The music isn't half as important as the meaning behind it. People picked up instruments they didn't know how to play and tried to make music to prove that anyone can do it (regardless of gender), and prove it they did.
Yeah, but for those who don't think it's good music, it's still important to acknowledge it as an important part of music history if only for the reason why it happened.
Who helps the corpotations? it is Bush and Barack HUSSEIN Obama...they are owned by the corporations, the corporations also destroy independence...including music!
"Barack HUSSEIN Obama"? Are you trying to troll here or are you really as stupid as you sound? What the fuck does that have to do with anything? To criticise him and imply that his supposed faults are because he's Muslim (he's not, by-the-way) just makes you look like an Islamophobic, racist moron.
All this is besides the point that yr argument is deeply flawed. Corporations do suck, however state-owned business (the only real solution) would kill independence and creativity much quicker.
1) Obama is a KAFFIR who was born in KENYA!!! I'M A RACIST...NO SameWayOfSaying, YOURE A FUCKING RACIST!!!!! Obama destroyed the budget in one year, the USA IS BROKE, and OBAMA's INFLUENCE IS SLIPPING THANK GOD!!! Hope and Change, yes we can, 01/20/13. YEA WE CAN THROW OUT OBAMA FOR ETERNITY!!
art students don't become lawyers bud - wrong choice of subject.
someone blamed the demise of the indie scene on them. fuck me, talk about exaggerating the power of one little band. sure their situationism was a little misplaced at times, and sometimes they believed the hype from the music press to their own detriment (witness the TJ's non-ruck!), but on the whole they were a breath of fresh air and the last hurrah of the true indie scene.
Does anyone have a video of them doing this on 'The Word'? I think it's the same episode where Mark Lamarr gave that homophobic idiot Shabba Ranks a much deserved hard time.
Is this the UK Huggy Bear from the 90's I've happened upon?
If it is the one I'm thinking of [it sure sounds like them!], I can't talk for the whole group, but I worked with Jon for a few years. He was one of the sweetest, kindest and most thoughtful people I have ever had the fortune to meet and I miss him as a friend to this day. I've got a couple of their old 45's in my collection, but it's not the kind of thing I play very often!
oh man huggy bear hardly get any recognition at all, there is such a missunderstanding of the word indie now days in the uk... and the nme says the ultimate indie band was the shitty libertines, them who probs didnt know huggy bear when they were around

If you type 'Huggy Bear' into youtube the first thing you come up with is not the lovable informer from Starsky and Hutch (ain't we come a long way since the Wire), but this rock solid die in a fire crap. I didn't want to be reminded of it, but there it was. And I say die in a fire you bleating crap.
Absolutely! Cheers to that! Her Jazz was the first thing I heard from these guys when it was first released and it still knocks me out :)
And who are all these people who want to put them down? Odd.... must be sour grapes. To people like godstomper: If you were any good at anything we would be watching your vids, but um, we aren't so... go do something!!
I don't understand; why are all you weirdos searching for huggy bear if you don't like it? Presumably because it's one of the most vibrant and memorable scenes of the last thirty years and you can't forget about it.
Passion and integrity never go out of fashion godstomper - unlike whatever bland, nothing kind of band you were in.
Her Jazz is the main reason I still have a turntable attached to my stereo.
God, they were as irritating as f*ck. They had an art-student-soon-to-be-lawyer vibe and a humourless posturing that should be burnt in a fire. It was a time of great artistic endeavour for people who could scrawl cute cryptic slogans on their forearms everywhere, so their 7 inches sold more each time they changed hands for a while.
I tried to like this stuff at the time, I really did. I even sat through an HB set at the Newcastle Riverside without leaving, even with a Slampt support act. However, it was the self-indulgent, merit-free, talent-free cacksters of Huggy Bear's ilk that put the final nail in the coffin of underground guitar music, closed the clubs and condemned the UK to a five year monoculture of dance music. Glad you enjoyed yourself, ourvoltage: want to buy my mint copy of "Rubbing the Impossible..." ?
Yeah, just because you don't like it means it's "self-indulgent, merit-free, talent-free" and because the riot grrrls didn't appeal to your sensibilities they're " just bad news". Thank you, master of the universe.

Dude - no one liked them, even those with a high tolerance threshold for tunelessness and a sympathy for the message behind the egos (those being my "sensibilities"). That being why the whole scene rapidly disappeared up its own fundament without a cultural ripple having destroyed a vibrant live UK music scene. And that's not opinion.

i know the feeling . we used to have to play with these bands to get any shows back in the 90's. they were some of the most fucked up evilest people on earth.
now some of the bands i met had cool people that i still think of as friends but that riot grrl scene was just bad news.
lmfao, yr a card. some of those 'fucked up evilest ppl' are still around. like the one commenting you right now. good news or bad news, it happened and it was great. get it? good. done.
Anyone else catch them in TJ's? Wizzing my tits off (thanks Bristol grrrrls!) - fucking ace - Witchypoo! You still out there? You were special! Kill the motherfucking President! Fucking Yeah! Thanks for everything. And a big thankyou to Bikini Kill lady - very polite, love grrrrls with bobs (ex-mod syndrome).
i was introduced to huggy bear by a friend back in may 2006. i managed to scrounge up a few of their recordings and have since fallen in love (madly).
seeing live footage is a great pick-me-up, especially at 2am on a Monday.

Witness the dirge that has become commonplace since the Brit-pop explosion of the early 90's. The indie scene was killed by the corporations.
Fuck the charts. Indie's dead. Long live the new indie!
Get your mates together, form a band, make some fucking noise!
