  • HOLY HELL. She is unbelievable.. One year after TJGS.

  • Remarkable, truly remarkable. You can't escape her talent. Looking through many of her clips on You Tube and other places, she wore this outfit over and over again (along with some other great outfits that were made for her TV show by Bob Mackie). They always make her look so beautiful. No matter if it was because she had to be thrifty. You don't catch anyone today wearing anything twice.

  • I think there was an element of thrift involved (and also perhaps because of Judy's nomadic existence in the last few years of her life) but this outfit was a particular favourite possibly because it worked whether she was carrying a few extra pounds or significantly underweight as she was in the last couple of years

  • @WildWestGuy1

Thanks for the insight. Your comment makes sense about it being flattering when she was a little bit heavier or much thinner. I've noticed a couple of other dresses from the show, as well as the pant suit that was made for her on "Valley of the Dolls" that she wore when she performed during her last few years.

  • Passionate & wildly soulful, nobody could infuse a song with so much greatness like Judy...Ed was thrilled and easy to see why...Bravo Judy!

  • the saddest part is those under 30 have no clue what talent really is unless educated as such. Wow what a women

  • "THE LEGEND!"

  • sfsoma have you ever heard of Bob Mackie? He was on the design team and he dressed Cher so you know he was excited to have dressed Judy Garland the Legend!!!!!

  • @pusspleaser134 i agree.. it must have been an honor to create for "THE LEGEND"!!!!!!!

  • Lonestar1 Judy Garland's show ended in 1964 .So somethings were beginning to happen to her.In 1959 doctors told Judy she had 5 years to live. They told her she would never perform again to take it easy. She bounced back and played London and the Palace. Then in 1963 she got her own show but the president of C.B.S. did not like Judy and gave her a hard time which finally help end her show in 1964.I hoped that helped you know how she was doing as her life began to come to an end. This hurts.

  • @pusspleaser134 and after her show ended in 1964, Judy's voice was damaged in Hong Kong , and was never the same , but she still gave a song everything she had, and to me will always be the greatest

  • Damn, Judy killed it! Not that I would expect anything less...love her.

  • Heartbreakingly beautiful...

  • She looks absolutely stunning here! and as always sounds perfect.

  • Wow

  • @Tony7840 you're embarrassing yourself.

  • I wonder what this show rated the week it aired.. I bet when she appeared on TV ppl ran to their sets to watch the Legend in action. I wish I was old enough to have seen her "LIVE". I was born too late that is for sure.

  • my god!!!! bravo!

  • Ye gads folks look how youre still all arguing about her so many years after her passing. Just love her talent folks leave the rest alone.

  • Judy worked an audience & was a true showman. The reason she is still the Greatest; it's because she was Groomed by MGM & in Vaudville, More imprtant, she Was Blessed by God to be born with a Voice like no other. There are people who sing the same songs, sing in the same key reach the same High notes But It's Different when she sings. Judy Garland was true to every song she sang & lived it for us. She could sing to millions of people & still have you feel she is personally singing it each of us.

  • @NFitalianGuy Indeed Judy was unique, and everything you say. She also told a story in her singing, brought theatricality to her performances. She was physical on stage (and screen) in that she seemed to bring the stage/screen to life. Her iconic use of the microphone, its lead slung over her shoulder, gave her performance an edge like no other singer. Yes, it felt like she was singing just to you, not only the audience. Magic in motion.

  • Voice is still better than anyone else's. She gave more than anyone.

  • SHE IS AMAZING!!!!! how could the people who hurt her so bad even think about that! they used her so young :(

Poor Judy...She was and STILL is my favorite woman and i still love her to death ♥

  • Sullivan says at 4.40 - I don't blame her. what does he mean?

  • I think he actually says "I don't blame you" to tthe audience in response to their huge response to Judy's blockbusting performance

  • She's still miles ahead of everyone on the scene today.

  • Judy! Judy! Judy! Fat or thin it didn't matter. Terrific!

  • She's not fat here, she's healthy.

  • bravo!

  • Judy looks really healthy here. Maybe shoul dshoul dhave kept some extra weight on.When she was very thing she always looked alot older then her yrs. I know it was from the lack of sleep and long days and hard work along with the medications and alcohol. She had the gift and that star quality. The people who ran her career tried to change this wonderful woman in stead of letting just be herself. We probably would have had her still with us or for alteast another 30yrs more.

  • If only she could have hung on for a place like AA where it would not be a 'scandal' to admit a problem.

  • That was the same MIC Judy used through out her series. Back then that Microphone cost 3,000 dollars. She was also bloated from a bout with the Hepatitis. Still A great performance.

  • Even know Judy has gain weigth here, she still looks drop dead gorgeous. Screw MGM for stikking her on those pills.

  • pure talent. i never noticed before how similar her & lizas mannerisms are. or how beautiful judys skin was! a stunner, professionally and physically. heartbreaking story. out of interest...im 19, (i discovered judy about 2 or 3 years ago though)is there any younger judy fans? im just curious :) im the only one out of my friends unfortunately.

  • well im 14 and a really strong judy fan :D xx

  • That's great!Sorry for how patronising this is going to sound, but it's rare for people as young as you to like this music. Simply because they either havent heard it, or if they have, it's through parents so it's a kind of 'rebellion' not to like it. Or(in my sister's case, who's also 14 but has said she hates this kind of thing)they wouldn't admit to it because their friends would take the piss ;) lol. But well done for having a mind of your own!Sorry for rambling, I'm just quite surprised! :)

  • dont worry you dont sound patrinising! i love judy but i like theatre and things like that. her films just amaze me i love her voice! x

  • i'm 22 and i've loved her since i was maybe 5 or 6! word up!

  • I'm 23 and I'm with ya!!!! I'm getting her tattooed on my right side :0)

  • im´m a 29 german... i love her since i hear her singing over the rainbow.. mabye 20 years ago! she´s stunning and madem e cry and feel happy... the same time!.. sorry for my bad english.

i love judy! shes te best! so enormous.....

  • I was wrong........actually in Oct of 65 Judy would have been starting her THIRD season of her show

  • Just think - this was 1965........she could have been into her second season of "The Judy Garland Show"........I hope the assholes at CBS saw her here in Oct of '65 and said......"Boy, did we make a mistake........"

  • it's funny everyone says Judy's variety show "failed" but 45 years later we're still talking about, many people own it on DVD, including myself, it's still shown regularly on PBS and on and on :) when was the last time you heard someone watched BONANZA on DVD?

  • excellent comment my friend.. Judy's raw talent and artistry shines through all these grainy clips. It is interesting how she (even in her own lifetime) represents for many people a vulnerability that some cannot (it is frightening) for them to look at within themselves. She has become a convenient 'aunt sally' for some people to pick on. People in glass houses..etc comes to mind.

  • You are totaly right! The Judy Garland Show is the best thing available for those who were too young to see her live! the best show of ITS kind. best.

  • Judy was one of the most gifted entertainer -- but her series seldom showed her in her best light. Throughout the series she was nervous (on pills because she was convinced she had to be thin as a rail) and was frequently uncomfortable to observe. I'm glad the DVDs of the show exist, of course, but it is NOT Judy at her best, with all due respect. She should never have been subjected to the grind of a weekly show. She did it cause she needed the money -- period.

  • maybe if she did MONTHLY shows? I think she could have done it had CBS let her alone.

  • Agree completely. There are some great, classic moments from the series, but it is easy to see, looking at it even today, why 1963 audiences had some issues with her nerves and intensity. She was at her best in the special she did with Sinatra and Dino. Relaxed and plumpish. It was too much to ask of her to do a weekly "variety" hour--the idea was absurd. Judy Garland was not meant to visit you each week--she was a special event.

  • Absolutely waif55 . . . thank you . . . could not have said it better myself. Be well.

  • Judy didn't fail at the Variety Show gig - CBS failed her - they had no conception of the level of talent they were dealing with.

  • I agree--CBS tried to fit Judy into a format that didn't suit her talents--a weekly variety show was probably not the best for her--the regimen, long hours, etc.,. Iread somewhere that her husband Sid Luft felt there should have a special per month--something that would have suited her--also, the comedy sketches on the show were not right for her. The last few shows which were pure music were the best--(also kept costs down for remaining shows)

  • I agree

If anyone deserved the break that TV show could have given her it was Judy

Sinatra was famous for his tantrums and hard drinking but everyone just accepted it as part of his tough guy image

And besides - he was incredibly talented so they put up with it

No-one dropped these macho male stars from a record deal or TV show

Yet when Garland did it she was being "difficult" and a bitch etc.

No-one gave poor Judy a fair break her whole life and it's OUR loss as well as hers

  • on the other hand there are many wonderful moments within the shows. if only she had the strength within to tell CBS to f*ck itself and let her do the show her way.

  • She was an absolute genius.. the best there was!! There will never be another Judy.

  • Absolutely stunning! Who designed those costumes for her?

  • In my opinion, this number is one of her showstoppers of the sixties...This song, AND What Now My Love, showcased the power of her voice, even when in decline. Bravo!

  • Judy Never had cosmetic surgery. she was bloated due to a her hepatitis flaring back up.

  • She looks like she's had a face lift pulled really tight Does anyone know if she ever had cosmetic surgery? I can hardly recognise her

  • I remember Judy in concert in Sept 65 with that same white mic and it was great the way she whipped the cord around the stage going from one side to the other...Judy was not so thin and looked great in person & much younger than I expected...camera puts on 10lbs! Judy was magnificent and incomparable and Ed's comment at the end says it all and he knew. Bravo Judy, you are missed by many!

  • Also that Mic she uses might be the one from her CBS TV show. it cost 3,000 dollars back then. so I doubt they would throw it out.

  • Judy was heavy due to the fluid retentionfrom her liver condition not because she was off of any "speed". she suffered from Hepetitis back 1958. they told her she owuld never sing again and look what she accomplished after 1958. God BLESS THE WORLD'S GRETAEST ENTERTAINER!

  • You hit it on the head! Looking at pics from before she went into hospital for Hepetitis & you can see her being "heavier" was not natural fat/weight.She was sick. As the 60's went on, her final years she got smaller & smaller in the same way. Not natural looking, but sick. I've never been a fan who goes totally nuts over every little aspect in someones life.

  • (CONT.....)But when I saw the American Masters on her few weeks back. I caught myself crying, over her apperance in the said years. You could see it, it was screaming she needed help. The person below talked about "taking a break" from the speed. I hate when people say that because no one is to blame but good ol L.B Mayer & her mother, for her addiction. She was on them PRIOR to filming The Wizard of Oz,when she was 16!

  • (CONT 2...)

I know things were different back then, but that is still something that blows my mind!!I dont know about her lasting to the 80s as much as the world would have loved that, who wouldnt!? But she married that "winning" bag of s*** Mickey Deans.

  • (CONT 3....last one, I promise!;-P)

No one can blame someone who was so alone & just looking to be loved a small bit. It was just too bad it was Mickey Deans who was there! I honestly think she would have had a better chance of saving her life, if she did not marry him! But that is just my OP.

  • Your entitled to your opinion but I think Judy would unfortunately of been still addicted to the pills if Mickey Deans was there or not.

  • I saw her in the early 60's on her 2nd or 3rd "comeback" tour and blubbered through the whole thing. Have never seen, before or since, anyone who could take over a stage like she did. Sat on the apron and sang "Over the Rainbow" at the end. It is one damned fine memory of the last great belter. Hope she is resting peacefully. She needs it. What a joy she was to watch perform.

  • you notice she was a little heavier...taking a break from the speed...if only she took a break in 68 & 69...we might have had her during the 70's & maybe the 80's!

  • When she was well there was no one better.

  • Someone once said "when Judy Garland sang, God spoke." Is there a better way of putting it?

  • drugs, pills, booze, sex, overindulgence in everything. i did all that too, and i never sounded that damnnnnnnn good!!!!!!!!!!! god i love her.

  • Pure charisma, that's what Judy had. When Sullivan calls her one of the "all-time greats" at the end of the clip, he knows of what he speaks because he saw more talent than anyone in the history of showbiz.

  • Garland looking and sounding great in 1965 shows she never lost it...people did who didn't have appreciation of great talent. This is a magnificent & soulful performance that only Judy could achieve...Bravo Judy!

  • others who had failed variety shows included Frank Sinatra (from late 1950s), Sammy Davis Jr. and Jerry Lewis.

  • That mic she is using looks like the same one she used on her TV show. Wonder where it is now??? In someones collection perhaps?? Thanks for the clip - another incredible performance!!!!!!!!

  • Speaking of that microphone...if you watch the DVD collection of her series, in some episodes the camera moves in close enough for one to see "Judy" is written on the microphone. I love this song....

  • throw that mic cord over her sholder and she had he audience..............she had then all by that point

  • when she smiles in this clip, her face looks exactly like it did when she was a kid doing films with Mickey Rooney....

  • Wow!! That's the first time i've seen that and it blows me away!!

  • She sounded 10 times better than 1964 london palladium

  • Ed said it all...a stunning and riveting performance from Judy in late 65 at a time when many strangely some were saying that she didn't have it anymore but Judy could always deliver in a way that nobody could match and this is a prime example...a total emotional experience watching the greatest! Bravo Judy and we miss you...

  • This was Judy's lifelong battle. She was not naturally thin enough for films and television. She sounded better plump, but it was difficult to dress her, and you certainly couldn't have her dance at this weight, as she did on her '63-'64 show. So, it was difficult.

  • Good points, defundthewar. In fact, did any women who were primarily thought of as singers besides Dinah Shore and Judy ever have variety shows of their own?

  • Julie Andrews, Pearl Bailey, Helen Reddy, Leslie Uggams all had one-hour variety shows that failed to get good ratings and were canceled. There were probably more, but these come to my mind.

  • Thanks for this info. I remembered about Julie Andrews but not about the others. And there was Dolly Parton, too.

  • Yes, Dolly. Probably more if we did some research. Music-variety shows, for some reason, used to get torpedoed more easily than other shows. In fact, that category's been out of business for a while.

  • In 1965, she had gained a bit of weight back and looked and sounded better. She was in great vocal shape at this point. Great clip.

  • I lov it how she throws the mic at the end of the song

  • STUNING! she just takes you with her then blows you away, applause applause encore encore!!!!!! just wow wow WOW!!!!!

  • We saw her in Chicago at Arie Crowne Theater in May of this year.

  • Do you remember if she spoke about Liza at the concert in May 1965?

    Karen Gerbig

  • whats happend to the other version of this, the one where she wears purple i think and has a feather boa? cant remember who posted it

  • Just wonderful!
