Servers have been up the whole time. It might be something with your computer though.. Announcements are made on the forums if there will be some downtime on the servers. Give it another try, it should work,.

@andysan007 it has been some time since I have played but i recall making items that were in high demand and selling them in my merchants. You could try doing the same. Find out what items are fairly easy to make and are commonly used by players.
