@D , I suspected it might not be his house and perhaps was a "rental" or loaned for the video shoot. The main point was that he's making a VERY good living playing drums - which is rare. He's managed to find a combo of session work, a regularly working road band (which is where the real good money is at) and now training and sponsorship- all, which I'm certain earns him more than most professional's can make in other fields of work. He's working REAL hard, but he's doing what he loves too do.
One of few drummers I've seen besides Buddy Rich and a hand full of others that can truly do an actual ONE HANDED ROLL and not even break a sweat. His feet are fast as lightening, he's got a brain-clock that can keep time to anything. The guy is REALLY SH T hot good. REALLY good. Beautiful home he's got there also. I've heard people ask, "why would this guy be playing with Styx?". Well, he can go on the road REGULARLY with them, probably pulling down $250K to $500K annual = HOUSE you see.
always difficult to find a good title for an instrumental song.T.O.J is perfect for this tune...powerful and delicate at the same time. Music is the way to other "planets"!
I have two masterworks toms, which I am slowly collecting and building a whole kit around. Todds kit has the greatest sounding toms I have ever heard, the kick sucked tho, open er up.
y'all need to chill and enjoy sure u can analyze. why not? Todd's frickin awesome and way beyond me. so i will. but i also listen too. i like the song, kinda Spyro Gyra, yellowjacketsish, i'm cool with that. i'll never play a song in 13/8 NEVER so i can appreciate what he's doing but as for me i'll leave it to guys like Todd and I'll play what i play and maybe he could appreciate me.
It isnt in 13/8, its actually in 27/8 (7+6+7+7)... it actually changes throught time but it basically stays in that numbers... although theres some triplet things going in there so u can count as 3/16
@sh4p31y are you really telling drummers to stop counting and analyzing on a drumming video...? That's like telling people not to tap their foot to the beat of a song. That's just what drummers do.
@skater15153 sometimes, to learn a song, you just gotta listen and find the groove/feel of the song. sometimes, it's like learning to sing a pop song. we don't analyze and try to write down the notes in the melody, we just try to sing along.
i was hoping to encourage drummers to look beyond drumming, and enjoy the entire piece of music. so nothing wrong with counting/analyzing (i am a drummer, but more importantly a musician), but we all need reminders to listen sometimes
@sh4p31y I don't really think that the two have to be entirely independent of each other...drummers should always be aware of the entire composition of the song. Counting doesn't necessarily ruin the ability to do that.
@skater15153 oh of course. i just saw a lot of comments on trying to count the beat, so i was just strongly (to say the least) suggesting to just enjoy the song.. more of an exaggerated comment than anything
Hey guys, all your methods to count this 13/8 measure may be making it easier to get the beat happening at first and stuff. Dividing it into two measures or whatever makes it even easier to write down and everything. But don't count like that forever, because it isn't the real 13/8. Count >1 a 2 a 3 a 4 a 5 a 6 a 7< and you'll notice that you can play more fluently without sticking to two counted 1's in one bar. Playing that way makes it way easier to stretch your solo phrases...
ive probably got 2 or 3 comments on this video that have gone too far down the page to read because they where a while ago about how good this guy is, so im going to move on. that is one sexy looking drum kit :-p
@Jabarichonicles I have no idea why I'm on this video correcting like this but I'm pretty sure it's 13/16. If you count 16th notes in a pattern like this: 1234 1234 12345 you will notice this. It will of course also count as 13/8 but then you'll be couning on offbeats which makes no sense in my opinion.
no, im not counting it like that, but is it harder to say 1e+a 1e+ 1e+ 1e+ or the other...counting like this makes it easier to count out loud and for odd time makes it split up into easier measures to count instead of counting with words...its also just a personal prefrence...idc what u do, thats just how i learned it
@christianschererer Dude... stop trying to sound smart; his drums are miked. They could sound like that in just about any room as long as you have mikes and gates.
I love this guy. He has been an awsome drummer for years. Although I love drummers like Neil Peart, Nikko McBrain, If I could choose who I would like to play like it would be Todd Sucherman. I play, but not as good as this.
But Joey Jordison and Travis Barker are way better. HA just kidding this is great! Love the use of the vertical bass drum, tuning and tom intervals are perfect, good stuff!
I watched him play this at a drum clinic. I was about 7 or 8 feet away. Trust me, this is even more incredible in person. Todd is really nice, too. I met him after the clinic and he gave me some awesome advice on stick technique and ways to avoid fatigue when playing a long set. Just a good, down-to-earth guy. Thanks, Todd!

i started a new full time job a few months ago and got horribly out of practice on the drums. but every time i watch this video i get inspired. today i went and tuned them up and played for about half an hour straight and i think ive made up most of the lost ground :-D (it wasnt just today though. i could 2 or 3 10 minute ones over the last couple of weeks, and also benny greb has been inspiring me to play more as well but i just love this one)

I've been playing for 8 years and still can't figure out how the hell he is playing this stuff. It just blows my mind how specific and how precise his hands are with feet. It's scary. One of the best drummers.
As much as i love todd's playing he is matched if not bettered by alot of drummers. Im attending berklee college of music and tallent like this is found by just about all of our percussion teachers

@siobhan104 1st: i don't think that there are any first or any seconds when reffering to such high levels and 2nd: i don't actually think that Todd Sucherman is second to somebody.. he is in a level of his own, as everyone else as technically profissient and musically interesting as Todd..

Great drummer and a special human being too. He plays a Pro Mark "Todd Sucherman" signature stick. Sort or a longer 5B maple.

This guy is ballin'. Everything he plays, you're like, "how'd he do that?"

Second only to Gavin Harrison. Similar sort of styles.

@siobhan104 1st: i don't think that there are any first or any seconds when reffering to such high levels and 2nd: i don't actually think that Todd Sucherman is second to somebody.. he is in a level of his own, as everyone else as technically profissient and musically interesting as Todd..
