My favorite scene is a little farther along in the movie where he hallucinates a bat eating a rat and then screams bloody murder. To me, that was when he really hit bottom. He looks really crazy.
He got off easy ... last time I pulled a stunt like that, two guys dragged me into the kitchen, kicked in nine of my teeth, punched me in the face, ribs, and gouged out one of my eyes with a candle-holder before pushing my face onto the grill and garnishing my smoking head with lightly-sauteed onions in a white wine sauce, kicking me in the groinal area until I puked into a large caesar salad, which they jammed up my arse with the cleaner's mop handle, dousing me in hot grease and lighting me up
See this movie before you throw away your life to that drunk who's on the horizon. Kick him/her to the curb ASAP!!! Props to Billy Wilder and the great Milland!!!
@spagandtuna In 1960, over New Years Eve, I visited Chicago to see some friends. 1st, tho, I went to Skid Row on W. Madison Street. What I saw were men laying on doorways, bars full of drunks - even a few young men - and shared a meal with an alky who could not talk in understandable words. I was even invited by some alkies to come along downtown. They said, "There will be a lot of spare change tonight. Good spare changing."
I had read about skid row in college, and I just had to go.
I agree...but it's tough to persuade those who market the movie that it isn't noir..The bat attacking the mouse in the wall is at least ...very very expressionistic don't you think?
Yes indeed!!!! the raincoat scene is good.....but I prefer the bat attacking the mouse in the wall during his d.t. scene....he well deserved the Oscar... the Big Clock from 1948 and dial M for murder from 1954 (Hitchcock) are two great Ray Milland movies as well
I always found this movie funny especially that scene. I know I shouldn't but I did. I'm laughing as I'm writing this. Does anyone remember the scene with the raincoats?
i like this film....hollywood has tried 2 show alcoholism with leaving las vegas and the days of wine and roses and when a man loves a women, but no cunt does a job like ray milland.....he showed the world wut alcohlism is !!!!

This scene is hilarious in the book. He actually doesn't even get to look inside the purse before they catch him trying to walk out.

Ray Milland at the peak of his career. He plays at his best. One of most memorable performances ever.
