@MrLovethelife There are no laws regarding public spendic cuts, thats is an issue of domestic policy. Wether we agree with it or not the cuts program is being persued by a government that was "democratically elected" by a majority of voters. I don't know the details of the travellers planning applications, if they are being unfairly discriminated against that should be investigated and they need to take action to defend their rights. But that is irrelevant to this situation.

One last post on this issue. Many of us are aware that there is concern among well informed people relating to the possibility of mass electrical failure due to circumstances beyond our control. If this occurs the sewage system will fail and we will all have to understand the art of digging a 'shit pit'. Most people prefer a deep narrow pit though some dig a small hole each time. Just make sure it's well covered. It is extremely unhygienic and illegal to leave it above ground.

I'm not in any way suggesting Dale Farm residents have inappropriate toilet facilities. It is a common complaint about travellers though I find house dwelling tourists are among the worst offenders. In case anyone needs educating on the excreta issue. Try following one of the little paths into the bushes at a traveller site. In some cases you will find a carefully dug hole and a spade in the pile of earth. A little earth is spread over the top of the excreta after each use. The problems are puppies or rats digging and livestock tripping and possibly breaking a leg. Planting a tree over the filled hole is a good move. I know of some very healthy trees.

One of the biggest differences I noticed in Scotland between now and 30 years ago is the amount of unburied excreta left by tourists. Sea kayakers are notorious for polluting remote islands. If they don't get their legal settlement they should travel somewhere else. Councils will have good reasons why they would deny settlement applications that are in no way discrimitary. according to the Housing Act1988 (as amended) if somebody has a caravan and nowhere to legally pitch it, then that is a definition of homelessness. If they then have a priority need as defined by the act, a local connection - which they do have, and if the homelessness is not intentional, then they have a right to be rehoused. Brilliant. Im not particularly in favour of telling people what to do, or build, on their land, but it is the law in this country and not enforcing it in this case out of "sympathy" would only set a precedant. Regulations cannot be bent or compromised, such behavior will render them usless.

@jonnypinknuckles I believe the laws are being bent when a council can choose a redicoulsy amount of cuts (in the millions) because they can't afford these services (Nurses, Midwives, fire station's open in the nigh, Libraries) but they can afford to spend 18m on evicting people from their homes without offering real alternatives. I find it strange how 95% of traavellers planing permission gets rejected! No wonder why they don't bother, the law discriminates against them almost every time!

@MrLovethelife There are no laws regarding public spendic cuts, thats is an issue of domestic policy. Wether we agree with it or not the cuts program is being persued by a government that was "democratically elected" by a majority of voters. I don't know the details of the travellers planning applications, if they are being unfairly discriminated against that should be investigated and they need to take action to defend their rights. But that is irrelevant to this situation.

@MrLovethelife Regardless of any perceived discrimination towards them, the fact is they have broken the law and Basildon council are obligated to respond. I'm not saying I agree with the governments policies or positions, i'm just stating the fact that, regulations, codes of conduct, if unenforced, become usless.
If the community beleived that the council were unjust in refusing their requests they should have appealed that desicion at the time, before they invested substantial capital in...

@jonnypinknuckles It's not a matter of breaking pre-established law,it is up to Basildon Council's discretion to allow or refuse planning permission,which needs to be done on reasonable grounds.Calling a used-car dump"greenbelt"when it is convenient on the one hand, and building extensively on real greenbelt on the other hand gives it zero moral authority.
Like the Lawrence family before them,the Travellers have been through all the legal procedures, but these are 90% biased against them.

@NicosNicosNicosNicos Hey i'm in the same boat as you, people should be able to do what they want on their land (as long as it doesn't impair local residents standard of living), just pointing out that the decision to evict the travellers is logical and in line with the bureacracy's system of planning regulation. However it is apparent, especially given the current administration's decision to surrender tracts of greenbelt land for commercial building projects that this system is broken.

One last post on this issue. Many of us are aware that there is concern among well informed people relating to the possibility of mass electrical failure due to circumstances beyond our control. If this occurs the sewage system will fail and we will all have to understand the art of digging a 'shit pit'. Most people prefer a deep narrow pit though some dig a small hole each time. Just make sure it's well covered. It is extremely unhygienic and illegal to leave it above ground.

Sorry to be so graphic, chaps, but someone has to air this subject. It isn't prejudice to hold someone personally accountable for a failure to dispose of their excreta in a healthy way. It is prejudice to call travellers dirty. If we deal with the issues we can separate the prejudice from the genuine concerns. Some people without a W.C. chemical or compost toilet display a digging implement prominently to illustrate their responsible attitude.

I'm not in any way suggesting Dale Farm residents have inappropriate toilet facilities. It is a common complaint about travellers though I find house dwelling tourists are among the worst offenders. I once went to the site of Stow Fair to visit a friend the day after it finished and met a young lady with a clipboard accompanied by two men dressed from head to foot in protective gear. It's a dirty job but someone has to do it.
I suggest hygiene transgressions are documented on youtube.

In case anyone needs educating on the excreta issue. Try following one of the little paths into the bushes at a traveller site. In some cases you will find a carefully dug hole and a spade in the pile of earth. A little earth is spread over the top of the excreta after each use. The problems are puppies or rats digging and livestock tripping and possibly breaking a leg. Planting a tree over the filled hole is a good move. I know of some very healthy trees.

@MrGilles1990 Many of us have experienced intimidation, threats of violence and actual violence from travellers. A friend of mine was only saved by emergency surgery on one occasion. Police and other apologists often say "It's just the travellers way". I support the right to use lethal force, when appropriate, in order to effectively deal with this issue. Pussyfooting around only makes the situation worse. The disproportionate support given to minorities will rebound on those minorities.

One of the biggest differences I noticed in Scotland between now and 30 years ago is the amount of unburied excreta left by tourists. Sea kayakers are notorious for polluting remote islands. Use a W.C., compost toilet, 'shit pit' or plastic bag. I recommend posting videos of this problem on youtube. If you seek publicity expect muckraking. People who poo on the ground shouldn't cry discrimination.

The misunderstanding that is preventing this issue from being neatly resolved is the idea that living in a nomadic dwelling is a cultural choice. I argue from my own experience that it is a cultural necessity. For some people, myself included, living in a nomadic dwelling is essential for good health. After being evicted from our own land I was forced to move into a house and my health has suffered since then.
Many people simply cannot accept that this is fact.

There are an extraordinary number of hateful comments appearing under these videos. Fake comments are commonly posted on many parts of the internet when 'dark forces' wish to influence public opinion. It's difficult to tell which are genuine.
Last time an Irish traveller talked to me it was an attempt to defraud me. They had been around the area selling fake and substandard products. Criminals must answer individually for their actions. Group punishment is wrong.
