I am an old soldier. This song is so important to me I can never fully express.
somehow Elton John and Bernie Taupin have captured the essence of being a survivor or war/combat, and the sense of loss, and bewilderment that endures forever.
@hankpac As an adolescent I was a big fan of Elton John. This song was near and dear to my heart because I used to imagine that was how my father, a WWII veteran felt. I never played this song for him because I knew it would make him feel bad. He pretty much kept his experiences to himself however I saw in him what you have described - the sense of loss and bewilderment. It endured until his death at the age of 87.
I'm a Christian Man and the fact that Elton is a Gay is an issue between him and the Lord. His Musical talents reigns superior to any other artist out there. The little Pop icons of to day will not be around still selling out every venue. You folks that judge Elton for being Gay, just remember that the Lord will be judging you also, a sin is a sin, no difference. Think about it before you post ugly things.
This is a marvelous song - one of those buried treasures. I have also read that the studio recording of this song is the only one in his catalog that is just him and the piano (no strings, synth, etc.). And I wouldn't want it any other way.
This is even more poignant when you realize that Elton sang it less than three weeks after Princess Diana died. I have no doubt that "deepened" the emotional intensity with which he sang this haunting song.
This is one of the greatest songs EVER. it wasn't written by Bernie Taupin, if i remember correctly. The original from Tumbleweed Connection is much better. His voice more passionate and in a higher register. Beautiful - this version also. With lines like, "Do they know what it's like to have a graveyard as a friend" or "Drink up, you've got your memories" it's truly a remarkable song!
What the hell are you talking about? Of course Bernie wrote the lyrics to this, and the last line you quote is actually "just ignore all the others, you've got your memories" not 'drink up'
i stand corrected. yes, you're right - on both counts. i have the actual LP, which is where i double-checked. don't know where i got the idea it wasn't. hmm... as for the last line i knew the last line, i just summarized it differently. forgive me.
well, now i remember. there is another great great song on the Tumbleweed Connection that was not written by Taupin, but Leslie Duncan. of course i could be wrong, but i don't think so. anyway, it was rare that elton released a song that wasn't written by him, but there you go. excellent song called Love Song!
I loved Tumbleweed since living in the states so many years ago, this version is not as crisp as the album, not as honky piano, Elton is great got all his albums
Note: this was Elton's only studio song to have only voice and piano!! Hard to believe, eh? Impressive how faithful he is to the original here. IMHO his best album, Tumbleweed Connection. JG
I've seen EJ over 20 times around the world and never seen him perform this - it is prob my favourite EJ song along with "The Greatest Discovery". Is there any way I can get the audio of this vid and keep it on my iTunes library?
Tumbleweed is a wonderful album. Probably my favorite. I include many (including this!) old elton songs in my repertoire. I sing them the way he did back then. The original version of this song is so passionate. It's incredible.
Thanks nutcher for adding this beautiful song...one of my all time fav songs(showing my age)...not many people know about it which really surprises me...its off the tumbleweed connection album which is one of the first albums i ever bought...thanks again...
Breathtaking. Absolutely breathtaking. This song was precocious and beautiful when he recorded it at 23 years, but full of the weight of life and experience when he sings it here at fifty. It sounds more than true.
@wags2010 - I know this is an incredibly old comment, and I agree that they're the best composer/lyricist pair of all time, but that's just it. Taupin wasn't the composer, he just wrote the lyrics as poems, and John put them to music. Basically, John is a musical genius, but Taupin is the "voice" behind the words.
OMG!! I have seen Elton Soooo Many times and never seen him perform this song. It is one of my all time favorites! SO much emotion in this. Thanks so much!
My favourite music of his are the album songs like this. I like most of his hits but not as much as his albums.

A touching version! What a lonely life at the end of the way for an old soldier! We are soldiers of peace, not war! Elton's voice express that!

Both versions shred my gizzard. Eye leakage guaranteed. Also, if you're older, folks, Elton's '60 yrs. On' can be deeply touching.

I've always found it difficult to hit the higher notes sitting down, like John does when he plays piano too. Kudos, Mr. John! Wonderful music.
