The Letters on the coins are from the coins run, for example, A would be the first run, B second or similair. You get coins that are rare for example a indian head from such a year and a serial letter D.
I you understand what I mean. Also coins can be worth more for misprints for example uk 2008 20p, with no date stamped

You should'nt handle the coins and especially have them scraping each other. You are damaging them. Get plastic sleaves for them but chemical free ones that won't damage them. Also Don't get them cleaned with chemical solutions as that will damage and destroy the coins. ;)
@alex2619838 When I was digging through some coins I came across a 1938 wheat penny. I know that was the year before WWII started. I kept it in safe keeping in case of one day that would be worth a something.
