsoever.. and i run it pretty rough sometimes. I would say they are pretty reliable. I drove 18 hours on a trip and had no problems. I didn't boost maybe more than 5 times.. so my gas mileage was around an amazing 30 MPG. Gotta love turbo!

Good comment buddy. I'm sick of the "It's just a Neon bullshit". People that say that don't realize.. there are 700 HP Neons anyways and no 700 HP impreza's or base lancers that I'm aware of. I also know of many Neons with 300k miles on them. Sure this is a completely different car.. BUT what if it was a Neon? It's reliable, has won rally championships and they make way more power than their Civic and Corolla competitors.

This is a neon under the skin and in it's class there are many better cars such as the wrx, gti, etc. And no, these cars did not sell very well in the grand scheme of things. Many people are afraid to buy cars from american car makers because of the stigma they carry. Of course i know what the big three are... or should i say, used to be, but please remember that Dodge is a subsidiary of Chrysler, thats why i'm not the only one mentioning this.
American car manufacturers have been struggling due to competition from abroad, the economic downturn is what finally pushed them over the edge; the last nail in the coffin if you will.
I must say that i admire the fact that we don't get too down and dirty about this.

What???? The people on here are not ignorant at all, they just say what they feel... and the general feeling is that most american auto manufacturers (up until very recently) make shitty cars. And this 'feeling' is supported by just about every car review magazine you can lay your hands on.
the old big three started their decline over a decade ago when they decided that they would focus on SUVs rather than cars.

my brother has a 2005 srt4 and with an intake, a custom exhaust and raising boost with stocks fuel injector, stock computer and stock fuel regulator he gaot in the 1/4 mile times of 12.8 sec. He didn't spend a lot of money, only a boost controller, an intercooler, port the stock turbo and he got that time. The SRT-4 is a great car and is not expensive

safety? based on what? this car got marks consistent with every other subcompact sedan in 2003, therefore the idea that the vehicle 'isn't safe' is silly and ignorant.

im not sayin im a bad driver, im just sayin there are bad drivers that i could encounter. btw the honda civic, ford focus, hyundai elantra, mazda 3, toyota corolla, volkswagen jetta, even the mitsubishi lancer got ratings of good while the srt-4 got a marginal. yes the srt-4 does perform better than other cars(obviously american cars) but more than half of the compact cars tested by the IIHS performed better.
