How could you possibly compare some of the present music with this. This is classic, smooth, mellow, real meaningful lyrics, excellent musical arrangement......WOW!

Patti has sung so many wonderful songs, wonderfully! Check it out. A whole LOT of them weren't even Quincy-produced! Don't get me wrong, LOVE their work together. Wish he'd produced 2nd full Patti Austin album, though 'Every Home Should Have One' DOES hold a special place in my heart. Patti Austin is AMAZING. It's still a bit like the industry does not want people to know all of PA's musical contributions/achievements. SMH.
MS. PATTI AUSTIN and QUINCY JONES, you set the STANDARD. This music inspired me and STILL DOES! Your PROFESSIONALISM SHINES THROUGH, thanks for NEVER compromising your highest standards. You have ALWAYS BEEN MY #1!!!! Thanks for saving my life in 1992, GIRL WHO USED TO BE ME from Shirley Valentine. IF I BELIEVE in PARADISE ... I'm THERE! BLESSINGS thanks for posting, more love for QUEEN PATTI AUSTIN!
I like Patti's version its soo beautiful. the music is magical..check out this brotha's version as well, his name is jagsoulsinger , and I also like this other version I heard years ago by some lady, shes jazz but don't remember her name
One of my all-time favorite songs. First heard Stevie's original back in the spring of '72 -- when I was all of 11 years old and damn near 40 years later, this still gives me chills when I hear it. I like Patti's jazzed up version of this Stevie classic. It's almost (not quite) as good as Noel Pointer's remake which in my opinion, is hauntingly and otherworldly beautiful.
With Luther Vandross doing the vocal arrangements with Patti, an all star backing Choir recorded on a 64 track machine where every backing vocal could be mixed individually - a producers wet dream....
just makes one feel good inside out like you are in the NYC(NEW YORK CITY) YOUR MIND IS FEEL FROM ALL AND EVERYTHING WHAT HAS HAPPEN TOTHE REAL ARTIST PEOPLE ACTUALL TAKING YOU THERE HEAVEN HELP US THANK GOD FOR YOU TUBE....
I meant Quincy's re-arrangement not Stevie's original arrangement. All the jazzy stuff that's been added to the song is very Whiz (as I spelled it). It reminds me of the traffic light scene when they arrive to Oz.
I'm sorry but this is a kick ass jazzy dramatic version of Superwoman-which is my favorite song so it's kind of major that I like this...but given that Q produced it, well now it all make sense. I like this much better than Donnie Hathaway's...of course Stevie's is the best :)
OK! keep the flute but take out the Lyricon solo (sorry tom scott) and put Noel's violin in it's place. If you take out the flute the song loses it's flavor. This is the mark of a true genius song writer (Stevie Wonder) it's a great song how ever sings it.Have you heard Donny Hathaway's version?
@uniquess I feel you. Noel's rendition was something was it not? You are so right though, Noel's violin would have really made this song a super piece of work ! Never the less I still love this song. Have you heard The Main Ingredient's version with Cuba Gooding,Sr. on lead vocals? It is great too.
@uniquess I feel you. Noel's violin would have been right on point. I also love his rendition of this great classic. Have you heard The Main Ingredient's version with Cuba Gooding,Sr. on lead vocals. It is smooth as silk. Noel's violin combined with the flute would have been awesome !
I'm comparing this version to Noel Pointers instrumental version and I must say I would've loved to have heard Noel playing on this track. May be substituting the flute (sorry Hubert no disrespect) for his violin. What do you all think? - Patti I love you!
THE BEST VERSION OF THE TUNE ... without a doubt ... quincy has got the cream on this track ....

I often wonder why Patti covered this tune given the lyrics. I mean, what was her interpretation of the song?

You can tell the same composer of some of the Whiz songs did this...love it!

Also, I believe that's Luther V. on background towards the end!! Esp. since he's on the 'Sounds' album as well.

It is. He sounds so sweet. Don't forget that he and Patti dueted on "I'm Gonna Miss You in the Morning."

those chords.. sick. It has that 70s hippie soul vibe. Its actually up there with stevie's. I really like the direction she took it.

The most beautiful song she ever sang. Strong opinion, yes, but all mine.

There's no apostrophe in 'its' if it's possessive. i.e. "loses its flavor".
But I like the song the way it is. I never knew Donny did this!

And a fantastic vocalist in the lead in Patti Austin and a touch of Luther Vandross as well in the backgrounds.
